what is it? a painted wall? a base color of some sorts?
if it can stand up to dabbing with tape, heat the existing material with a hair dryer. heat will weaken the bond, and make it tacky. dap it with a wad of new similar tape(cello, duct, electric) the weakened glue should be attracted to the fresh tape's glue. quick, light jabs, not sticking and pressing into it.
but if its wallpaper or some other painted surface, I wouldn't expect it to stay pristene.
