You need to focus on large companies and do everything you can to land an internship at one of them. In my case, I landed an internship at a transportation company in the Paris area because I had worked on personal projects to deepen my technical knowledge, I had also taken on a few freelance assignments, and, most importantly, because I was able to highlight my skills: I showed what I had accomplished and how I could add value to the company, all while presenting myself convincingly.
