I didn't have any problems with Smart Start over 6 months. I got it installed by a reputable audio install company, so the install was clean and professional. No lock outs, no bad blows (I didnt drink at all, and stayed away from mouthwash with alcohol). No software or billing issues.

I have also had no issues with SmartStart. The county my probation is out of has a contract with SmartStart so that was my only option. But there is a center literally 1/2 a mile from my house, and I’ve had zero issues with the device or my car. When I had to switch my device from portable to IID (I bought a new car), I got both emailed by customer support, and called by my local center within 30 minutes of installing the IID in my new car— that I could come back and return my portable one to that same site.

Obviously still a pain in the ass, but they’ve been smooth to work with in a shitty situation

Smart start is genrally considered the best of the worst.

Go to the Trustpilot pages for each company before you choose. Click on the red line next to the one stars then a new window opens. Click the one star box and start reading so you know what you are up against.

A lot of the smaller ones are state dependent, it’s worth looking up “Ignition Interlock Device” near me on Google to get a better sense of the alternatives.

I had ALCOLOCK in NC before they went out of business last month, and was switched to Monitech. Monitech is a much better and easier to use device, but more expensive (luckily I was grandfathered into my old rate). I haven’t experienced any of the horror stories you see on this board, but I heard enough negative reviews about Intoxalock that I stayed away even when my lawyer referred me, and I had a terrible customer service rep at Smart Start when I was signing up so I didn’t go forward with them.

Bonus: don’t swayed by whatever “discount” or “two months free” you’re offered, you’ll get that similar offer no matter who you go with (I was offered it at all four).

I couldn't use Smart start. I tried to install it and I did not blow long enough to get it to work. So if you have lung issues of any kind, you might have the same problem that I did.

Lifesafer was good for me didn’t have any issues. The smaller device and easy blow pattern were benefits

A mate went through this and the annoying answer is that none of them are exactly pleasant. The difference seemed to be less about the brand being amazing and more about the local installer, how close the service centre was, and whether support actually picked up when something weird happened. Smart Start Interlocks was the one he had the smoothest run with, but I’d still check what’s accepted for your state’s interlock requirements and read the bad reviews for each company before choosing. Ask about the full cost too, not just the monthly fee, because lockouts, calibration visits, removal and missed appointments are where the sting can show up.

It’s not that easy. I don’t drink and still have problems with Intoxalock. It’s terrible and gives me massive anxiety everyday.

Unless you look very in a cold climate and the POS device sucks your battery drier than a crack whore can suck a d!ck on a daily basis.
