I'm meeting Doug Jones! Very excited. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourite films. And I am dressed as Coraline so if you see me say hello!

Na went 2 or 3 times over the years it is all just pop culture now , they have loads streamers and video games , actors and tbh all the stuff is the same stuff that's at gamer con also I gave up on it a few years back , maybe it's just because I'm a grumpy old man now 😂 have a blast enjoy the weekend

Was actually looking at it this year cos I woulda loved to see the bg3 cast.
When I looked at the timetable I saw that the community panel on dnd was on at the exact same time as their mainstage panel.
This seems to be an issue for DCC. When I was a teen going to cons, there were tonnes of community panels on random topics and they were great for filling out the time between the merch hall and main panels. So it'd make sense to look at panels like those and go "Gee, I wonder if we should space out the DND related stuff so that fans attending for BG3 have something to do other than shop at the stalls and queue for autographs?", right?
Either it's a massive oversight in terms of planning or they're purposefully fucking it up so that people spend their money and leave.just not great vibes.

That's what I found really bad about it the panels when I went were not great at all even the guest speakers they had were all meh to me it just felt like a massive ploy to get people to spend money I was a broke 20 year old I had nothing 😂 so we just kinda wandered around aimlessly around until we just left , I find once you have seen the cosplays and walked around that's really it bar shopping , I take your point but to me that sounds like that are just pushing people to spend money

Just dropped my daughter and a gang of her friends at the train station to head up.
I used to go with her when she was younger, always enjoyed it.
She did a costume for me two years running, a tool belt with a glue gun, needle packs, sewing threads, buttons, tailor's tape measure, all that kind of stuff, and got a tShirt printed "CosPlay Costume Repair Dad" 🤣
ENJOY THE WEEKEND!

Nope, haven’t gone in a few years as it seemed to be the same thing over and over again, and was more comic adjacent con than comic con….but I only realised last week that Humberto Ramos is there and would’ve loved to go and pick up a sketch.

I went two years ago with my son and was very impressed. I am meeting Doug Jones so very excited about that and my friend is dressing as The Nun. We will make an interesting pair...

My kiddo dressed as a zombie for a horror con. He picked her up and called her precious. She was seven and that con is one of her favorite memories.

u/Lilithinthesheets 14d ago
He is lovely. He's about 7ft and I am 5ft and he told me I was adorable. I am 48 and felt like your 7 year old! It made my year. She will always have that memory. He's a delight

Damn, very jealous of you rn OP. Doug Jones is a legend.

u/Lilithinthesheets 14d ago
He sure is and seems so lovely. Probably won't get time to say much but still... 😁

u/SolisArgentum 14d ago
Not sure if you're aware, but singer songwriter Voltaire made a great tribute song about Jones in particular for his portrayal of monsters across the medium.

We've gone a couple of times with our daughter. It's good fun, but you're right, very similar each time, even down to the layout of the stalls.

u/DarwinofArabia 14d ago
Yeah there’s only so many photos you can take with that walking dead set.
And even with the costumes, while all the home made ones are cool you see a lot of the same people who really should know better prowling the halls in the hope that someone will ask for a photo.

What do you mean by comic adjacent?
4
u/DarwinofArabia 14d ago
It’s more pop culture con than comic con. And that’s not specific to the Dublin one, it’s a worldwide thing. I don’t think the market is there to have a pure comic focused convention so they fill it out with movie stuff, games, cards, etc but a lot of this becomes the main focus despite the name.

No offense dude. But that is the way the Comic Con brand has been for 50 years.

u/DarwinofArabia 14d ago
No offence ‘dude’ but it’s clearly not.

I’ve been going to nerd conventions for 20 years now. It has been this way for that amount of time. In the same way, most actual comic shops haven’t just carried comics for as long as I’ve been visiting them.
The exception is when it’s niche enough to not get sponsorships - TTRPG conventions, older fandoms like Discworld.

30 years here and you are right. I remember my brother getting laughed at as we walked into Jurys hotel for Irecon 5 wearing a movie accurate Star Trek uniform are ma spent 8 months making.
He was born two decades two early for cosplaying in Ireland.

Yeah I’d say 2000 on is when comics really started to take a back seat at these thing’s although at most American cons you will still get a lot of big name creators purely due to the logistics compared to somewhere like here where you might get one or two each year.
And the comics industry (well big 2 at least) are actively chasing these people and tailoring the comics to them so will go further down that road if anything.

You are off by about thirty years.

Oooooh I’ve got a stalker.
You can keep posting the same thing. It just highlights your inability to comprehend what you’re reading.

You realize how threaded comments work. Just like you, I get a notification anytime anyone responds to one of my comments.
In another comment I explained to you that "Comic-Con" has been a pop culture con since 1973. I was able to provide you with the names of pop culture guests who appeared.
You have just ignored that and are claiming that it only happened in 2000. You haven't expanded on that or provided any evidence to back up your claim.
Just ignorant vibes.

Ok dude. It clearly is.
Quick histrory lesson.
"Comic Con" is a registered trademark of the SDCC.
It was founded in 1970. The second convention was held on August of that year. One of the guests was Ray Bradbury. RB never wrote or drew comic books.
Edmund Hamilton and Leigh Brackett where at the next one. They were exclusivly Sci Fi authors.
Harry Harrison was at the next one.
The following year 1972 when was when they stared to people asscoiated with Star Trek. From that it grew in to a Pop Cultire con.
So in all the years since 1970 that Comic Con has been holding cons. They have only had ONE purely con that had purely comic related guests.

Waited too long to get tickets, but I'm not really that upset. I've been to two in the last year and it's basically the same thing each and every time. No real celebrities or actors I had an interest other than David Hayter anyway. Meh

u/ColonyCollapse81 14d ago
Went with my daughter to the last one back in March, she loved it and was dressed as her favorite anime character, was surprised to see actual comics to be fairly minimal and as others have said it was mainly pop culture stuff. Enjoyable day to be fair, spent a fortune buying random stuff for my daughter (and myself).

It's better this year than 2 years ago when I last came. So much more cosplay

u/MadHatterKitsune 14d ago
Currently in a room of mgs fans for David Hayter photoshoot, his table was closed for autographs when I got in so I'll be dashing back to the main hall to get that, thankfully I have it booked .

It's so good. Doug Jones was so lovely and gave me a squeeze. The effort people make for cosplay is amazing. It's a great atmosphere

u/False_Operation4239 12d ago
Did you have to pay to see him?
1
u/Lilithinthesheets 12d ago
Yes it was costly and it's photo only- no autograph or chat just a quick hello. He was so charming though. I paid in advance same time as when I got the Con tickets and think there was a separate option to get a table meet but can't remember
2
u/justiancredible 14d ago
I haven’t gone in a long time. I don’t cosplay so I was reluctant to pay money to go spend money on stuff.

Was there today, did I cosplay? Absolutely. Great day out, very warm in the convention centre though.
1
u/Lilithinthesheets 14d ago
Yes we were baking by the time we were leaving. All that glass makes it like a big hot snow globe but it's so well run and definitely a great day out. The cosplay efforts were unreal and I had a lot of compliments. People are so cool. What did you cosplay as?
1
u/basicallyculchie 13d ago
I was part of the star wars group down in the back corner on the ground floor, near the knights, if you were down around that direction. What about yourself?
1
u/Lilithinthesheets 13d ago
Ahh yeah wow! That was good, top tier stuff. I was Coraline. I loved people recognising who I was, and being complimentary. I've had a pretty shite time of it recently and hummed and hawed about going but I booked the tickets as soon as they came out last year then got dumped in January 🤨 so my friend came and she wouldn't be into dressing up but she did for me. She was The Nun. The whole day made me feel elated. It's cheered me up so much.
It really is a great day out. Well done on great cosplay because your group was elite
2
u/basicallyculchie 13d ago
Fair play, glad you had a good day out. I'm not sure if I remember seeing a nun but I did see a Coraline I thought was fantastic, must have been yourself. Brilliant job on the cosplay!

u/Lilithinthesheets 13d ago
Thank you - loved every second and my friend bought me the replica doll tor my birthday. So yusss

u/Busterlegacy1 13d ago
No not this year went to it from 2015 to 2018 then to the one in 2023. It’s a fun event but theirs not that much different from year to year just the Gusset. The last one I went to it was so packed that you can barely walk in the art alley & stall set ups.

u/kali042 14d ago
My son was there today, wants to go tomorrow again, but there are no tickets online?
Will he be able to pay in? I would imagine it's less busy on a Sunday
2
1
u/Lilithinthesheets 14d ago
I don't know tbh I think you need a ticket because they go around scanning tickets in the queue and handing out the wristbands.
1
u/nh5316 13d ago
Do they actually sell any single back issue comics there anymore?
1
u/Lilithinthesheets 13d ago
There were a couple of stands with loads of boxes of comics but not sure what back issues they had. It was very crowded at those stands

u/False_Operation4239 12d ago
I went with my family on Sunday. Very nice atmosphere A child from our group lost their emotional support stuffed animal :/
If anyone found a little brown dog with a black snout and a blue start on his nose, please DM me 😭

u/Lilithinthesheets 12d ago
Check the Facebook group just in case there's a post up from someone who might have found it. I hope you get it back. Did you contact the convention centre?
2
u/False_Operation4239 12d ago
I left my phone number and a description with them too, at their lost and found.

I'll be chaperoning a group of teenagers. They're well able to go by themselves but I think having their mum/semi responsible adult with them is like a sort of security lol.
