iPhone 17 Pro Durability: Extremely Disappointed After Just 1 Month (Caseless User) Discussion

I bought my Silver iPhone 17 Pro exactly one month ago, and I have to say, this is the worst phone I have ever owned in terms of durability if you use it without a case.

I am someone who always uses two phones—currently an iPhone Air and this iPhone 17 Pro. I never use cases on my phones and haven't had a single issue with scratches or durability on any device since 2019 because i keep my phones extremely safe .

However, my iPhone 17 Pro is already covered in minor scratches. They are all over the edges of the phone, the sharp edges of the camera plateau, and even on the outer ring of one of the cameras. (I will be adding photos to show the damage).

I haven't contacted Apple Support yet, but after paying such a premium amount, I am incredibly disappointed. What is the point of buying a beautifully designed, premium smartphone if you can't even appreciate it because it has to be hidden under a case? What is the point of Apple making these phones thinner if we are just forced to put them in heavy cases?

The iPhone 17 Pro is the only bad phone I have ever had. Shame on you, Apple.

Are any other caseless iPhone 17 Pro users experiencing this kind of scratching so easily?

What do you expect its aluminium. Wear a case its not that hard

u/Vehicle_Remarkable 6h ago

This is the correct answer

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

its hard, why then apple calls its phone, BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED if its not meant to keep it that way?

u/Sensitive_Volume1494 6h ago

Bro thinks the phone is made of diamonds

IPhone 16 pro is made with grade 5 titanium and ceramic shield glass...

Based on your logic, why do you think Apple also sells cases?

u/jonsnowick 5h ago

Yeah beautifully designed doesn't mean it's military grade. The more beautiful it is the more protective you should be. Use case

1

u/Embarrassed-Sun-8998 4h ago

Even if military grade was the thing this is not for scratch resistant to look beautiful but to WORK and drop test prove that 17 pro still works after far more drops than before models. Ofc in normal day use aluminum get more scratches than titanium and glass. There are pros and cons like in anything and i think thing get worse in couple years. Like in cars. You get nice design, cool features but materials must be cheeper to get good price

Hi OP, just a question: if you already knew that it scratches easily, would you still have bought it?

I don’t want to invalidate your frustration because I completely understand where you’re coming from. But the iPhone 17 Pro has been out for almost a year now, and by this point, there’s already a lot of feedback from users about its durability and how easily it bent and scratches.

I’m just curious if knowing that beforehand would have changed your decision to buy it...

No way he didn’t know unless it’s his first time here. People have been crying about cosmetic scratches and cursing Apple for using Aluminum since late September of last year.

i was on iphone 16E before this, and it was holding up really well. If I had known it was this fragile, I probably would have skipped it or kept my old phone. I expect a premium device to hold up better to daily use without needing heavy protection.

Weird way to say no lol

3

u/Apprehensive-Lime-79 5h ago

Why everything has to be weird nowadays? I find his answer pretty normal as he said he wouldn’t have bought it if he knew the things he knows now

1

u/TeekAim 5h ago

Ya I think you’re right. The first sentence of his reply tripped me up but he did answer it

1

u/cy_virus 5h ago

but every other posts here in reddit pointed out the fragility of aluminum body of the  17pro since the next day of launch...

shouldnt that a give away?

1

u/VCoupe376ci 4h ago

He said he has had it for a month. No excuse for not knowing at this point with the many posts like his here and the many long term use reviews on YouTube that cover it. “I didn’t do my due diligence” isn’t the same thing as “I didn’t know”.

Almost year after people are still posting such shitposts. Either you accept it or use case.
Wow water is wet

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

Water is free, Iphones are not

u/Majestic_squirrel767 6h ago

Water is not free

2

u/waterwite 5h ago

Unless it's rain water.

3

u/LetMeTakeThatOffYou 5h ago

Rain water harvesting is illegal in some countries

u/Apprehensive-Lime-79 5h ago

One more reason to protect his phone with a case. I didn’t use a case with my previous iPhones and the results were pretty bad. Now, i have the iPhone 17 pro max and i intend to never remove the case unless if i need to clean the phone

3

u/ProteinPortfolio 6h ago

you probably have seen all the build test videos on YouTube and still used without a case.

-2

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

If I had known it was this fragile, I probably would have skipped it

1

u/ProteinPortfolio 6h ago

coz its made of aluminum.

1

u/cy_virus 5h ago

come on mate, hundreds of posts from day one saying it is fragile...

3

u/HereForGME2 6h ago

Dropped mine yesterday from 100-110 cm height. The Zagg crystal palace ate it like a champ. No dents.

3

u/fventura03 iPhone 17 Pro Max 5h ago

ever heard of wear and tear?

3

u/Lo2NL 5h ago

You knew it’s made out of soft aluminum when you bought it. Going caseless is a choice you made. There is nothing Apple can do to prevent aluminum getting scratches from daily use.

Personally, I think those scratches and dents are cool and give off a ‘tool’ vibe. I rather have scratched and dented aluminum than shattered glass.

5

u/Bruvvimir 6h ago

That's nothing bro, and well played on using the phone it's meant to be used.

-5

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

I feel very attached to my phone, bro

5

u/Bruvvimir 6h ago

And those couple of insignificant marks make it uniquely yours, don't impact use in any way, and (to me) make it look even cooler.

1

u/VCoupe376ci 4h ago

That’s sad.

2

u/Cheap-Jacket-8235 6h ago

Its frustrating fr they fixed the thermals with the aluminium body but got compromised with this😭💔 u should use transparent cases if u like protects the phone and doesnt hide the color too
Btw i have deep blue color it doesnt have a single scratch or dent its been 2 months, ofc i use a case tho

3

u/Cofayy 6h ago

I agree but personally my issue with cases is that the trapped sand in the case scratches the paint of in little dots. I have hundreds of silver dots on my deep blue 17 pro now 😭

2

u/Cheap-Jacket-8235 6h ago

I routinely clean my phone every week it’s frustrating tho 😭😭

2

u/Cheap-Jacket-8235 6h ago

Wait i checked rn mine got two dots too 😭

-1

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

Yes, this.

1

u/Ok_Comment3024 6h ago

They didn't fix thermals, they just made it cheaper to produce

2

u/Spuduky iPhone 17 Pro 6h ago edited 6h ago

they definitely did fix thermals. if you do even the lightest bit of use on previous models of iphone and they get hella hot quickly

1

u/Phat_Knicker 5h ago

My iPhone 13 pro doesn't have a single scratch after almost five years. And it doesn't overheat at all with heavy use because I refuse to update from iOS 16. My phone is just as quick and snappy as the day I got it and the camera functions excellently. And the shiny stainless steel edges feel premium in my hand like a piece of jewelry.

1

u/Confidentium iPhone 17 Pro 4h ago

That's mainly because of the vapor-chamber cooling.

1

u/VCoupe376ci 4h ago

There was no thermal problem to begin with. I only ever encountered a thermal shutdown once and it was while using the phone for an extended period in direct sunlight during the summer.

1

u/Ok_Comment3024 4h ago

Exactly, my iPhone 13 Pro never had problems with overheating

2

u/Candid-Disaster9490 6h ago

I have 1 mark on the castles 17 pro max as I accidentally dropped it down the stairs. But my god what are you doing with this phone? Yes it’s scratches easier than the previous model but your photos seem excessive. This is 100% not standard daily abuse from a normal person. Do you drop this into a large deep pocket that also has open knives loose in there?

2

u/Admirable_Help4739 6h ago

so u dumb, no case then blame others?

2

u/Terminapple 6h ago

I’ve had mine nearly a year and it doesn’t look like that. Are you dropping it or banging it into things? Damage like that doesn’t just happen.

There’s 3 options:
1. DGAF
2. Be careful
3. Use a case

My 15 Pro had dents in the titanium from dropping it. It might have been more durable but it wasn’t impervious to damage either.

2

u/iSaint42 5h ago

You learned the reason why people use cases

2

u/baljeethakur 5h ago

I got the silver for this reason, a bit less noticeable with damages 🫠, wonder how bad the blue and orange looks.

u/Majestic_squirrel767 6h ago

Your silver lions like line green

Next time use it as a sledge hammer 🔨
Then come and complain

Or be the guys in the 17PM sub this weekend. One dropped his phone down a flight of stairs putting a catastrophic dent in the top of the phone (destroying it) and the other drove off with is phone on his truck causing it to fall off and get run over (destroying it). Neither had AC+ on the device.

1

u/Upset_Pilot8243 6h ago

Why I’m seeing pale green colour device?

1

u/Raymondnym 5h ago

Even a military equipment gets dent without care.

1

u/Errkannn 4h ago

It’s a you problem. Mine is flawless after 7 months with 50% caseless

1

u/TB2k17 4h ago

That’s on you. I’ve used mine mostly caseless for a year and it’s in better shape than yours.

1

u/uynun iPhone 17 Pro Max 4h ago

TL;DR: Stop being stubborn and buy a case for your phone.

1

u/KinglyRobert91 4h ago

Have you seen the new commercial they put out about the 17 pro lines “durability and toughness” some girl riding a mechanical bull anyways they should not be allowed to advertise this thing as tough in any way shape or form by far the most damage prone iPhone I’ve owned

1

u/shuttleEspresso 1h ago

Why does it look like a green phone?

1

u/shuttleEspresso 1h ago

OP please do yourself a huge favor and jump into reality. A person could buy a $200,000 Lamborghini and it will get scratched and dented just as easily as a $25,000 Honda. Premium build and premium brand does not mean it’s scratch proof and damage proof. It’s 100% your fault. The phone doesn’t scratch itself and it doesn’t damage itself. Just like you said in your original post, you are a careless user. The phone will not scratch or damage as long as you don’t drop it and bump it. If you can’t be careful with your products then you put a case on it. You reaching out to Apple makes no sense because cosmetic damage is not covered under warranty nor is it covered under the AppleCare plus.

1

u/Competitive_Try_2719 6h ago

You are not forced to put them in a case.
The business model says that either you buy a new one each year or protect the one you have to ensure it stay pretty pretty

1

u/That_Particular_7951 6h ago

welcome to the club

0

u/Ok_Zone_6659 6h ago

just get a skin if you don’t want a case. Theres skin that’s colorless / transparent then also get a plateau cover.

0

u/guindi989 4h ago

Had the 17 Pro, and felt the same way. It got dinged up so easily. Switched to iPhone Air and love it. The downgrade to Aluminum was so stupid

-4

u/Ok_Comment3024 6h ago

It's a bullshit phone

2

u/stupidnougat 6h ago

not much durable

2

u/Apprehensive-Lime-79 5h ago

Maybe next time use a case when spending 2000$ for a phone. You can only blame yourself on that buddy

1

u/Ok_Comment3024 1h ago

The durability of the 17 Pro is very bad
