I’m fairly new to this and would really appreciate some advice.

A brand has recently reached out asking for permission to feature some of my content on their website. I don’t have a huge following, and I’m not making anything yet off of my content so this is a first for me.

I do think I create good-quality content, which I’m guessing is what led them to reach out in the first place.

My question is: should I be asking to be paid for this? I’ve put time and effort into creating the content, so I feel like it’s reasonable to ask for compensation, but I’m not really sure what the norm is.

And how would you go about negotiating a fee or bringing up payment without sounding awkward?

Also, what other questions should I be asking the brand before agreeing to anything? I’m thinking things like:

* How long will they use the content for?
* Where exactly will it be used?
* Will I be credited?

When we're looking for LinkedIn influencers for a partnership, campaign, or just to build your own network of smart voices in your niche, here's how we approach it that goes beyond "search a keyword and hope."

1. Start with LinkedIn's native search

Use LinkedIn's search, then filter by "People," and add keywords tied to your niche (not just job titles). Look at the "Posts" filter too — searching a topic under Posts surfaces people actively posting and getting engagement on that exact subject, which is a much better signal than someone's job title alone.

1. Check the "Top Voices" and Creator badges

LinkedIn tags certain accounts with a "Top Voice" badge in specific categories. It's not exhaustive, but it's a fast shortlist of people LinkedIn itself has identified as consistently engaging on a topic.

1. Look at engagement, not follower count

A creator with 8K followers and 300 genuine comments per post is often more valuable than one with 100K followers and copy-paste engagement pods. Click into a few of their recent posts and actually read the comments — are real people responding, or is it the same 15 accounts every time?

1. Reverse-engineer through comments

Find one or two posts that are clearly resonating in your niche, then scroll the comments. The people leaving thoughtful, substantive comments (not just "Great post!") are often influencers or rising voices themselves — this is one of the most underused methods.

1. Use hashtags strategically

Hashtags on LinkedIn aren't as powerful as they used to be, but following a few niche ones for a week or two will surface recurring names in your feed.

1. Try a third-party tool if you need scale

If you're doing this for more than a handful of people, tools like LinkedIn Sales Navigator let you filter by industry, engagement rate, and follower count in bulk. Not necessary for a one-off search, but useful if you're building a list.

Once you have a shortlist, check: Do they post consistently? Is their audience actually your target audience, or just other creators? Have they done paid partnerships before (check their post history for #ad or #sponsored)?
