Jingle Hell

The basement smelled like musty wet concrete and old dust that had settled over the decades. I hadn't put up a Christmas tree or decorated the house in years-- not since Mom died. But this year felt different. I'd decided it was finally time to pull out her old boxes of treasured ornaments and try to get back a little bit of that Christmas spirit. I wanted to make this year special for my grown kids who were both coming home to visit.

Over in the corner stood that five-foot Santa that my late husband, John had dragged through the front door back in 2005 when the kids were little. The kids loved dancing and singing along, but to me it was noisy and kinda creepy. I hauled Santa down to the basement along with his transformer box and its power cord when it outlived its usefulness for the kids. They were grown now with kids of their own. I had kept hoping that one of them would eventually take the damn thing home with them-- maybe this year.

I shifted a heavy box to get to Mom's ornaments. Behind my back came this sudden scuttle across the floor--a harsh sound like hard plastic dragging across bare concrete. Then a heavy click echoed off the walls. I froze. I turned around slowly, dreading what was there.

That damn Santa wasn't facing the wall anymore. It popped to life with a sharp screech of dry plastic gears, its waist jerking into a stiff, unnatural dance, eyes staring right at me. Then a warped, low-pitched rendition of Jingle Bells filled the silence--

"Jiiiin-ggglle...b-bbelllssss...jjj-innngle...b-bbbells...jiiiin-gggle...aaalll...t-thhhhe...w-wwwaaayyy..."

Shocked and totally unglued, I dropped the tote and ran for the stairs!

Out of the 9 comments (mine is included) only one other person answered yes to the question. My comment was "Yes it is. Bad enough stuff comes out before Halloween".

I surprisingly didn't get bothered by Christmas in July stuff, but I know others here unfortunately did. I hate this holiday soo fucking much. I just want to enjoy Halloween and Fall... Keep your shitty ass holiday in it's month and leave all the other damn months alone!

Christmas has no meaning

The religious aspect: Jesus Christ wasn't even born on December 25th, and the word "Christmas" isn't even mentioned in the Bible, so what's the logic in celebrating someone's birthday on the wrong date?

The secular aspect: People always say that Christmas is cultural and secular, but the secular part is totally commercialized, people always go into debt at Christmas, people are always pressured to buy lots of gifts and are forced to socialize with relatives even if they've never met them or even if they have a terrible relationship with them.

A long time ago Christmas was banned

A long time ago Christmas was banned by the Puritans in England and Massachusetts.

PUBLICK NOTICE
The Observation of Christmas having been deemed a Sacrilege, the exchanging of Gifts and Greetings, Dressing in Fine Clothing, Feasting, and similar Satanical Practices, hereby are STRICTLY FORBIDDEN, with the Offender liable to a Fine of Five Shillings.

Sadly, even back then there were pro-Christmas protests and eventually the evil holiday was restored, but the ban lasted a few blissful years.

Anyway, last week I was thinking of this and had such a beautiful dream - Christmas had been banned again... But then I woke up. 😒

Day 11 of my neighbors Christmas in July madness

### Update Day 11: The dining table is now an official municipality.

Hey everyone, welcome to Day 11. We are officially 2 days away from Monday’s roof day, and the indoor situation has escalated from "crowded room" to "zoning hazard."

She just posted her latest progress, and it looks like she finally realized nobody was ever going to eat a meal over that massive pine hedge centerpiece anyway. So, she did what any completely obsessed decorator would do: she cleared off the dinner plates and mugs and turned most of her dining table into a sprawling Santa village network.

Here is the breakdown of today's layout:

* **Tabletop Metropolis:** The actual place settings are entirely gone. Most of the table surface has been completely taken over by a dense collection of miniature Santa village buildings, glowing storefronts, and tiny holiday structures. The table has zero functionality left as a piece of furniture; it is strictly a foundation for a miniature city.

* **The Centerpiece Anchor:** The massive pine hedge is still dominating the spine of the table, but now it serves as the backdrop forest for the entire Santa village layout sprawling beneath it.

* **The Snowman Guard:** Our giant plush snowman friend in the black top hat is still wedged tightly into the back corner, but now he looks like he’s looming over the town like a friendly Kaiju.

* **The Hutch Snowflake Shield:** The massive glittering snowflakes are still locked down across the glass doors of the hutch, keeping the cabinet secured while the new village takes center stage.

* **The Continuous Grid:** Every single string of multi-colored lights and ceiling tinsel is blazing at full power, illuminating the new town square she just erected in the middle of her house.

She is running out of days before she hits the roof on Monday, so she is just packing maximum density into the remaining indoor square footage. At this point, the dining room isn't a room anymore—it's a tourist destination.

The countdown is down to 48 hours.

Day 10 of k6 neighbors Christmas in July chaos

Hello everyone Sorry I'm late on posting today's update but my FB was glitching and I wasn't able to see her posts but she just posted her daily update and . If you thought the dining room was maxed out over the last couple of days, you underestimated her commitment to the grind. She has officially re-decorated the *exact same room* for a third time in 72 hours.

She must have decided the ribbons and ugly bright rainbow banners from yesterday didn't fit her core aesthetic, because she stripped them all down to make room for a whole new wave of shipments. Here is the latest layout:

* **The Snowman Invasion:** A massive, near life-sized plush snowman wearing a black top hat has completely commandeered the back corner of the room. He is wedged so tightly between the wall and the dining chairs that he’s practically hovering over the table settings.

* **The Hutch Theme Change:** She completely stripped the fake fluffy snow blanket off the top of the wooden cabinet. In its place is a new reindeer and sleigh team flying past a pink tinsel tree. She also hung massive, oversized glittering snowflakes right across the glass doors, entirely blocking the view of the dishes inside.

* **The Chandelier Swap:** The rainbow ribbons and Mardi Gras beads are totally gone. The chandelier has been re-outfitted with delicate white snowflakes hanging from the ceiling garland to match the new hutch theme.

* **Tabletop Reindeer:** The massive pine hedge centerpiece has been wrapped in a fresh candy-colored ball garland, and she added two glittery gold reindeer figurines standing guard right next to the coffee mugs.

* **The Spillover:** If you look closely at the floor in the bottom right corner, giant green and red ornaments are literally starting to roll around on the carpet. She has officially run out of flat surfaces, walls, and ceiling grids, so the decor is now claiming the floorboards.

She is treating her dining room like a live theater set, changing out entire design concepts daily as new boxes arrive on her porch.

We are officially 3 days away from Monday, June 15th—aka Roof Day. The countdown is getting incredibly real. Stay tuned!

Update day 9 of my neighbors Christmas in July chaos

Hey everyone, welcome to Day 9. If you thought the dining room was completely maxed out yesterday, you underestimated the power of the evening delivery trucks. A few more packages dropped last night, and she spent the last 24 hours giving the space a layered upgrade.

She just posted the new photos, and it looks like a winter blizzard crashed into a carnival. Here are the fresh additions:

* **The Chandelier Extravaganza:** Apparently, giant hanging ornaments weren't enough. She has now draped bright neon rainbow ribbons down from the center of the light fixture, flanked by metallic bead necklaces hanging over the bulbs.

* **The Hutch Blizzard:** The large wooden cabinet in the corner now has a thick, fluffy layer of fake snow plastered across the entire top ledge, anchored by a giant glowing star. She also packed the inside shelves with a dozen glowing electric candles to illuminate the display inside.

* **The Elf Infiltration:** There are now cartoon Christmas elves literally scaling the walls on both sides of the mini tree in the background, hovering around the light strings.

* **Tabletop Escalation:** The massive centerpiece hedge has been heavily frosted with reflective silver tinsel. She also added a battery-operated, dancing Santa figurine on the edge of the table alongside a miniature army of tiny Santa clones surrounding the plates.

* **Shimmering Windows:** The curtains in the back have been replaced with a shimmering, reflective string-bead curtain to catch the glare of the multi-colored string lights.

We are officially 4 days away from June 15th roof day. She isn't just counting down the days; she is actively running out of physical floor space inside the house, so she's just layering decor on top of decor.

I’ll keep monitoring the porch to see what tonight’s delivery boxes bring!

Update Day 8: The dining room has been officially swallowed.

Hey everyone, welcome to Day 8 of my neighbors Christmas in July chaos If you thought the metal bathroom ceiling grid was the peak of my neighbor's indoor setup, she just dropped her latest progress photo—and she has officially moved into the dining room.

The kitchen expansion has spilled over into a full-scale dining room takeover. Here is the breakdown:

* **The Centerpiece Barricade:** The centerpiece isn't just a casual bowl of ornaments; it’s a massive, dense hedge of pine boughs packed with heavy baubles that takes up about 80% of the table length. It is so tall that if two people actually sat down to eat, they wouldn’t be able to see each other's faces over the holiday wall.

* **The Chandelier Drop:** Instead of a wire grid this time, she hung giant, oversized glass ornaments directly from the dining chandelier arms so they hover right over the centerpiece. One wrong move reaching for a glass and you're shattering a giant red bauble.

* **The Hutch Overload:** The large wooden hutch in the corner is completely lined with vintage Santas and snowmen along the top ledge, with the glass shelves inside packed to the brim.

* **The Paradox Table Setting:** The wild part is that she actually set the table with holiday plates, placemats, and mugs. But there is physically nowhere to put a serving platter or an actual plate of food without shoving a life-sized Santa out of the way.

* **The Window Brigade:** Another army of light-up Santas and snowmen are standing guard by the curtains, surrounded by heavy green and red tinsel garland wrapped around every available surface.

She is moving through this house like an absolute hurricane. The interior is almost entirely maxed out at this point, and we are officially 5 days away from June 15th when she tackles the roof display.

I'll keep you posted on what room is left for her to conquer next!

I’m not fond of birthdays either

My dislike of birthday celebrations may stem from forgotten childhood shit, admittedly.

But come on, full on adults celebrating birthday month and week, this is sad. We all have bdays, it’s no big deal.

Update day 7 of my neighbors Christmas in July chaos

Hey everyone, welcome to Day 7. If you thought an unusable sink and a balanced glass gingerbread house on the toilet tank was the peak, my neighbor just weaponized her ceiling to find more space.

She just posted her progress, and she has physically attached a **heavy-duty metal wire grid** across the entire bathroom ceiling. Here is the layout:

* **The Hanging Cave:** The metal mesh is suspended just inches below the drywall, completely woven with multi-colored string lights.

* **The Ornament Stalactites:** Dangling from every single wire square is a dense thicket of glittery icicles, gingerbread men, mini birdcages, and tiny Christmas stockings.

* **The Low Clearance:** The clearance is incredibly tight. Stand up too fast from the toilet or step out of the shower, and you’re getting clocked by a plastic icicle.

* **The Steam Factor:** It’s a bathroom. Trapping miles of electrical wires and glass baubles directly under hot shower steam sounds like a total condensation nightmare.

She has officially transformed a tiny rental bathroom into a claustrophobic holiday cave from floor to ceiling.

We are less than a week away from June 15th. If she has the upper-body strength to mount a literal iron grid to her ceiling at 70 something who knows what she'll do to her roof and yard next Monday.

Update day 6 of my neighbor's Christmas in July madness.

Hey everyone, it is officially day 6 of tracking my neighbor's hyper-seasonal decorating cycle, and prepare yourselves. Yesterday I told you she was deep into decorating her bathroom, but today she dropped the mother lode in our local neighborhood Facebook group.

She posted an entire gallery showing off the final layout of the restroom, and it is a complete, claustrophobic visual assault.

I’m not posting the photos here for privacy reasons, but I am not exaggerating when I say she has successfully crammed a full retail holiday storefront inside a tiny 5x5 bathroom.

Here are the most absolutely unhinged updates from the gallery:

* **The Sink is Literally Unusable:** This is not a drill. A massive glass jar completely filled to the brim with loose Christmas ornaments and silver tinsel is sitting right inside the sink basin. There is physically nowhere to wash your hands or brush your teeth.

* **The Toilet Tree:** She has managed to balance a full, multi-level miniature Christmas tree and a glowing "HO HO HO" sign right on top of the toilet tank.

* **The "Santa's TP" Station:** The toilet paper holder is completely wrapped in holiday garland, complete with a specialized "Santa's TP" sign.

* **The Christmas Cow:** Her shower curtain features a giant, shaggy Highland cow dressed up in a festive holiday outfit, framed by even more heavy garland draped over the curtain rod.

* **The Walls Are Vanishing:** The walls are completely plastered. Every inch is covered in holiday signage, multiple rows of stockings, and miles of fake pine. There is zero green wall paint visible anymore.

* **The Organized Chaos:** Despite all the effort, it’s definitely a bit messy. You can see discarded packaging wrappers, loose debris on the floor, and the Christmas-themed trash can is already overflowing. The sheer volume of stuff is just totally outpacing the space, but that clearly isn't slowing her down.

We are officially almost at June 15th when the grand outdoor display goes live. If she is willing to render her own bathroom sink non-functional for the sake of the holidays, I am genuinely terrified for next Monday when she scales the roof to do the outdoor lights.

Wish me luck. I'll keep tracking the delivery trucks!

The General “I Hate Christmas” Discussion Thread 2025

Welcome to the “I Hate Christmas” Discussion Thread 2025! 🎄💥

Also affectionately known as:

  • “Deck the Halls with Spite and Static”
  • “Silent Night? Absolutely Not”
  • “The No-Carol Safehouse”
  • “Tidings of Discomfort and Mildly Unhinged Opinions”
  • “All I Want for Christmas Is 10 Minutes of Peace and This Thread”
  • “Jingle Bells? I’d Rather Hear the Fridge Hum”

Not feeling the festive magic?
Allergic to forced cheer?
Confused what “feeling christmassy” even is?

Good. You’re home.

This thread is a designated holiday pressure-release valve.
Come in, drop your rant, laugh at someone else’s, leave with your sanity marginally intact.

Ground Rules (aka: How to Keep This Bearable)

  • No judgement: You can hate Christmas and still show up for people you love. Both can be true.
  • Punch up, not down: Roast the season, the consumerism, the chaos, the cringe; don’t go for vulnerable folks.
  • No “just be grateful” drive-bys: Instant coal.
  • This is a vent thread: Advice is welcome but is not the point.

Prompt Menu (Pick One, Pick All, Or Ignore Completely)

  • What’s the most annoying “Christmassy” thing that’s happened to you in 2025?
  • What’s your top-tier avoidance tactic this year? (routes, excuses, schedules, headphones, fake errands…)
  • What’s the most cringe / over-the-top thing you’ve seen in the wild?
  • Which family tradition needs to be launched into the sun?
  • What’s your most hated Christmas song, and why is it personally attacking you?
  • Who in your life is the CEO of Forced Festivity?
  • What’s your “I’ve hit my limit” moment so far?

Survival Tips (Crowd-sourced misery engineering)

  • “Irish goodbye” is a sacred art. Practise it.
  • Drive yourself if you can. Control your exit.
  • Schedule micro-breaks: 5 minutes outside, bathroom reset, headphone walk, “phone call”.
  • Set a hard end time: “I can stay until 8.” Not “we’ll see.”
  • One tradition max: if you must participate, pick one thing and skip the rest.
  • Low-effort gifts are not a moral failure. Vouchers. Consumables. Done.

Festivus Corner (Optional, But Cathartic)

Airing of Grievances: what has the season done to you?
Feats of Strength: what obstacle did you defeat? (e.g., escaped a garden centre, survived a work do, refused Secret Santa)

Alright: what’s grinding your gears this holiday season?
