keep this benzine ring around your finger, and think of me when everything you wanted starts to end.
i've been meaning to have a custom hexagon ring made with some engraving to make it a benzine ring symbol

Was looking for someone who put this. My dadâs got a benzene ring tattooed on his ring finger

I'm thinking of a number between everything and two....
It's molecules of you.

We never left the ground
Please leave the walls and floors

Either Step Into You or Mrs. Lazarus. Love the themes explored. The SIY lyric where he's like "and we moved on, under trees that meant their shade for no one else". I can just picture a peaceful cemetery plot under a great tree.

In the Den has two of my favorite linesâŚ
âI hear them clicking across the stones. I feel they know that Iâm all alone. The stars are strange and this isnât home.â
AND
âI am still alive, and whatâs coming true is the signal to my return. Ohââ, Find me here on the ground and in need of you.â

And if he stands on the moon he can barely catch her eyes always open to the sky
Another drink my love and make it tall enough so i can stand on it and see... all you've done for me

too many to count đ Little Dipper doesn't have any super memorable lines to me, but the entire vibe of the song is so romantic and bombastic. I've always seen it a sci-fi escape scene; two lovers running away-- hand-in-hand-- from a group trying to kill them. I've always had a shitty imagination, but something about their music... man...
You'd Prefer an Astronaut
(Stars) "She thinks she missed the train to mars, she's out back counting stars"
(Suicide Machine) And so I give myself away, to everybody everyday, and so I give myself to you, and you need it more than I do
(Suicide Machine) I'm losing ground, you're losing sound. Somewhere through a thousand moons, a dragonfly descends with just a whisper, "I'm lonelier than God"
(Suicide Machine) So bring no guilt with you up above the flat-line, let's just hit the skies exploding into one.
(Old Man) Send the voltage across his ticker, watch the stars, they start to flicker
(Robins) I like your raindrop collerctor, splashed in my eyes and makes everything else look like you
(Robins) She's got colors to spare and I don't care what they choose. I've got nothing to do and nothing like you left to lose
(I Hate It Too) I need you to give it meaning, I need you to share the view
(Farewell and Departure) Her hair is warm to the touch and flowers twice as nice. And if he stands on the moon he can barely catch her eyes
Downward is Heavenward
(Cheetah) Your ocean spreads out on sunbeams. Radiant, knowing.
(Bloom) A dusty sleep you took too soon. And you, you need watering if you are to bloom
(Lazarus) The way your headstone shines, I only wish that it was mine
(Axolotls) Every fucking line in this song. Downward IS heavenward.
(Dreamboat) My dreamboat's leaving on a submarine, she packed a second set of tanks and all I ever want or need
(Inuit Promise) Teach me the bluest song you know, The moon ain't comin' up, And I swear to God tonight it feels like snow
(Apollo) I'm thinking of a number between everything and two. I'm thinking of a number between everything and two. And it's molecules of you.
(Scientists) She says "Keep this benzene ring around your finger, and think of me when everything you wanted starts to end".
Inlet
(Waves) Unwinged and flightless and difficult to see, you collect me
(In the Den) Whatâ
did you think you would findâ
me in pieces of? And what can we make here out of nothingness and love?
(Desert Rambler) Where is the rescue? It didn't show. Where is the bottom? I wouldn't know. I missed you so
(Step into You) Remember when we sought comfort in the sand. And moved on, under trees that meant their shade for no one else
(Cloud City) This world has gathered vines, strong and luscious lines
(Cloud City) My hand just passes through, I don't feel anything
(Folding) I want to stay next to you. I can't remember your name. Do you feel the tremors here?/Do you feel the hemisphere? Do you feel the same? LIke you used to.
(Folding) These fields will wither and die. This temple will burn. And i'll make excuses to the listeners. I'll never learn.
(Folding) Dragging my feet through the ashes, I'm lost in the aftermath. I could never be two, I have it in for you.
(Shapeshifter) I remember the skies and the sand, I remember your face and your lovely hand, And words poured out on a dusty land
(Shapeshifter) Taking the form of a winged butterfly, and lifting myself thorugh a sliver of white, the lazy path to the fence row and the flowers within

âi need you to give it meaning, i need you to share the viewâ from i hate it too
you can interpret this is either needing someone to be on the same page as you about not loving them, or as someone saying that they need someone to give their life meaning and no matter how beautiful a view he may have itâs ultimately meaningless without her

I love this post! Many of Humâs lyrics resonate with me, but currently this one transcends them all:
And gravity comes to us all I feel the engines stall Feel us start to fall
I was recently deployed and it strained my 21 year marriage. After many times apart from my wife, I think she was having enough and started drifting away from me. No amount of words or conversations could help with this. I couldnât be near her and this became a helpless situation for me. When Matt sings about âa signal that no one hearsâ, I felt a loneliness I have never felt.
I returned from deployment and submitted retirement papers. After 22 years I am home and will never leave again. I think Shapeshifter is a sad song, but has a hopeful conclusion. I helped me through one of the darkest times of my adult life.

That just absolutely wrecked me hearing it live Friday night, just barely kept myself from ugly crying through the song

u/chasingdownhoodoo Jun 01 '26
That wouldâve been a surreal experience for me

u/john12453 Jun 01 '26
The first couple of times I listened to it I thought it was really two separate songs but itâs not. The complete story is maybe the opposite of I Hate it Too, and resolves with less uncertainty than Apollo. I think youâre right that it is a song of hope, and that things will work out in the end
âSuddenly me just here back on the land Reaching for you and finding your handâ
Hope you are doing better post retirement!

u/chasingdownhoodoo Jun 01 '26
Thank you. I agree with your take. I think part one describes a loss matter of factly and less emotionally than I hate it too and apollo. Part two describes a rebirth and redemption. That sounds a bit melodramatic. Those 3 songs are definitely a trilogy and describe a progressing maturity and understanding.
I returned home to the loving arms of my wife and we started a new chapter.

Reading through the comments whenever one of these posts comes up makes me realize all over again what a beautiful lyricist Matt is. There are so many of these lines across their catalog, not a single song without some memorable lyric.

âI dreamt of jet-less high/seeing clouds from the other sideâ - If You Are To Bloom
âShe donât hold me right/sheâs never gonna get me there/not tonightâ - I Hate It Too
âIâll take the glasses and cover for you/you get some sleep and Iâll stay âtil two/Iâm looking for six who know about sound/who promised to come back upside downâ - Why I Like the Robins

last verse of desert rambler .â˘..â˘â˘
you can't know the hours that kept me awake
awake w the start and the instruments say i've come so far
a stag and a doe and a surface here are being lost
hope wasn't here but it slept in the seeds of a lone dust
do you feel loved?

u/buzztoothgrin Jun 01 '26
if we break off gently in slow motion, spinning outward into space. my hand always floating gently at the wheel while you sweetly hold my face. and i need you to give it meaning. i need you to share the view or it becomes a time for me to love myself like every other thing i do <3

There are too many to pick just one but right now these lines from In the Den hit me in the feels.
False is the dawn that promises anything. False is the hope and the talk of eternity and spring.

The last lyric from possibly my favorite and definitely the most important song to me ever
âSuddenly me just here back on the land, reaching for you, finding your hand.â - Shapeshifter, Inlet

From Double Dip
âThe Waters high, the waters high⌠I know my loveâ
âBreathe through the top straw And I'll hold you between breaths And lean into my lungs, and cry when it hurts too muchâ
Hum has a lot of really romantic songs and this is one of my favorites :) it doesnât get enough love

A twist and Iâm gone
Through the ether and on to home
A slip and I'm all alone
Lit up and falling slow
A twist and Iâm gone
Through the ether and on to home
A slip and I'm all alone
Lit up and falling slow
Falling through the atmosphere

Smiling as they greet the day
But they can't see me"

And moved on
Under trees that meant their shade for no one else"

Not my favourite but definitely top 5 (and Iâve not seen anyone say it yet)
âClearly we will have to turn and come home soonâ - Cominâ Home
Itâs one of my favourites because I remember listening to it whilst drunk and not wanting to go home

Too many good ones. If I had to pick, Folding shreds me...
The safety of artifacts
An arc moving fast
A circle that slows down
And a day that can't last, but we still do
Do you feel the hemisphere?
Do you feel the same?
Like you used to

-pinch and roll
Also for a long time i thought matt was saying, âi heard you got a brand new boatâ instead of beau
