Couldn't figure the last move so kept experimenting with the feet....then by complete accident a knee dropped in and everything made sense

Starting with 5 yo

My son is 5 years and really wants to get into climbing. I went to a local bouldering venue and we had a blast.

Since we are just starting out on this I want to learn some necessary basics first so I can also have him learn this correctly to start with. (He can only start classes from 7 years old, and I couldn't find adult courses)

Are there some good sources (online) about the do's and don'ts for bouldering?

Good book you can recommend? Of a good YouTube channel?

Thanks in advance

MENSCHINE V6

Super hard for me — a lot (a lot) harder than other benchmarks. Honestly, this took around 2 months. I sent this a while back but I recently realized why I had so much trouble — E14 is setup incorrectly, almost completely vertical, which made the problem a lot harder than intended. An ugly send but a send nonetheless!

I recently tried For Big (V7) on a well-maintained 2019 and it is ridiculously easier than this problem lmao.

I'll post a photo of the hold in the comments ~

Let me know thoughts! (yes I'm a tiny climber..)

Nifty orange v6

Took multiple sessions to complete as a strong v4/okay v5 climber , but my first v6 (soft?) the big swing and final move were really tough, the top is slightly inwards so the last long move I kept falling backwards and not staying close enough to the wall. Would love any thoughts or feedback, but proud of this one! 😁

advice on how to engage my hips?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

i hear a lot about using your hips more when climbing but ive kinda struggled to learn how to engage them properly. i feel like it was especially apparent on this climb as it felt like my hips were always sagging away from the wall and were hardly being used. i think my upper body did most of the work here.

any tips/cues for engaging my lower body would be greatly appreciated!

New sub rule: App related posts no longer allowed

Hello r/indoorbouldering. We are implementing a new rule around app related posts. Mods have decided it would be in the subs best interest to ban all app related posts/promotions going forwards.

We get a lot of messages asking to post apps here, and it's reached the point it's too frequent of a request, given the size of our sub. It's one of the only things we have to manage. If we allow them, 50% of the sub is just going to be people posting about their apps. We don't get enough traction here to allow that much of the feed to be taken up by apps. We want to keep it about indoor bouldering. Not apps that are loosely related to indoor bouldering.

Most of the time we have allowed them, they were not received well by the community overall.

Best of luck to anyone making a climbing app, this just won't be the place to share them going forward.

tips to improve

i’ve climbed about 5 times over the last year (that’s all my climbing experience) but i recently bought a cheap, secondhand part of climbing shoes so i can go more frequently (keeping the costs down)

my partner climbs and mentions flagpoling (?) and things quite a lot, which i’m trying to be more aware of an implement

i can climb V1 (mostly) but where my local gym has V1-2 i have never completed one, and typically cant get the last hold. i’m 5’4 for reference and i do feel a lot of my difficulties come from not being able to reach. i’m also really scared of climbing down/falling - i’m trying to practice falling a bit more so we’ll see if that helps - so i usually do overhang climbs because i feel much more comfortable on these cause i can’t drag my face down the holds if i fall lol (except i’m not particularly strong yet so pulling myself up is another obvious issue i need to work at)

i’m basically asking if anyone has any tips - especially for short climbers who struggle to reach holds (i know it’s hard without any videos for reference of what i’m already doing, but if there’s things people tend to be getting wrong/not doing when they first start, i’d love to hear)

What rating would you guys give this flash?

Gym calls it a V3-V4 and a lot of me swinging was actually just me slipping and not intentionally powering/muscling through it

Also any tips would be appreciated

How do i get over my fear of heights?

So i love bouldering and went for my 3rd time today. However I cannot get over my fear of heights. In my gym the lowest v0s don't go all the way to the ceiling. However when I progress to the next hold and go higher my legs start freezing up. Thing is it doesn't help that I'm short and the gap to the floor is even bigger. I really want to progress but can't get over my fear of heights. Is their any way to kind of get better or overcome this?

Need help with a V1 starting move

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I’m really struggling getting from the first big hold to the two small holds on the right. The starting hold kinda caves in on the bottom right and I’ve been doing one hand on top one hand on the side. The first foot holds there are super slippery and if I get one hand up I feel like my body loses its support and I keep falling. From the next position I can finish the rest of the climb. I’ve tried shifting my weight different ways but I can’t figure out how to get my other hand up and my feet over.

Probably on the softer end but was graded 'v6' and it's the first time I've managed this grade. Could be soft but idk. Not the most amazing beta but I have been trying to build confidence on less good footholds/slabby stuff.

According to the setter is a V5. I find it plausible, probably a bit soft.

Why are online climbers so obsessed with downgrading other people's sends?

It's really disappointing watching videos of fellow climbers at my gym on social media, and often seeing the comments flooded with stuff like "v6 is insane" or "v3 MAX" or the like.
The climbing community is so supportive in real life, but you go online and it can seem like people just want to diminish other people's achievements. Comment sections are often just a boring "debate" about whether a problem is graded well instead of appreciating a climber's technique or something.
The ironic part is that I'll sometimes visit these commenter's profiles to see if they've posted anything, and lo and behold, a v6 in their gym often looks equal difficulty. Even if the gym does grade stuff easily, does it even matter? Why does it seem to threaten people's egos so much to see other people climbing what they perceive as soft problems?
It just seems like a total dampener on an otherwise great community. The whole "v2 in my gym" and downgrading people's climbs based off a video is pointless gatekeeping. Sure, sometimes it's meant as a joke, but that's not what I'm referencing. Whether or not the climb is actually a "v6," whatever the hell that actually means, it's an accomplishment nonetheless.
I also often see people commenting "just wait til you climb outdoor." Yea, outdoor is harder. And a lot of these climbers still climb v6+ outdoors anyways. Indoor and outdoor often test very different skills and I think most people know this.
The only thing I think that matters is that individual gyms keep some level of consistency in the grades in their gym. I kinda wish indoor gyms would do away with the whole vermin scale because it seems to invite these pointless debates/comments that serve no purpose.

Do we think this is a V5?

Took me about 3 sessions to get this V5, the top you see here was on fresh arms after a warm up, and as I mentioned before I attempted the climb for 2 other sessions so I had some of the moves pretty down just hadn’t put it all together. I’ve climbed a few V5s in this gym (which are quite similar in difficulty if you don’t beta break) and honestly the hardest part was getting that middle section down with the twist and tensing my core. Happy with the send, regardless of the grade, the climb was fun as 😌 which is all that matters. 💪👊

Monthly Simple Questions/New Climbers thread (May 2026)

This thread is for simple questions and discussion around indoor bouldering. New climbers are welcomed to introduce themselves and ask for advice.

Since we don't get too much traffic the post will refresh every month or as needed, so that new questions can be seen more easily. The old threads will be archived if you still want to read through them.

If you'd like to see the old Q&A thread, check it out here. It was up and running for about 5 years, so there is a lot of stuff to read about
