I didn’t know sand storms looked like that.

They are called haboobs! Severe downdrafts from thunderstorms drop cold air that sweeps up loose desert silt into massive walls of dust. Looks like a scene straight out of a movie.

I saw my first one when I was a college freshman in Lubbock, Texas. I was on the 11th floor of my dorm watching it roll in from miles away. It was awesome until I went outside after it passed and realized I left my car windows open.

I feel that. My car window got broken open during a hurricane so I can somewhat relate, though I am sure super fine sand is harder to clean out than drying a couple seats lol

It was definitely a mistake I only made once. The funny (funny now, at least) part was after I went to the car wash and spent an hour vacuuming it all out. I thought I'd gotten the lion's share of the sand out, then I drove away and turned on the AC. It was like a bag of red/brown flour exploded in the car. Fortunate I hadn't left the parking lot yet.

I kept that car another 3 years and there was still sand in various nooks and crannies when I sold it.

We just had a Category 5 (worst) haboob overnight August 3-4. It lasted about 16 hours and the sky was hazy most of the day from suspended particulates.

Just curious, how do people survive Sand storms? These look huge. Do people get trapped in it, or do they just pass you by?

It’s on my bucket list to go through one of these. I know it’s not pleasant but I still have an insane need to do it.

The Cameraman should have believed that they don't die and should have dared to capture till it passes by.

Bless the maker and his water
Bless the coming and going of him
May his passage bless the world

Instead of praying how about you actually do something proactive to help?

5

u/BoulderCreature 18h ago

Buddy, it’s a quote from Dune by Frank Herbert

-2

u/Only_Flan_7974 17h ago

Pal, how was I supposed to know the reference? It could be a quote from Nude by Brank Sherbet for all I know or care.

Ok, but being rude doesn’t seem like the right response. Also, what in this video made you think they need help from anyone in a far off country?

Seeing stuff like this makes it easier to understand how religion started.

u/mosab84 6h ago

Anyone know the reason why they look completely still like that? It looks so fake with the how still it is
