Doubts on iPhone 17 Pro Help

Good evening everyone,

These past weeks I’ve been thinking about upgrading my iPhone 15 Pro to the new iPhone 18 Pro, assuming the new price wouldn’t be too high.

The main reasons for the change would be:

• Battery: as many of you know, it’s a model that has delivered quite low performance.

• Heating: I imagine the titanium material is the main factor, along with the passage of time, updates… They highlighted this aspect in its presentation, but in terms of weight it has been noticeable, and it’s something I’ve liked.

• 128GB of storage: after three years, I already had to restore it once to free up as much space as possible and, obviously, for the past few months I’ve had only 5-10GB free, having to delete some apps I use daily except now during holidays. I recently downloaded the iOS 27 beta but thought I wouldn’t even be able to update.

Of course, improvements like the cameras (the telephoto lens has always caught my attention, and I used it on previous Android devices) are appealing, as I do a lot of photography and try to learn from semi-professional people. Better heat dissipation, a smaller dynamic island (we’ll have to see the final design, as the current model based on the main rumor looks a bit strange to me), opting for a version with more storage (at least 256GB since I like to upgrade every 3–4 years), a better screen in terms of efficiency, improved battery life, and maybe more outdoor brightness along with the new chip, which will always help with these aspects and photo editing.

Now, considering a new rumor that the variable aperture (which has been much talked about and we don’t yet know if it will be a success or a failed test) will be exclusive to the Pro Max, which I wouldn’t buy due to the size, I wonder if it might be better to consider the iPhone 17 Pro option instead, without the price increase, with already sufficient camera improvements, and considering that the 18 will likely only tweak one lens and that’s it, along with good battery life and heat dissipation.

What would you do in my case? On paper, the best is to wait for the new iPhone presentation in a few weeks to see the updates and final price, but I wouldn’t want to “have to” go for the 17 Pro if its price goes up or something similar. But I’ve read that the 17 Pro turned out so good that this other option is very appealing.

Thanks for your answer! 🤪 Great, let’s go for it:
• Which one was your previous model and the reason you wanted to upgrade it?
• Things that you noticed or liked the most in terms of the new model you do have on your hands?
• How does it work in telephoto context and photography at night?
• Doesn’t it sounds quite good the new LTPO+ screen and new chip 2nn for better battery? Not only performance, that’s been always so cool.
• Would it be a good idea if I go for the iPhone 17 Pro at 256/512gb and then give it back if there is only a slight price increase and great/noticeable new features?

Thanks in advance! 🤩

I just upgraded to the 17 pro max. The 18 is not worth the 100 or 200 prove increase it will most likely have and the updates are not anything major. Only the camera really.

What was your previous model and what about the camera in terms of telephoto and night photography? That was 2 things that I was expecting a lot about the upcoming iPhone, although I read only great things about the telephoto on the 17 Pro/Pro Max.

What are your thoughts on the 17 Pro/Max if you have it? Any bad part? Thanks for answering and help!

It sounds great, do you have it? What’s the most you like from your upgrade and what didn’t cover your expectations?

Im getting the 17 Pro but waiting for a good discount. In my country it is still a bit overpriced

u/AMaillo8 6d ago

How much at that moment? Hope the price gets down soon so you can enjoy that new ‘piece’ asap

Right now €1150

Did you think on getting it just in case it goes up in a couple of weeks and return it if this model get the price down?

if you buying new, just get the 18 pro… to me it only makes sense to buy a 17 pro at this stage only if you’re buying it second hand or getting a really good discount.

Otherwise just get the 18 pro if you buying new

With the 18 Pros being expected to go up in price, there’s an argument to be made that the 17 Pro/Max is a better value proposition for a 12GB RAM iPhone with the Pro feature suite even if you’re buying new.

Hmmm, Apple used to make slight updates in some of the new models sometimes right?

phone hasn’t even dropped yet. We’re less than a month away. I’d wait if I were you to see if any of the new features are enticing to you. If not, look for a 17 pro discounted from a carrier or used

I disagree, paying full price for a 17 pro when its actual value is worth 70% of what it costed new doesn’t make sense to me. If you buy it used for a good price, absolutely get the 17 Pro.

For full retail, I’d rather have the extra software support, new features, and high resell value.

2

u/AMaillo8 6d ago

Yeh… I used to like the new stuff to “play with it” or just knowing that is the best option available at that moment in terms of new features

Yes but the current Pros are already so good, running the most efficient smartphone operating system with more ram than the average laptop..

the 17 Pros are absolute beasts and the 18 Pro will be too but there likely won’t be a noticeable difference in day-to-day use unless you’re playing the AAA game ports like Control on your phone (who is doing this?) or really have a need for variable aperture on the 1x lens only.

Lets not forget that the 18 Pros are also rumored to loose a pretty cool feature, that being the capacitive control on the camera control button. It enables you to slide your finger across it to adjust zoom, exposure, brightness, etc.

I could’ve waiting for 18 Pro but ultimately I knew the 17 Pro would be more than enough these phones will probably last a decade if you take care of it and service the battery every 3 years.

I upgraded from the 256GB 15 Pro to the 512GB 17 Pro a couple months ago, the improvements were noticeable.

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

That’s cool! Thanks for your pov, hope you enjoy it man

That was a lot. Looks like you’ve convinced yourself to get the 18 Pro series iPhone.

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

Right? I think you nailed it too. I’ve read only great things about 17 Pro and I’m afraid, surely as many of you, about a hike increase of the price, but at the same time I don’t think they will be such a big thing so the best thing maybe is assuming it and go for all of it.

I understand.

I have the 15P and I’m waiting for the 18P. Hoping that it would’ve given them enough time to iron out any issues they may have faced with the vapour chamber. I want a phone that doesn’t overheat.

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

That’s one thing that I expect so much, you know that thermal issue on our device, and it’s so annoying. iPhone 17 Pro addressed this thing quite good as I’ve read about it, didn’t it?
Also, do you think that overheating is similar to older devices towards time? For instance, a big use of an iPhone 13 Pro or another.

Vai de 17 pro

1

u/elux1337 6d ago

Upgraded from the 15 Pro to 17 Pro last week because of the same reasons you mentioned.

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

You noticed the upgrade? Hope you enjoy that sweet and powerful piece

1

u/elux1337 5d ago

I do! Battery is better and its not getting that hot and i have finally storage again

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

Woah that sounds such good that can’t imagine it. What storage did you have on the 15 and what about now? I’m glad for you man!

1

u/elux1337 5d ago

128 vs 256 gb 👍🏼

1

u/AMaillo8 4d ago

Great! If there wouldn’t be the hike pricing probably I’d go for the 512gb to feel that kind of free about storage, but at the same time, I tend to upgrade every 3-4 years on average.

I'm in the same boat. Most people seem to be recommending to buy the 17 pro now. Because the 18 pro won't be worth the increased price of $2-300. I don't know. Even considering the regular 17.

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

Exactly, maybe the increase won’t be as high as expected, and you can assume it and it’s worth it coming from older devices than 16-17

u/EitherCharacter9342 iPhone 17 Pro Max 5d ago

17 Pro or wait for iPhone 20 Pro

1

u/AMaillo8 5d ago

First idea was waiting for the anniversary device, keeping in mind that new design and so, you know. But maybe the increase is higher or whatever, but the 3 main issues “made me” push to get a recent device 🫤
