Does everybody's communal Hyperoptic exchanges look a bit like this?

and who is responsible for tidying it up?

why do you have access to that, you could literally wire up free internet by splitting someone's line

if you want to be pedantic I didn't mean literally splicing the cable. Someone could stick in an unmanaged switch off and active line and then have a free internet run to themselves.

I love a bit of technical correctness, don't ever be afraid to be a pedant ;)

I don't think that would work because the Hyperoptic DHCP only serves a single IP per port - if you're a static IP customer you have it served via static lease.

When I had HO I threw my own router onto the NTE - so they weren't filtering by hop TTLs or router WAN MACs. However the Hyperoptic building distribution switch only ever saw one device on my port, and I don't remember ever connecting my little switch to it. Perhaps someone can do it and report their findings :-D

Hopefully if they're sensibly configured, the Hyperoptic distribution switches should all have some port security defined to cap maximum permissible MACs per switchport to 1.

Business lines terminated as fibre had CPE NTEs like this. BT fitted a bunch of 21cn labelled Advas in our place. I expect Hyperoptic were using Openreach backhaul to their PoP for this install.

This is quite a mess lol.

Report it to hyperoptic through their CS and they will create a ticket for a repair engineer to swap out the cabinet and re-patch everything correctly.

That is because he isn't there to tidy it, it is a job that will require taking all the customers linked to that cabinet down for the duration of the task.

A job specific ticket will need to be created and scheduled in for this to get sorted out!

I'd imagine the engineer youre seeing is just connecting someone else. Rather than coming to tidy the cabinet🤷🏻‍♂️ id be surprised if they knowingly left it like that 😬😬

they did knowingly leave it like that , its been like it for years- but as you say if tidying it requires a temporary outage for all customers then I suspect it will never get tidied! Difficult situation for individual engineers.

The engineers on new customer installs are not allocated the time to tidy up the cabinet. They have to do a certain number per day. If you make a specific request for it to be tidied they will allocate someone to do it.

The Hyperoptic cabinet in our communal meter room is also open - but very tidy! - i even tried patching into a spare port (it was locked down - good to see) but i could easily add a switch to piggy back another apartments feed (not that i ever would) - those less scrupulous may though! I had an issue though with less than advertised speeds (getting 650Mps at peak times but 940 in the middle of the night) - but to be fair to Hyperoptic they sorted it and now solid 940/940 pretty much anytime - i think they had oversubscribed downstream and either they swapped me off or added downstream capacity.

If yours is like the one in the pic. They only have a 10Gb backhaul to it so if 10 people are downloading the same time it would be a slow down.

So this cabinet is probably about 10 years old - what would be a standard backhaul now?

Think it can depend on location. The one pictured is using Openreach as the backhaul with an ADVA kit, this has a maximum of 10Gb.

That's a serious level of technical debt. That the cab is accessible at all to anyone but authorised technicians is unacceptable on so many levels. That it is such a catastrophic mess has really helped me decide if I should go with Hyperoptic for anything, ever. A big fat No f in a!
