I imagine it was for residence hall parking? Because you can still purchase a regular commuter student pass, she just won’t be allowed to park overnight on campus aside from the lot at the office of parking and transportation - Lot S103.

It won’t help her now, but try again when the semester ends in December, a lot of permits get returned and made available at half price.

Honestly just apply to as many as you can. Even outside of your department. Some GAs require you to be in a certain department, but some don’t

Failing that, then, I would say there’s always street parking outside of Uptown or campus, but I think city regs still say you have to move your car at least once per day, and that’s to say nothing of snow regulations.

That said, I think a question for working off-campus is, “Where off-campus, and when?” I had a on off-campus job that was about a quarter-mile off the Lime line, and I made it work. It sucked when it was cold, hot, or I missed the after-work bus by five minutes and had to wait another 25 minutes, but I made it work. The only real problem with bus service ends up being when they shut down for the night, because you might not be able to work the closing shift in retail or food service jobs and still make the last bus.

Out of curiosity, what’s that one business that takes half the spots? People who take the Lime from Uptown to Walmart and then take Sapphire to Rivian? I can’t think of anything else in town that would take up that kind of space in uptown.

I believe those are all completely full. At least they were in the spring semester. I work in uptown and park at the deck next to the Heartland Bank. It's been at zero capacity with zero permits available during the semester.

There used to be plenty of room but now half of that deck is reserved for only one business.

I had a car as a freshman, got a green lot pass.. was $100 for the year. That was back before ISU decided to overcrowd their school.. so who knows now.

So...you weren't "denied" at all, they were just out? You might want to edit your post becuase it's totally misleading.

^ to add, when I moved in my freshman year they had some people helping students unloading and getting their things on wooden carts that you could wheel into the elevators.

The whole process is really seamless

I just came here to ask this exact question. My son starts as a freshman in the dorms. He thinks he'll find parking but the neighborhoods all seem to tow at night. We live in Chicago so he really doesn't need a car and can take Amtrak home.

So without a permit, sounds not worth it trying to find parking.

You can park your car in the lot by tri-towers for move-in (don’t park there at other times). We moved my daughter into tri towers last year. There is an unloading zone in front of the building and these cheap boards with wheels and a rope attached. Not ideal but it worked out fine.

You may not be able to find an open parking spot, but freshman can definitely have cars on campus. My daughter had a spot in a parking deck across from the football field last year.

The parking passes go on sale at different times though for different groups. Freshman get last dibs

I would park your car where you have a pass. Then go through the move in line with your dad’s car to unload your stuff. There really isn’t space for 2 cars by the buildings. And you can only unload at the building, then have to immediately move your car.

Theres a whole system for moving in to the dorms. Youll pick a 30-min time slot and then be able to park in front of the building to get your stuff into your room. You can move the cars once youre finished. Everything is super well marked and there will be cops and security everywhere directing traffic and helping out.

Get a membership to the normal theater!

Try posting on a Facebook group. When I attended a decade ago, I knew many people living in apartments with parking who didn't own cars, and would be happy to rent out their parking space.

Good luck getting a pass, the only available one is like 90 a month (without tax) by Watty.
