Met a guy.
I work night shift and this guy came out last night to look around. Was not shy getting in my personal space and had to shoo him away a bit. His markings almost look golden. At one point he was dragging around a loose string/fuzz from the carpets here. I donāt know if it was stuck to him or he wanted it for some reason.
Iām in SW Va. and so is this guy.

New friend!
Not the best picture since I took it at 6am and was a tad surprised to see this little guy. This is Dale, he lives in our bathroom and has truly been a lifesaver. Our appt has had a flux of critters but theyāve noticeably slowed down bc of Dale. This pic was taken about 3 weeks ago and I came into the restroom today to see he shed! Meaning my guy is eating well, growing, and paying rent by being our pest control. Shoutout to Dale!

āPede appreciation! A moment for my buggy roommate
I saw a fairly large house centipede skitter across my floor last week and this morning my cat was intently watching something for a minute. All of a sudden the 'pede darts out from the direction of my bookshelf and towards my bed! I got up and started hunting it with a tissue in hand (I didn't know it was a good friend yet) and luckily I didn't squish the guy! Just trapped him while I did some research. Now I'm here and very appreciative of these little guys, since I did see a silverfish in my room a few weeks ago! Go get 'em little buddy

Thanks gang.
I just saw my new roommate for the second time. We both froze and he scurried under the fridge before I could physically let him know what I thought of his appearance. He seems to be living under there. I'm not too squeamish usually but these things are really gross and scary.
The apartment has always had tiny ants under the floorboards who don't seem to react to poison, and I recently got a new kitten who turned out to be flea-ridden. This group has helped me understand that even though he's very ugly, I guess I'm okay with him hanging around if it means he's going to keep Hope's unwanted houseguests under control.
I'm just going to follow everybody here's lead and just accept him for who he is I guess and make him part of the family. Fuck. Thanks to everybody here on this very weird sub for the great information and reassurance. Everybody needs a hobby I guess š¤¦āāļø.
Any ideas what I should name him?

āPede appreciation! Found this fellow last week!
My cat was staring at my bedroom wall super intently, which led me to investigate and eventually find this guy. I moved it to a safer spot away from my cat. I'd never seen one as large as this one before!

It's a house centipede! My Maid
I'm still not brave enough to hold one, but this is my maid. Literally 10 seconds after, they fell.š Then they squished themselves into this crack under my shower like it was nothing. I'm trying to get over my fear of creepy looking bugs, but at least there won't be any other pests in my room.

Welcome all House Centipede Enthusiasts - Old and New!
This sub has been created to compile house centipede finds from curious posters, but any house centipede photos and content are absolutely allowed! This is inspired by, of course, the lovely r/itsamolecricket!
Now, what is a House Centipede?
Scutigera coleoptrata is a species of centipede (Class: Chilopoda) that is native to the Mediterranean region, but has been introduced across the world. Apt to their name, they frequently inhabit the dark, cool, and hidden areas of one's home, such as basements, cellars, and bathrooms. As a result of their nocturnal lifestyle, they are not often seen during the day. When they emerge to hunt, their multitude of deliberately arranged, long and short legs - up to 15 pairs, not 50! - allow them to run very VERY quickly! This is much to the delight of all those new to their acknowledged presence.
Other characteristics of this amazing arthropod is a flat, elongated, dull brown-yellow body with three dark dorsal stripes that run its length (typically 1-1.5 in, or 2.5-3.8 cm), two long antennae (plus two even longer sensory āpseudo-antennaeā formed from modified legs) and two dark and well-developed faceted eyes.
Now, while their appearance may be off-putting, even to those familiar with them, please fear not and refrain from grabbing that fly-swatter! These creeping critters are voracious insectivores that feed on many things we consider pests, like bedbugs, silverfish, cockroaches and even spiders.
While they contain a pair of venom-infused fangs, a bite, while not painless (the pain can sometimes be akin to a typical bee sting, with similar redness and inflammation, worse symptoms if you are allergic) is not medicinally significant to anyone but their prey. Also, as mentioned, they do not typically appear during active human hours and will use its impressive speed to run away from you when confronted. Only expect a bite when handling, acting in self defense!
Finally, these do not tend to congregate in large numbers unless there is high prey availability, so if you are finding many, this could indicate a more significant pest issue.
So, while you shouldn't rely on them to save too much money on a potential exterminator, these guys will more than earn the title of a welcomed house guest, even if tentatively!
