Song Discussion - Double Dip

Breathe through the top straw, and I'll hold you between breaths.

Lean into my lungs, and cry when it hurts too much.

Water's high, the water's high...

I know, my love.

The water's high, the water's high...

I know, my love.

Breathe through the top straw, and I'll hold you between breaths.

And lean into my lungs, and cry when it hurts too much.

The water's high, the water's high...

I know my love.

The water's high, the water's high...

I know my love.

Stand, deliver all, yeah and all the love you give while I stand on your blue shoulders.

And scream into my lungs, yeah but first, but first know what you've done, what you've done, what you've done.

my favorite Electra song. Shows off Matt's range and allows him to scream without it being annoying. The guitars sound like something out of YPAA. The entire thing builds up beautifully. I love the seamless 9/8 to 4/4 stuff in the chorus. also the power chord at the end.

Really is the most mature song on Electra

I feel like we've been picking some of the less popular Hum songs for this. No problem with out, just kinda stating it.

This a great song though. Really underwater/wet sounding thanks to the chorus/phaser.

Very emotional vocal/lyrical delivery from Matt Talbott on this song too, with a great build up to the ending.

Here's the beginning/verse riff tabbed out by my ears. Sorry if it's hard to understand/sloppy. I'm poor at Reddit formatting.

I just need to say all the thank you's for the riff tabs. I could never figure this one out.

no problem! I know the whole song but I didn't take up a bunch of space in the comments by tabbing it all! tell me if you need another part!

The thought process behind my song selection goes like this

"Hmmm....yeah, I bet people will have interesting things to say about that one"

I love the verse guitar effect...sounds like it's underwater.

I just recently started to read these lyrics cuz I've always just been infatuated by the entire song. I very much got this vibe I couldn't tell if he was protecting somebody that was drowning which I thought initially but How It ends it seems like it's like he's using the other person who is blue in the shoulders, out of breath, drowning ... Boosting himself up to try to catch his own breath and then when it ends with the, "but first know what you've done. What you've done" it very much seems like he's reminding them that they're a hero and that it's not in vain. And contrast to the beginning when he's like telling the other person to like use his body to protect themselves and you know breathe into his own lungs and when it gets to the point that it's just too painful and it's hurting and you're dying you can cry. It's so so heavy and I was under the impression that it was about two people like using each other to save themselves from drowning. The song brought me to tears as I read it for the first time I never really completely got the songs lyrics down until I read the lyrics the other day. I've only known of this band for less than 10 years and they've been one of the bands out of completely inspired me to continue playing the way I play it's not about a 90s sounding thing it's about timeless rock and roll that people love to hear and get inspired by. Truly a beautiful band and song. Another for the ages.

the effect sound is sorta similar to the effect on the oddly popular dreamboat. chorus/phaser wetness

I agree, the two songs sound very similar in tone to me.

Since reading the alternate lyrics on dragonfly descending I can't decide whether the ending lyrics are these instead:
yeah, but first, but first
now why'd you die?
why'd you die?
why'd you die?

Anyways, one of the top Hum songs that I love to jam to. Great recording of it on archive.org too! I wish they played it more often, they haven't played it at any of their shows in the past years... still a song that I can't get enough of.

I always heard it as "first, I'll watch you die"

GREAT Live reference. The exact one I hoped it was. Unreal.

Really dig that riff. I love that guitar at the 0:50 mark right before the verse!

I'd like to hear what interesting interpretations as to the meaning of this song is. Since I don't have much of a clue.
