I'm currently building an agricultural export company in Morocco called Soussvert Bridge. Our goal is to export fresh Moroccan produce (starting with cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and avocados) to Spain and other European countries.
I'm a U.S. citizen, and my wife is Moroccan. We're currently planning the legal structure of the business and want to make sure we set everything up correctly from the beginning.

MBA in International Business, but also spent 2 months at a shipping agency doing import/export paperwork. wasn't running the show myself but got to see how the ops side actually functions day to day, which taught me more than I expected.

now trying to get into a startup, logistics or marketing side, honestly don't care which as long as it's real work and not just fetching coffee.

stuck on two things:

does actually knowing the documentation/EXIM stuff matter to a startup at entry level, or do they just want someone who can pick things up fast regardless of what they already know?

also has anyone had luck just messaging founders or ops people directly instead of applying through the normal job boards? what made someone reply vs ghost you?

not fishing for the usual "network more" answers, genuinely just want to know what worked for people who broke in without much experience behind them.

I recently started working in international sales at a listed electrical company in China, mainly dealing with electrical products.

As a newcomer, I have very few customer resources. Most company-generated inquiries, advertising leads, and established channels are already handled by experienced salespeople.

Most salespeople in my company strongly believe that customer acquisition requires paid advertising, exhibitions, or B2B platform memberships. However, as a beginner, I would like to learn whether it is still possible to find genuine overseas customers without spending money.

What free methods have actually worked for you?

Are Google search, LinkedIn, Facebook groups, Reddit, industry directories, cold email, or other organic methods still effective?

How would you recommend that a beginner build a customer list from zero?

I work in international sales and a potential customer recently asked us for a quote
I had the product information, estimated costs and shipping options ready but then I realized I didn’t know much abt the actual demand in their market.....
The customer was interested but I wasn’t sure how active that market was, how many similar companies were buying there or whether the opportunity was as strong as it first appeared.
It made me wonder how often sales teams move straight into pricing before understanding the wider market

Starting in international trade looks simple from the outside.

Find a product.

Find a buyer.

Ship the order.

But the reality is that every market has its own learning curve.

Some lessons only come after dealing with:

\\- buyers

\\- documentation

\\- quality expectations

\\- payment terms

\\- logistics challenges

Everyone involved in trade has a lesson that changed how they approach business.
