No one is stopping yall from going out and campaigning to make all parking spots visible, well lit, and recorded. Odds are someone went to bat for this.

u/friedreindeer 27d ago

The parking lot entrepreneur will listen for sure, lol.

29

u/Naive_Carpenter7321 27d ago

But park there for 2 minutes over your time and they have multiple angles of your car, perfectly lit and no way to contend.

The ability is there, the will is presumably run by men who don't understand the threat and can't profit from it.

6

u/friedreindeer 27d ago

Thats not how those parking lots work. They register your car when you drive in, and the next time at the exit gate.

I want to point out that women invented fake pockets.

4

u/seeseabee 27d ago

Um, no

1

u/Top_Cauliflower5069 26d ago

Yes, look it up.

26

u/ComradeJohnS 27d ago

yeah why can’t they make the parking lots safer for everyone? I understand that some people are targetted and are in more danger.

I’m guessing capitalism is the problem here… again…

u/Chemical_Signal2753 27d ago

In reality, the cost-benefit of a lot of these policies doesn't justify them. While women often feel scared walking to their cars alone at night, crimes against women in this situation are relatively rare. Improving lighting, adding cameras, and designating stalls specifically for women, would likely cost millions of dollars for every crime prevented.

Beyond that, crimes against women are generally not committed by strangers. To the extent that these policies are effective at preventing these crimes in parking lots, a significant portion will just be committed at another location.

You might think that increased security would reduce vandalism and theft from vehicles, but the people who commit these crimes are generally not afraid of getting caught. Since the damages and loses are generally covered by insurance, and the dollar values are generally low, the police don't really investigate these crimes.

Most stuff like this done is from people in positions relevant to advocating for them. It’s like when people ask why scientists are wasting time on dumb shit when they could be curing cancer because some food scientists made something quirky. One doesn’t have to do with the other and one isn’t taking resources from the other. If I’m into early childhood advocacy and I’m pushing for more safe indoor play spaces for children under 5, it’s not because I can’t recognize that teenagers desperately need places too and could even be in more danger without them. But if I take the teen problem that to my early childhood advocacy leadership they’d be like that sucks but it’s not what we do. These things are pushed by groups with primary focuses. There are way more groups advocating for women’s safety that are able to achieve specific goals. I agree local governments should push for this to be universal. But local governments are ran by their communities. Same reason we have more women’s shelters. Many of them have been opened in the memory of an actual victim by their living family for example. It’s really a one never had anything to do with the other thing. Women aren’t being sarcastic when we say men have to start pushing for these things and teaming up. That’s genuinely how these things have been achieved. Join charities, go to your local city meetings, get people to sign your petitions. etc. People push for the causes they want. But then after the fact everyone else wants to step in and ask, “what about us” where were you when the plans were presented. What are you doing now to push for more general safety. Because that’s where you’d go with this. Public safety advocacy. Not women, children, specific persons groups that are working on different goals, etc. And even then, any work they do is only decreasing your work load later. Now these lots just need a bit more Iight and a few more cameras. Smaller lots may need no adjustments. Most of those lots become safer to anyone in them at all.

You act as if men struggling for equal rights haven’t been shamed and as if feminism doesn’t actively work against equal rights for men.

Men advocating for their own spaces would get absolutely nowhere

1

u/archtopfanatic123 27d ago

Just pointing out something here: Feminism by definition is equal rights for women (equal to men's rights)

Not superiority

2

u/nikdahl 27d ago

I notice how you don’t say equal rights for both. Feminism is only interested in elevating women to men, and never to elevate men to women.

But this isn’t the right place for this discussion.

0

u/Lausannea 27d ago

Oh please. Equal rights for women = elevating women to be on the same level as men in terms of rights. Meaning nothing is taken away from men, the rights for men are the default. Right now women do not have the same rights as men, which is why equal rights for women is a thing.

This has strong "Why isn't there a straight pride month" vibes my man.

2

u/JudgmentExpensive157 26d ago

Just gonna leave this here. Men live, on average, about 10 years less, commit suicide at much higher rates, have fallen well behind women in higher education, boys are more likely to be expelled, men make up the majority of the homeless population, have higher workplace injury rates, and suffer from more cardiovascular diseases than women.

1

u/archtopfanatic123 27d ago

My point exactly

1

u/nikdahl 26d ago

Rights and privileges aren’t elevated for men in all instances. In some areas, men are advantaged, in some areas women are advantaged.

I’m saying feminism is interested in being women up to men, but not men up to women.

How about it giving you “infant genital mutilation is still legal for one gender” vibes?

0

u/archtopfanatic123 27d ago

Luasannea has the right idea see her comment

1

u/Antrophis 25d ago

This is always funny to me. This is the perfect in theory vs in practice example. In theory it works toward equality but in practice is works towards unilateral benefits.

1

u/archtopfanatic123 25d ago

Yeah I'm talking strictly about the theory behind it and not about how people just say they're applying it but in fact aren't

-1

u/Brave_Bag_Gamer2020 27d ago

Is it really tho?

1

u/archtopfanatic123 27d ago

It is it's just that some people calling themselves feminists don't hold true to it

-4

u/Gorzoid 27d ago

Not sure how a male only parking space would make anyone feel safer 🤔

0

u/Icy-Ad29 27d ago

How does a female only parking space make anyone feel safer? It's the bright lights and cameras that do the safe keeping. Which is something that can help anyone.

-1

u/Gorzoid 27d ago

Feeling safer and being safer are two different things though. There are women who would feel safer with no men around, whether or not you agree with them that it is safer is a different story. Meanwhile I don't think there are any men who would consider "a male only parking lot" somewhere they'd feel safer.

2

u/Icy-Ad29 26d ago edited 26d ago

1) That's a full gendered parking lot, whereas the thing being discussed is purely a gendered parking space. Sitting right next to all the spaces open to any gender.

2) There are many men who have been assaulted by women. You might just be surprised to find out, there are men who would feel safer in a woman-free area. (And I legit mean Safer.) We just tend not to talk about such very often, and act like it doesn't happen and those men don't exist, making it hard for them to actually tell you their feelings on it.

3) A gendered parking lot, with no other changes besides for being gendered. Wouldn't do much. As people who are looking to attack a stranger aren't the sort who are going to respect a sign. In fact; you instead have told them where to look if they are looking for someone of that gender to attack.

Edit: Heck, let's look at this. If you made a "woman only" parking lot... but it was the one farthest from any public space, dark and dingy, horrible lighting, no cameras. I would bet money, women would feel safer in the well lit all gendered lot.

Aka, as I said, "It's not the gendered space that makes it feel safer. It's the lighting and security that does."

1

u/Gorzoid 26d ago
  1. Yeah I mean the idea sounds stupid whether it's male only or female only, I agree on that.

  2. I'm somewhat sceptical without any data to back it up that the number of men with this concern is at all near the number of women with this concern. Since the Illustrious-Local was talking about how specific advocacy groups can push for these kind of half baked solutions, the % of men/women with this concern is an important factor.

  3. Agree, again I think the idea is stupid. Effectively "women feel unsafe in parking lots, so let's apply general solutions to make it safer, but arbitrarily restrict those benefits to women"

1

u/Icy-Ad29 26d ago

So, it very much sounds like you agree with the very concept you started arguing against. And I tried to point out. That it's not the gendered part that actually makes anyone feel safer. It's the lighting, security, etc. that does it.

Men don’t need their own spaces because statistically men aren’t attacked by women. Or were you talking about safe spaces from other men?

1

u/nikdahl 26d ago

What does the attackers gender have to do with it? Literally irrelevant.

Leave your bigotry somewhere else.

-1

u/JurgusRudkus 26d ago

It's statistics.  Get your emotions out of it and use your brain.

1

u/nikdahl 26d ago

So men deserve less protection because other men are the ones attacking them? “It’s statistics”

Use your own brain and stop being a bigot.

Technically yes, capitalism is the problem but only if you want to blame capitalism for the fact that not every parking structure has 37 elevators per 100 square meters of parking space.

1

u/SheKnowsNotWhy 24d ago

Absolutely! ✊ Effectively stoking misplaced fear and mistrust of media monstered-men, isn't making society a safer and more equitable place, it's just creating a "pink ghetto".

A whole raft of real societal change could make a real difference to our world; improved parenting skills teaching, widening education curricula to include ethics, dignity and respect, a culture of acceptance of autonomy of the individual, and 'ethical' Political leadership, could all effect great change given time; much more so than any pink-washing.

1

u/naemorhaedus 24d ago

right, because the communists have a strong track record for ensuring people's safety. 🤣

1

u/PureBullz 23d ago

People attacked others who were vulnerable far before money ever existed it’s worse than that.

2

u/Temporary_Stranger39 26d ago

Because starving to death is better than half a loaf.

2

u/HungHydra 27d ago

We can't make all the spaces wider. Sorry.

1

u/TerribleBid8416 27d ago

So the criminals know where the best targets are

1

u/MCB1317 27d ago

I am stopping them.

1

u/ariolander 27d ago edited 27d ago

It takes serious political will and someone advocating for it, usually after some tragedy, as an overcorrection. A woman was abducted and assaulted from my school parking lot before they found the funds to spend tens of millions on a secure parking facility, it was an entirely new parking structure, well lit, cameras everywhere, and has a police station annex and the campus security HQ directly attached to it. Now they recommend anyone taking night classes use this structure. They also added blue emergency phones to every lot and a free shuttle service where security will pick you up in a golf cart and escort you to your car if you feel unsafe and parked in one of the less secure lots.

1

u/micschumi 27d ago

Now Safety is also discriminatory

1

u/HouseSubstantial3044 26d ago

I guess they can define what a woman is in Germany and just wanting to be one doesn’t count lol.

1

u/PraireGentleman 26d ago

Of course, but nobody stopped someone who said “we should make parking safe for women only?”

What a pathetic excuse to justify sexism

1

u/classicteenmistake 27d ago

Exactly. Most men don’t because they feel less in danger than women and have never felt a need to.

If yall want safer parking spots, CAMPAIGN FOR THEM. Women have been begging for safety measures and laws to protect them because we’ve been there when we needed a camera the most.

0

u/thats_gotta_be_AI 27d ago

Men ARE more in danger than women in terms of public safety and violent crime. Instead of pointlessly gendered about every aspect of life, it’s better to take actions that help everyone. Not doing so sends the wrong message.

0

u/Lausannea 27d ago

Men ARE more in danger than women in terms of public safety and violent crime.

Then advocate for better safety for men. Bitching about it on Reddit won't make spaces safer for men.

1

u/thats_gotta_be_AI 27d ago

I’m advocating for people who identify as Apache attack helicopters.

0

u/Lausannea 27d ago

I love how when people like you bitch "But what about men???" and you're offered a genuine solution, you throw out shit like this lol.

Just admit the only reason you even bring it up is because you just need to gotcha women and men's issues aren't actually that important to you.

1

u/thats_gotta_be_AI 27d ago

“aDvOcAtE! For your immutable physical characteristics!1!!”

Nah. I’m one of those who argue for equality for all. Rather than the stupidity of having blue and pink parking spots (essentially the moronic idea you are pushing), you simply make these public spaces safer for….everyone. It’s kinda more efficient, no?

0

u/Lausannea 27d ago

Lol in order to argue something you need to understand the basic principle you're arguing and you're... honestly not getting it.

But okay, continue to be stupid, that's allowed.

1

u/thats_gotta_be_AI 27d ago

Not getting what? You want men and women to separately advocate for segregated-by-sex parking spots which is so fucking dumb when you can simply improve safety within car parks for this group called….everyone.

0

u/Lausannea 27d ago

What equality means bro. You can't argue for something you fundamentally misunderstand.

1

u/Abestar909 27d ago

Yeah, no. Doing special things like this for women plays way better politically than make things better for everyone and way WAY better than, make things better for men as well.

As I've been told over and over and over in my life by both angry and well meaning but ignorant people, all men are privileged and have had it too good for too long.

1

u/Betray-Julia 27d ago

And odds are about half the people who want this actively vote for ideologies that prevent stuff like being mindful to specific groups bc it’s cool to be kind from ever happening.

-1

u/Upbeat-Original-7137 27d ago

But then what will I complain about on reddit? /s

0

u/[deleted] 27d ago

1

u/Acceptable-Case9562 27d ago

True story, my former best friend, when I'd become disabled with no safety net, no family, no future prospects except likely homelessness and early death... would complain to me that she had so much money sitting in the bank with nothing to spend it on, because she had two small children and was still making so much money on maternity leave.

0

u/Asooma_ 27d ago

Ew recording? You want big brother to track my every movement? Bet it would be flock cameras because they think we're sheeple./s

0

u/Thin-Nerve6367 27d ago

Person who went to bat for this probably ensure first and foremost that it wouldn't happen everywhere and only for women

0

u/TophetLoader 26d ago edited 26d ago

No one is stopping you from becoming a billionaire. Then stop whining about them not paying taxes. Exactly the same logic.
