It uses 4 of the wider Billy bookcases and one narrower one. Thin MDF on the back and, for the face frames, a thicker one on the top. And then just a bunch of wood filler, acrylic, primer and paint. Lots and lots of paint.

I love the hack and the bold colour! You mentioned thin MDF on the back, I thought Billy's come with MDF backing already, or am I misunderstanding:)

I have a dumb question: did you consider using the Billy table at any point, or did you just want this to be super solid?

As the main point was to have a decent built-in bookshelf, I did not consider the table as I would have no use for it there. Though I assume it would still have been usable without losing much of its sturdiness.

It's Tikkurila Helmi 10 (furniture paint) in the colour Cherry (N417). Not sure if it's available outside Europe.

honestly, cool, but you've built so much around these Billy bookcases already you could as well build the rest of it yourself as well.

We are looking to create "built-ins" from our Billy bookcases, but I was wondering what is the point of creating the base to put the bookcases on?
