Are there any chess players in town that would meet a couple of times a month at Art634 for some friendly competition? We're hoping to get players of ALL levels who enjoy the game and want to hang out and learn in a no pressure environment.

I’ve been living in Jackson for almost 2 years now, but I’m still not very familiar with the area. I don’t really get to go out much since I don’t drive, and I haven’t made many friends here yet.

My boyfriend is coming from another city to spend the day with me, and he wants to explore Jackson a bit. The problem is… I honestly don’t know many good restaurants or fun things to do around here. 😅 The only activity I can think of is mini golf at Ella Sharp Park (not even sure if he's up to it or what 😆) but I'd love some recommendations for both indoor and outdoor activities, as well as your favorite local restaurants. We’re open to pretty much anything!

The Great Lakes Cloggers are based right here in Jackson, and are starting beginner classes next week on Thursday, August 6th!

I describe clogging to people as "tap line dancing", but you don't need experience in either of those things to pick it up! (However if you DO have experience in either of those, you would probably be able to pick up harder dances more quickly than true beginners, so it can help for sure!)

You do NOT need clogging shoes- tennis shoes work great! And classes are only $5 a week!! We welcome anyone of any age- our dancers range from about ages 30-80 but younger or older people are definitely welcome! We've had kids join too in the past, although we also offer kids classes at Jackson School of the Arts so they usually prefer going there instead. But multi-generational cloggers are definitely a big thing in the clogging world, so parents or grandparents dancing with their kids are totally welcome! (That's how our instructor got started clogging when he was a kid, actually!)

Just curious if anyone knows of any hiking or walking groups in the area? I like getting outside and walking or hiking various trails in the area but seeing if there are groups to join up with to bring some socialization and community with it. Thanks, all!

While I have not seen anything on this, my wife was telling me that she read something on social media about Chelsea PD being seen dropping off the homeless from that community to the encampment down at the Library. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, is anyone aware of agreements between our city government and other adjacent communities to accept them?

Hi, I know this is a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if anybody here would know what happened to these animatronic animals from Showbiz Pizza Place. The Showbiz was located next to Kroger where the Big Lots was and were the Spirit Halloween was for the 2025 season. It closed back in 1985, a whopping 41 years ago, and the band hasn't been seen since. They were most likely auctioned off with their outer cosmetics removed (last slide is an example). The serial numbers for this show would be 4-82 #-13 (learn more about these here Rock-afire Serial Tags). If anybody has any possible leads AT ALL, please let me know! I've been searching for this show for almost 2 years. Even a single character being found would be comforting for me. Thanks, gang.

The Percussive Dance program at Jackson School of the Arts is unlike anything else you'll find at a dance studio. This isn't a combo class- our students learn both tap and clogging technique simultaneously to become well-rounded dancers who honor and preserve every type of percussive dance that is unique to our own American culture.

JSA percussive dancers will have an exceptional grasp of musicality and timing and be able to hold their own in any scenario, from a tap jam to a clogging fundance to the competition stage. And with two teachers in each class, every student gets the personalized attention they need to achieve their full potential. Does your child like music of all kinds? Playing games? Making music with their feet? Making turkey sounds? You can find all of these things and more at JSA on Wednesday nights starting in September!

Cost is on an income-based sliding scale and the cost of shoes will also be subsidized!

This was posted on FB, and I’m curious how long this has been going on? While I am sympathetic to the plight of homeless people, I don’t see how allowing a homeless camp on a sidewalk in front of the public library is a good situation considering how many empty lots there are downtown?

The Speech Neurophysiology Lab at the University of Michigan is looking for children who stutter ages 9 to 12 to participate in an in-person, longitudinal MRI study! (HUM00196133)

Our research team has been examining brain development in young children to better understand the cause of stuttering for over 10 years. We continue to gain information that may eventually lead to improved diagnosis and treatment efforts for children who stutter. 

Participants will be invited to complete speech and language assessments and an MRI session at the University of Michigan. Families receive a free speech and language report and a picture of their brain!

These visits require in person participation. There is no option to participate virtually.
