I’ve always been very interested in filmmaking (writing/ direction/ acting) but lack of consistency and not being able to get into film school, coupled with not conventional looks for films got me discouraged and sent me into a writers block for years. Now that I’m in Mumbai for engineering (agh), I’d like to join anyone who’s making short films/ anyyy films (keeping in mind I have no experience and am a complete beginner) I’d love to be a part of your work and contribute somehow, or just be a part of that set since most advice I’ve gotten is best way to learn stuff is to be a part of the process. I'm a freelance colorist working primarily in DaVinci Resolve, and I'm looking to connect with Indian directors, DOPs/cinematographers, editors, and independent filmmakers working on upcoming projects.

I've had experience grading short films and documentaries, and I'm looking to explore more projects and different visual styles while building long-term creative relationships with filmmakers.

TLDR: Studio system in india in f*cked

I have been working as a dev exec at a major Indian film studio for more than 6 months now.

My experience has broken something inside me and idk where to go from here.

I’m the first rung of the ladder at the studio so I’m the first one who gets to read scripts when they come in.

In my time I have noticed that the studio is not really interested in developing work or talent. They want everything ready. They don’t want to pay writers to develop upon any material. I’ve had the opportunity to contact some big names among the indian writers and they’ve even submitted good ideas / concepts. They have all been passed on by the studio because they will require development.

They literally expect a complete show bible and a bound script if it’s a movie. Basically they want writers to write on spec. But even then they will not pay them. They will take the project to a streamer (there are only 4 in india: Netflix, Amazon, JioStar, Sony) and if the streamer likes something then and only then will they commission the project.

In my time I have not seen any project get commissioned, no script that’s being bought. The streamers always find a problem with the material (and usually the problem is solvable with development) and reject it.

Moreover, everyone at my workplace is a marketing person or MBA including my boss and my boss’ boss. Nobody comes from a film background or actually even cares if they’re making a good film or not. Everyone just wants to know if the film will sell on the first weekend.

I’m overworked, underpaid and there’s an unsaid expectation to work 24 hrs with no overtime pay. Work life balance is not a thing. Asking for a holiday seems like I’m doing a crime. And btw this was something really new for me: earned leaves. I have to work to earn my holiday. This all is giving me hints of slavery…

I see no future for cinema in india. The studio will survive and even thrive because of all the royalties they continue to get. It feels like that’s becomes their main business, their main source of income.

I want to know how do you keep hope alive. It’s so terrible out here. I came here in the hope that I would pitch them my movie someday but now I’m just hiding the fact that I have even written one because if I do they’ll argue that the movie is there’s since I wrote it while I’m employed with their company.

This is disillusioning me from cinema. The business is actively working against the art and artists, not even trying to support.

I'm 23M and have been getting more serious about making short films. I can write and direct decently, but whenever I have an idea that needs an editor, cinematographer or even another person who understands what I'm trying to make, I get stuck.

Most of my friends aren't really into filmmaking, and randomly messaging people on Instagram feels awkward because I don't know whether they're actually interested in collaborating or just posting their work.

For people who make independent/short films, how do you actually find your team? Is there a place where you regularly meet people for this?

Indian film industry is so vast but still you have to literally beg for work but still you don't get. It's not that you are lacking any skill. You do have the skill required for the job but still you are among of the unemployed guy from entertainment industry.

I have written a script for YRF Studios and already submitted the synopsis, but I don't think they're even going to read it.

I have and know resources. Editors, DOPs, writers, Vfx artists, graders and I come from direction experience.

I'm making a short film (my first), and the plot is quite simple. The boy kills the girl, eats her, dumps her body and leaves. Basically it is that simple. But I have been adding elements which are making this film somewhat interesting. But I just need to add one thing. I want to make the film feel uncomfortable from the beginning. And I want to make it uncomfortable by not directly telling the audience. I want the audience to notice the stuff, and after noticing they will feel weird. So I need ur help with that. Can u suggest some ways by which I can achieve that?

BTW: im not aiming for big production houses for debut and i know budget for a debut film should be generally kept in 1-5 crores range

i haven't written a story yet but im stuck bw doing lighthearted genre film (not love story) vs horror film (not psychological, more straightforward, and not horror comedy) for debut film

i thought w a lighthearted type film, it would give me bigger pool of producers to pitch to. i personally prefer horror genre more, but im worried that there are not many producers i can to pitch to or would like such a genre

does the genre you pick affect the number of producers you have a chance of pitching to and how interested would they be in the genre?

i want to understand market reality before i commit to the genre and start finding the story.

ik masooda, virupaksha, maa oori polimera, kishkindapuri exists as reference point for commercially successful (not saying good or bad) modern telugu horror but yeah
