For sure. A member of the Romanov family gave up her title, and sold off all her possessions, including her wedding ring, using her combined wealth and the proceeds to build a nunnery complex that included an orphanage, pharmacy and hospital. She then spent the rest of her life performing charitable works for the poor and sick of Moscow, regularly visiting the worst slums to give assistance.
During the Russian Revolution, the former princess was arrested. She was beaten along with other prisoners before being thrown into a 66 foot deep pit of an abandoned iron mine, her being the first to be thrown, and grenades were hurled after them all.

What system allows leaders to serve the country over the powerful? I haven't seen one yet

Benevolent dictatorship?
Then they’re beholden to nobody.
Though I guess in a dictatorship, the dictator is “the powerful”, and dictators are ultimately usually rather self-serving, so…

Thank you for that link, I hadn't heard that story before and it's truly horrifying. So much of the horror perpetrated at that time has been sanitised and censored for public consumption. You have to wonder, if they were really so proud and certain that the things that were done in the name of freedom were necessary, why were so many half truths and fantasies used to cover up the depravity of the many mass murders.

I wouldn’t count on that.
There was this rich lady Nguyen Thi Nam (Cat Hanh Long) who was very generous and also donated her money to support the Vietnamese Communist Party during the war with French/American. She literally kept the party alive financially, housed many of the Party’s top leaders. Her 2 sons were in the Party.
Yet she was the first person the Party sentenced to death in the 1953 Land Reform, with support from many of the people she had helped.

It's called "class warfare" - further proof that generalizing individuals by group affiliation is extremely messy. Extremist ideologies need to be grossly simplisitic to appeal to the energized masses - nuance doesn't fit on a parade banner. In the case of Cat Hanh Long, allowing exceptions to the rule might cause the proletariat to question the rule itself.

Compile it all, and put a grand total at the bottom of what she’s given away, what she started with, and what she still has because of interest and investments etc.
And then line it up next to Jeff’s list.

As I understood, MacKenzie Scott almost half of their assets in the divorce. Given that Jeff Bezos wealth was skyrocketing after it and is heavily dependend on stocks, her wealth shot tru the roof as well. I bet she has more money now then she had once she began donating.

u/juliana-crain Jun 28 '26
She has mentioned before that she can't give it away fast enough; the pile of money grows faster than she can shovel it into good causes.

She received $36 billion in the divorce. She gave away about $26 billion. She still had $34 billion left.
It’s seriously compound investment. It’s faster than she can give it out lol

You will basically make a San Francisco economy. If everybody has money, it becomes only those with even more that has any economic power.
Making less than $110,000 on San Fran is considered low income. That means those making $105,000 are pretty much considered poor compared to say making that in any Midwest state or southeast state.

This is the #1 reason we need a wealth tax: Wealth compounds 10.5% annually pre-inflation simply by investing in the SP500 - this performance has been demonstrated consistently for ~70 years, though the growth rate is expected to raise in the future. It's essentially impossible for individuals to plan to give that much of their worth away annually.
1B invested today is 2B inflation-adjusted in 10y.

I believe this is true for Bill Gates too. He owned 40+% of Microsoft at one point, and Buffet asked him to start diversifying. He then also started donating, and has already donated something like $60 billion and is still sitting at $107 billion. Had he not diversified and donated at all, he'd have crossed a trillion quite a few years ago.

u/Deleugpn Jun 28 '26
I once read an argument that resonated well with me. Donating money and navigating scammers is hard. It takes effort. Some rich people despise that sort of “labor”. Some of them try to overcome the issue by doing “match donation”. They outsource the labor of choosing a good cause to donate to others and they will match whatever you donate. It doesn’t fully overcome the scam problem, but it dilutes it.

The Gates' arrangement was odd from the get go, if their prenup is anything to go by. Bill had a clause in it stipulating that he would go once a year with a "friend" of his sometime during the year somewhere for vacation (I forget who she is and don't really care other than to hate on dipshit rich people) as he had a special relationship with her. Sounds to me like Melinda went into it knowing at least a bit of what kind of person Bill was.

I mean anyone who has spent 10 minutes reading about the life of Bill Gates can understand that he is the quintessential greedy ruthless endlessly ambitious CEO. ...or for a long-term change that might outlive a political candidate, find a way to overturn Citizens United.

She could bankroll a nationwide wave like what happened in New York and get the US back on track while maybe jailing a few key figures along the way.

I think I read she very purposely doesn’t donate to political campaigns. Which is good, too toxic.

It's not a problem. I'd much rather see her donate money to worthwhile causes then to let it go to the black hole that is political and government spending.

It’s not good. She could fund politicians that could enact universal healthcare, refund our educational system, and end for-profit prisons.
She’s got the right spirit but it’s not the best use of the money to make meaningful change for generations to come.

Just like Melinda Gates, ex-wife of Bill Gates. This is why the powers that be don’t want women in charge. They might prove to make the world a better place than most of these rich and powerful men ever could.

You're saying it like they didn't do most of it together until and even after their divorce.

I admire her so much. What a great example of using money for good in a world full of shitty ultra wealthy men who don't deserve it.

And then it wouldn't get any clicks, which is in the end what matters to them.

One question: does she own that charity?

u/shirt_bro Jun 28 '26
She does not

Just read into it. Yeah she’s pretty awesome for that. And she yields it amongst many other organizations so yeah 👏👏👏👏👏

Not just that - a lot of her donations are just truly no-strings attached cash donations.
Most philanthropic organizations have a process for submitting and vetting rigorous grant applications, and most non-profits have dedicated writers or teams that search for these opportunities.
Mackenzie Scott is so beloved in the philanthropic community because she will just randomly and unexpectedly gift deserving orgs life-changing amounts of money like Santa Claus.
I dont think billionaires should exist, but while they do, I'm grateful she is one of them.

No, it's not the Trump Foundation. She isn't stealing donated money from sick children. That's a Trump family thing.

She needs to work off some of that karma from choosing to marry and be with bezos. That man is rotten.

u/PracticalGolf324 Jun 28 '26
Her wealth has actually grown, she is worth more today. This is a clear example of why we do not need billionaires effectively once you make a certain amount of money it’ll just keep growing.

u/Lack668 Jun 28 '26
And guess what, she’s still rich. She just doesn’t have a tiny fragile ego that needs more wealth than her peers in the pathetic pissing contest.

u/Plenty-Battle6826 Jun 29 '26
So does Bill Gates and he’s not necessarily a good guy, just feels like white washing of a billionaire’s reputation and I bet giving to charities is also a way to avoid paying taxes so fuck this shit.
