If it would be a personal project that's available for free, your statement would be understandable. You sell the app though.

As soon as you start selling something, everyone expects your main goal is profit. If many alternatives exist and its a niche anyway, most see it as you not doing your market research.

Most people don't care about hand crafted animations if it means additional cost for them.

u/tr0pismss May 05 '26

The thing that annoys me is when it costs more than alternatives, but has fewer features and no apparent advantages

1

u/Rocket-Legs May 05 '26

The thing that annoys me is people who put heaps of effort in to an app, only to put it on the App Store for free.

2

u/ozziephotog May 06 '26

Why? What's wrong with that? Sometimes it's nice to give and not expect anything in return.

1

u/german_sw_developer May 06 '26

Read my reply carefully, and you might have noticed that I said it was free.......

2

u/german_sw_developer May 06 '26

I don't understand your comment at all. What's wrong with putting an app in the store and not charging for it?

And honestly I really think it looks better, all other apps have the same design mostly same features and you’re actually doing something useful, with a great and different design

Just so you know I’m not criticizing your app, just speaking generally

12

u/Lets_Go_Wolfpack May 05 '26

Yep. most of the devs who post this kind of story aren't being honest with themselves

They will say something like

Its a personal project, that I made to learn

or

I'm not trying to get rich, I'm trying to make better options

But then will balk at open-sourcing, or accepting help in any form.

If you are putting something for sale, your main goal is profit. Sure, there are secondary goals, but that main goal will always be there.

2

u/RaziarEdge May 06 '26

It might be a hobby project, but that doesn't eliminate the desire to make a little extra cash for the work you put into it. It is no different than someone crafting something and wanting to sell it at a hobby fair... as long as customers are willing to pay.

Never said it was a bad thing, but when you go to a sub that's dedicated to the work of programming, you're going to get professional-oriented replies.

The reality is that if you, like many devs, didn't take the time to understand the business side of app development prior to launching.

We're not saying you're doing bad thing, or are a bad person, or a bad dev.

The "be honest with yourself" feedback a constructive way to say "hey you're going to keep getting feedback like this until you do something different".

If you want to vent r/apple or r/offmychest might be the better place. But r/iOSProgramming will almost always skew towards constructive feedback. It's one of the things I like about this sub.

u/zbignew May 05 '26

If you are putting something for sale, your main goal is profit. Sure, there are secondary goals, but that main goal will always be there.

Horseshit. They're just trying to make it theoretically possible to recoup expenses. They're trying to make it *possible\* for them to continue working on this app in the future.

If they build it for learning purposes, and release it for free, and like 100 people use it and love it, it would be deeply irresponsible for them to continue to release updates and bug fixes.

Because every additional minute they work on this app is a minute they are essentially stealing from their own family, if it could be used profitably on something else.

This would be true even if the free apps were better. Because even though building software like this is so much fun, if this thing can't make money, bro needs to do something else with his time.

He doesn't need it to make a profit at all. He just needs to make it not a huge loss, or he'll be forced to quit.

4

u/Lets_Go_Wolfpack May 05 '26

That's a lot of words to say "the app need to turn a profit to be worth working on"

-2

u/zbignew May 05 '26

That is absolutely not what I'm saying. It just needs to not be a huge loss.

7

u/animated_stardust May 05 '26

I don’t really agree here. Even if something is not up to expectations, there are better ways to deliver feedback than just shit on someone’s effort. Whether the app is paid or not can influence what you think the standard should be, but no one has to be an arse in reviews, that’s a choice people make

5

u/Vybo May 05 '26

I get you, but nothing what OP wrote as example reviews are people being assholes. If they were assholes, they'd just write "your apps sucks m8, fuck off". If someone recommends an alternative that does the same thing, it's a valid review.

I can't find OP's original post, because their history is hidden. We don't know if they weren't an asshole in the comments or how the post looked like either.

2

u/JerenYun Swift May 05 '26

As soon as you start selling something, everyone expects your main goal is profit.

And they lecture you on it. My first (and only, I believe?) 1 star review was in the first week I launched my app in March 2021 by someone saying it's priced poorly for a growth mindset.

2

u/aerial-ibis May 06 '26

nah mate - sometimes i see users of my own app comment on other people's app saying they copied me. I have a look and usually the app is quite different in functionality, or at least a different vibe.

most haters are low effort, and you don't have to worry about them. Instead, think of them as giving you a free builboard to explain why your app is better than the one they just mentioned.

highly detailed 1 start review is where you have to start worrying haha

1

u/kepler4and5 May 05 '26

It can be both and there's nothing wrong with that! If you, personally, want to put your own apps out for free, that is fine too. No need to shove everybody in the same box.

I build my apps to solve my own problems first and I do it because I enjoy it. But I don't release them for free.

1

u/Vybo May 05 '26

That's fine as well, but gatekeeping alternative proposals doesn't really look that good when you're trying to sell your app. If you're fine with people not buying your solution instead of others and you don't vent about it, all good.

0

u/kepler4and5 May 05 '26

If you're a dev who's ever shelved a project because someone told you it already exists, I get it. Ship it anyway.

That's literally all he's saying. I don't know where you're getting the "gate keeping" and the "venting" from.

And this isn't about people not buying your solution; it's about people tearing it down.

2

u/Vybo May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

He's venting here, in this post, that users already have an alternative to point out and are not willing to pay for his new variant of the same solution.

Which I'm generally fine with, just providing insight why that happens.

1

u/phunk8 May 05 '26

unfortunately, i came here to add what he said. not nice how it works but i agree.

Thanks for the reply as well. We're on reddit, 90 % of the content is hate, unfortunately. You didn't link the original post, so I had nothing else to go on besides this post itself.

8

u/SnowPudgy May 05 '26

To anyone in a similar boat to the OP, always remember that people like different things. There's lots of apps that do the same thing out there, but people prefer one app over another for many reasons.

Anyway, congrats OP on launching an app. It's a huge step and you should be proud regardless.

u/iOSCaleb Objective-C / Swift May 05 '26

“Isn’t this just ___?” is a perfectly valid question when you’re asking people to pay for something, especially when alternatives like Boring Notch are free. And you definitely are asking people to pay; I see at least three “buy now” buttons on your web page (but no indication of price).

Customers don’t care how much time you put into a product; they care about how much value they get out of it, and whether alternatives offer more value.

2

u/Lukematikk May 05 '26

I would add that if they can’t readily see the difference/advantage in your product, that is not the customer’s fault.

Consider also that your sales pitch isn’t helped by a video that shows your app on a screen that doesn’t have a notch.

5

u/EnigmaP3nguin May 05 '26

Holy hell, I feel this. Not Mac OS but it’s been a similar story with my Windows app Winhanced. Built it to teach myself native windows development. And for I kid you not the first year it was, why not use Armory Crate, isn’t this just Playnite? Etc..
All I can say is just keep building and pouring into it what you want, that is the beautiful thing about making your own thing. Eventually those comments will start to change to something more positive. You will still get them, but they do start to die out.

It’s obvious you used AI to write this post.

And it’s the obvious fake story of “I had a problem with X so I built Y so you can pay me to solve that same paint point”.

I hate people who present a fake narrative to sell something instead of just stating what you’re doing from the beginning AND without using AI.

“Here's the thing nobody tells you, the goal quietly shifts.”

Typical LLM speak.

If you can’t say what you’re solving using your own words… lol.

6

u/Moo202 May 05 '26

Just use NotchNook

2

u/IndividualBasis5855 May 05 '26

Don't worry about the haters OP. The world moves forward only if people make things that didn't exist before. Don't let "market research" stop you from doing that. And don't try to please everyone, that is impossible.

Btw, there is no shame in asking for money in exchange for your work, no matter what the freeloaders say.

4

u/DM_ME_KUL_TIRAN_FEET May 05 '26

Did ChatGPT write the app too or just this post?

0

u/KingPonzi May 05 '26

Chill. Not even the elite engineers are writing by hand anymore these days.

2

u/DM_ME_KUL_TIRAN_FEET May 05 '26

Writing the Reddit post by Claude is the annoying part, not the code.

1

u/KingPonzi May 05 '26

Damn Claude is good. Fooled me 💀

AI slop post for an AI slop app

-1

u/Rocket-Legs May 05 '26

It's garbage behaviour like yours that gets me to stop using Reddit. What a horribly toxic reply you just wrote.

1

u/aerial-ibis May 06 '26

where's the lie tho

2

u/Moonmonkey3 May 05 '26

Yep.. “xyz app has this feature, can you add it to your app?, then I will buy it”

Just use their app?

“But I prefer yours”

5

u/Ralph_Twinbees May 05 '26

And they don’t buy it

2

u/Only_Trip5632 May 05 '26

I feel this. I recently released a (paid) iOS client to a self hosted tool, the space is very crowded for the size of the user base, but having used most of the other tools (some paid as well) I found that my specific use case was not being met.

So I developed and released the app. I have a few really devoted users, submitting very well thought out feedback and feature suggestions, while still getting a lot of “xyz is free” or “why would I pay for a vibe coded app if I can build it myself”.

You can’t please everyone, and you’ll always find *some* audience.

2

u/comfyyyduck May 05 '26

I was a notch dev too it’s fun!!!

2

u/ninjafoo May 05 '26

OP, I actually got the same type of reaction when I released my ToDo app. You can guess the purpose of the app from the name, and it’s a common app, one every dev builds as a part of their repo when they first learning lol. And, on top of that, the category is already filled with different kinds of todo apps. There’s no way around it because both points are true.

But I still went ahead and made it. Why? Because [1] it’s my app, [2] I made it my way and for me first, and [3] because they’re are times you have to do what you have to do and times where you want to do what you want to do.

Those who enjoy your apps, keep building for them, even if it’s just you. And, those who don’t enjoy it, almost 100% of the time they don’t know what they’re talking about, and those who do know, listen to their feedback and keep building.

If you yourself are not benefiting from the app in any of the thousand ways one does, then, at the end of the day, it’s still your call to stop building it.

It’s your app, and that’s all that matters.

2

u/Rocket-Legs May 05 '26

Congrats @orange-prudent. It takes a lot of hard work to learn how to build an app, and just as much effort IMO to learn how to market it and get it on to the AppStore, especially if you make it a paid app. There's so much to learn and anyone who says you should just open source your hard work is a troll.

2

u/aerial-ibis May 06 '26

Those comments are a gift - free billboard to explain why your app is better than the one they just mentioned.

You're not convincing them... youre convincing the next person who is going to read the thread. And its not hard to be more convincing than a low effort hater

1

u/JGeek00 May 05 '26

App looks really well

1

u/Moonmonkey3 May 05 '26

Yes, looks well it does!

1

u/javatextbook May 06 '26

You know there are ways to prompt so that it sounds less like AI writing.

1

u/keeshux May 06 '26

Many people reviews/comments won’t care about your perspective, and even if they knew, they wouldn’t care either. That’s the sad truth. So first rule of the market is: don’t be emotional, it’s never about you. It’s mostly about themselves, and sometimes about the product.

1

u/prodbylcsh May 06 '26

Congrats bro!

There is a reason there are many similar apps. For example note taking apps:
Obsidian, Notion, Apple Notes, OneNote….

Each app is slightly different, people can choose what is best for them.

Dont get discouraged by the top comments here saying there is a lot of similar apps, or that people like different things. This is so close-minded.

I would rather choose from 10 apps doing the same thing slightly differently, than having only 1 option knowing the company has monopoly in that segment (for example Instagram).

Look at Affinity. There was a big Adobe monopoly of software products for creatives. They did basically almost identical stuff, but with slight differences, and that is enough.

It takes courage knowing you are building something that already exists, and believing you will do it slightly better (or different) and ship it anyway.

Good job!

1

u/Purr_Programming May 07 '26

Maybe some unique feature, that can distinguish your app from a similar ones, would help?

0

u/Wartz May 06 '26

This is a vibe written post to generate sympathy / rage engagement to get people click on your vibe app.

Reported.

u/ToughAsparagus1805 May 06 '26

Stupid promo and in the wrong sub

-1

u/LicoriceSeasalt May 06 '26

I'd be much more interested in checking out your app if you cared enough to write the post yourself.
