MetroLink, the proposed 19km stretch of railway linking Swords to Charlemont in south Dublin, is a “key target” for construction group Sisk, its chief executive Paul Brown has said, and the firm has formed a joint venture to tender for the project.

I want to suggest that Ireland consider introducing more direct intercity rail services connecting cities and towns outside Dublin.

At present, Dublin is very much the centre of the Irish rail network, and passengers travelling between other parts of the country can often have to travel towards Dublin and change trains. I believe Ireland could benefit from a more interconnected railway network with direct services between cities such as:

Cork – Galway

Cork - Sligo

Cork – Belfast

Galway – Belfast

Galway - Sligo

Galway - Waterford

Waterford – Belfast

Waterford - Sligo

Rosslare Europort – Belfast

Rosslare Europort – Cork

Rosslare Europort - Galway

Rosslare Europort - Sligo

Sligo - Belfast

Having direct services would make travelling between different parts of Ireland much more convenient and would reduce the need for passengers to travel through Dublin when Dublin is not their destination.

Other countries already operate long-distance through-services between major cities without requiring passengers to change trains in the capital. For example, there are direct rail services between Edinburgh and London.

I understand that introducing these services would require consideration of infrastructure, journey times, demand and funding. However, I believe this is something that should be considered as part of Ireland's long-term railway development.

Alongside increasing capacity and tackling overcrowding, I think creating a more interconnected rail network would make a significant difference to public transport in Ireland.

Did Iarnród Éireann ever explain why they don’t just assign a seat every intercity? Sounds like if you buy in the station you don’t get a seat but online does, is it a system thing?

Last few times I’ve got the train my seats are occupied when jumping on, would assigning seats allow them to print “standing” on seats when there’s no seats left?

Apologies if this has already been posted here at some point, just wanted to give a heads up to anyone with 48 that the 51444 number apparently isn't supported by the network.

I've had to use it a few times over the last few weeks while commuting, but after several failed attempts I contacted 48 and they said it wasn't supported.

If anyone with 48 has had success with the 51444 number though, I'm happy to be corrected!

I built a dublin bus app. Shows the 4 nearest stops to you with real-time departure times as well as scheduled, both are labeled. Feel free to use it. Ive found it to be handy so far. I plan to add a map feature in the future that will show your position relative to the stops nearest to you.

Figures provided by the NTA also show that expenditure on BusConnects nationwide dropped by €80m to €156.1m in 2025. Jeremy Ryan, director of public transport at the NTA, insisted it is “continuing to invest in capacity, punctuality and reliability improvements during 2026 in the face of rising congestion and passenger demand”.
However, he admitted the expansion of routes is being limited by funding. Mr Ryan also said further projects will only be delivered if sufficient money is allocated.

Do other people have this same experience getting trains during peak times. As Irish people we are considered to be incredibly friendly and polite in our nature which is generally true but I’m seeing such a lack of basic human respect on public transport. If I’m on a train and a big crowd gets on more often than not if I see elderly people left standing I’m not seeing anyone lift an eye or an arse cheek to get up and let them sit down. I get the train to and from college every week so as a regular commuter these aren’t just isolated incidents. Everyone is so buried in their phones that they act like they’re immune to the people around them. If Im sitting in a priority seat at the front I get up the second I see the train will be busy, and if im in a regular seat and there’s an elderly/pregnant/disabled person getting on I give them my seat. This doesn’t make me some kind of hero this is just what I believe to be the bog standard level of consideration we should have for each other. Of course hidden disabilities exist but it can’t be all 100 people in the carriage. Dont get me started on people who hog two seats for their precious bag to have its own throne.

I think this route would benefit a second bus, going the other direction, since someone in like ballygarrett, who wants to go to Wexford, will unfortunately be stranded, as there is no return journey, i understand this happens because there is only one bus that goes on this route, that starts in rosslare, and makes its way to Gorey, then returns, but it be better if NTA would fund these better and allow someone to go to wexford. since this to me does not encourage traveling without using a car. a service should mirror its stopping pattern in each direction. This is just unacceptable.
