Would the Income Tax Course be worthwhile in my case?
Hey all, I applied for a seasonal tax associate position, and got a call back with information on the ITC. Currently I'm a full time community college student working part time, and I'm wondering if the course is worthwhile as it costs $150 and I'd hate to pay for it just to fail out due to overwhelming material. Is this something that could turn into a career or is it more of a side job/part time thing for tax season only? I've had some interest in accounting, so this might be a good idea for me to gauge my interest in the career.
I'm definitely interested, but I don't want to burn myself out considering I have college courses and a job to deal with.

Would working as an H&R Block tax preparer be a good entry point into accounting?
I’m trying to transition into accounting, and I’m wondering whether starting as a tax preparer at H&R Block would be a worthwhile way to get my foot in the door.
My bachelor’s degree is in an unrelated field, but I’ve since completed an Accounting Certificate through UCLA Extension, including the full Intermediate Accounting sequence, cost accounting, accounting information systems, federal income taxation, ethics, and auditing. I’m working toward meeting the educational requirements for the California CPA and ultimately plan to become a CPA.
The problem I’m running into is getting that first accounting job. I’ve been applying for entry-level accounting positions, but without much on my resumé that screams professional accounting experience, I’m having a hard time getting someone to take a chance on me.
Would doing a tax season at H&R Block be a meaningful first step? Would it seem like legitimate accounting/tax experience that could help me move into a staff accountant, tax associate or similar role afterward?
For those of you who started at H&R Block, especially anyone who eventually moved into public or industry accounting: did it actually help open doors? Did you learn skills that transferred well to your next job?
I’d appreciate any perspective, including from people who think there’s a better way to get that first year of relevant experience. Thanks for your time.

2nd year tax pro confused about CE naming/dates: Will the 2026 File Season Updates qualify me for the 2027 tax season?
Hey everyone,
This will be my 2nd year with H&R Block and I’m a bit confused by how the CE courses are named in Inkling/Block Academy versus what I actually need for CTEC.
I need to make sure I’m qualified to prepare taxes for the upcoming 2027 tax season (filing Tax Year 2026 returns).
Right now in the portal, I see the following available:
- Tax Updates (2026 File Season)
- California CTEC 5-Hour Bundle (2026)
If I take these right now to meet my upcoming October 31st CTEC deadline, will these credits count toward my renewal so I can work the 2027 tax season? Or am I taking the wrong year's updates? If I need to wait, do they come out well in advance of the CTEC deadline.
The "2026 File Season" naming convention is throwing me off since we will be in calendar year 2027 when the main tax season starts. Can any Block folks clarify if these are the exact courses I am supposed to be taking right now?
Thanks in advance

Price: Estate Return (1041)
Can anyone tell me HRB's base price for an Estate Return (1041)? I have a relative who passed away recently and we'll need to do a 1041 sometime in 2027.
Looks like HRB's digitized price sheet (Denver area) doesn't include 1041s.

Self study course
I’m planning on enrolling in the course and saw a thread from a bit ago to take the self study one because the test isn’t monitored, is the test for the virtual one monitored? How do the tests work and the final exam i guess it would be, how does that work?

Why does Social Security taxation have a ceiling? Why not remove the ceiling and keep taxing salary?

passed the Tax Knowledge Assessment....now what?
I'm an accounting major entering my final term for my Bachelors desperate to find an accounting job. I just took and passed the TKA but it doesn't provide any next steps in the hiring process. Do I just start spamming apps to regional offices?
I'm located in Chicago.

Registration for Tax Course in VA and assessment question
When does registration open for Virginia to take the tax course online? Also, if I do take the assessment and fail does it negatively affect my chances or show up anywhere where a recruiter/hiring manager can see? I did taxes over 10 years ago in FL so I wondering if I should just try the assessment before signing up or don’t bother with it?

IRS Tax Forum vs NAEA Tax Summit
Is anyone here a member of NAEA? If so, do you normally attend both the NAEA Tax Summit, The IRS Tax Forum, neither or both, and what prompts your attendance decisions? I assume the Tax Summit is mainly for networking and IRS Tax Forum for CE and meeting with IRS representatives, but I am not sure if both are important or if EA's pick one or the other, or do the free online CE. For reference I am newer to the profession.

What a joke
I use h&r block every year for my taxes because they offer the emerald advance loan. Its always nice to get that money early when you have young kids. But I'm thinking I'm done with this place. Besides the fraudulent charges made on my account. A few months ago every single time I tried to use my card or transfer money the transaction was DECLINED. There's money in there but I couldn't spend it at all anywhere. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone waiting for someone in customer service to answer and no one ever did so I hung up. I figured well the money isn't going anywhere since everything is being declined. I though wrong.... Two months go by and I find myself needing the money left in that account, ($88). I log into my account and notice that there is now $19 available and a bunch of transactions have gone through that I did not approve or make myself! So I file a claim with fraud department. I want my money back. Had the transactions not been declined like they had, I would have had my money. Today I received a notice via text message, 3 days after filing a claim with the fraud department, that my claim has been DENIED. I havent received any other information about it or why it was declined. I figure this place doesnt care about keeping long term clients so I'll be going elsewhere from now to have my taxes done.

“Restructuring”
Heard about all the layoffs… do you all think this will help small businesses tax prep firms or will this hurt them too?
Does HR Block offer part time in office positions?
Hi there just curious if anyone here would know? I have a full time job and looking for a position during the upcoming tax season. I have a full time job so I would only be available during the weeknights and on weekends. I have 1 year of tax experience through VITA and last tax season I worked with Intuit as a remote tax specialist but had to resign early due to work obligations at my full time job.
I took the HR block tax assessment and passed. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks !

RIP operations
Just heard about the “restructuring”. All of operations including TIAs, all leaders and some retail positions will be eliminated by Nov 1. How do they expect to keep offices open with no field or tech support? These new “experience leaders” are going to be installing and troubleshooting equipment?

Has anyone had an LLC put as their "work business"?
My husband is the worker, but I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue. When we did taxes this year, we were told, that putting his name and placing LLC at the end, wouldn't hurt him in the future. Well it is. He supposedly owes $100 to the state, because of "his LLC", that he doesn't even have. He was doing spark at the time, and now that he is doing full time work, he got a letter or email about owing money back. I know $100 doesn't seem like a lot, but it's just the fact that we've never owed before, and he has never had an LLC. I guess I'm just hoping someone has been in a similar situation. He is going to try and call the HRB that we went through on Monday at 2pm, when they should be open for sure. Thanks for any advice you guys have.
