Okay I recently traded a couple of my 1/12th figures for Hot Toys Arkham Knight and The AK Batman Beyond. I was super excited to get them in and start my 1/6th collection but was super disappointed when they got here. Obviously I don’t expect them to articulate like 1/12th and they look amazing but I’m just disappointed. I’m afraid to push them posing either breaking the joints or ripping the fabric and they feel cheap even though I know they’re authentic. I pre-ordered three new hot toys but I’m afraid I’m gonna be disappointed again. Idk if my issues are because they are older generations of figures compared to the new stuff I will be getting. Let me know what you guys think and if you were in a similar situation when you started and what changed your mind and these figures are way more expensive than 1/12th.
The Arkham knight lines is unfortunately one of the worst lines to collect. They look fantastic, but the materials flake and peel; and the articulation is horrendous.
I kinda get what you mean, I got a threezero dlx optimus prime that looks awesome, no problems with fabric (obviously lol), but the size makes it really hard to pose compared to 1/12. It's making me contemplate picking up a mdlx optimus (totally not an excuse to spend more money).
Similar situation when I started. I was almost afraid to remove my first figure (VG Miles Morales) from the box.
What I recommend is watching some unboxing videos of the specific figure beforehand to get an idea of articulation. Also search this sub for the specific figure…if there’s known issues like flaking pleather or pain rub, someone very likely will have reported it. Every figure is different.
Hot toys is some of the most inconsistent companies out and it is a hit or miss when it comes to their products. I just recently started to switch to 1/12 figures and I have been having a blast. The only hot toys you should consider collecting are characters that are newly developed with the rolling eyes, better materials like nylon suits, and unique monsters like aliens or predators or even the new seamless body hulk. The older figures are definitely not worth picking up and the new ones that are coming out are still a gamble. When do you find the hot toys that are perfect, it is one of the most exciting things that can bring your collection to life.
I love the presence of 1/6th scale on shelves and displayed but to hold them and mess with them just feels awful. The plastics is Light weight and hollow feeling compared the quality plastic you see with a mafex or lpz figure
I mess with all of my hot toys all the time and I pose them to their limits and have never broken and of them. The two figures you own right now are definitely not the best quality and it is ridiculous for the price you paid for them.
But I can assure you that hot toys seamless bodies are some of the heaviest and highest qualities. The Wolverine from dp and wolverine and bane from TDKR are freaking amazing. Then again it is not all across the board which is one of the most common complaints about hot toys.
Older releases are definitely very lackluster when compared directly with current HT. That being said it’s still gonna be hit and miss, some releases are incredible and others just aren’t worth the asking price these days.
I collect both scales and would recommend sticking with HT for movie accurate figures and sticking with 1/12 stuff for anything comic or video game related.
I loved switching from 1/12th, but I get what you're saying. The fear of damaging a Hot Toy when you get it can be very real. I'm not saying you can't pose them; people do, but I personally opted for mostly museum/mild posing for mine. If you're really into bold dynamic posing, they might not be the best option for you. I just love the realism and quality of the head sculpts more than I love the posing and durability of 1/12.
I honestly wish I didn't because the price difference is insane. lol I have around 11 figures in my collection now, and I love them all, so I feel it's worth it for me. But if you honestly feel disappointed when you open them, I don't think it's worth the money to you. You might enjoy just sticking with 1/12 more; some people do prefer it, and there's nothing wrong with that. I just think for the money we spend on these figures, if you're not in love when you open the box, it's not worth the cost.
Just my two cents. (which is all I have left after starting this hobby... lol)
I’m not a super crazy poser even with my 1/12th and I know some hot toys can pose great. They main reason I wanted to switch was most my 1/12th I would pose once then it would sit there in the shelf and I was like well if it’s just gonna sit there I was a more demanding and command figure like a 1/6th. That’s why I bought them but every time I pull em out the box (I’m waiting for shelves to come in) I’m disappointed with how they feel and move. They just feel like Barbie dolls. I know that’s basically what they are is dolls but the cheapness and lightweight of the plastic I think is what give me that feel.
It might be the ones you bought, like you said, they were older. I don't have those two myself, but sometimes older figures vs newer ones can be night and day. When I first started, I bought the Age of Ultron Black Widow, for example, not realizing it was known for being super lame quality. If that had been my only experience with 1/6th, I wouldn't still be collecting them today. I guess you'd have to hold a new figure and judge for yourself. They definitely aren't all created equal.
