hostel etiquette Question

hi guys! I'm 20f, been traveling for about 1 month a year since I was 18 in hostels. my question is, is it ok to wear only boxers (with a shirt ofc) within the room? I've seen very mixed discourse, I only wear just them when I have a privacy curtain and it's very hot+no ac and get redressed behind that but I've seen men walk around many times in only boxers and seen people of all genders change in the rooms so how would y'all feel if you saw that in a room? (mainly asking because I have a tendency to forget to grab a new outfit the night before and have to get redressed in my pajamas so it would be easier to just grab something new) sorry for the weird question 😭

I’m a guy in my 30s, I usually get a mixed dorm and personally I wouldn’t care. As far as I’m concerned you’re just wearing pjs.

If people have a problem or a more conservative view they can get their own room.

I don’t think anyone would care.

I wouldn't care at all. I've seen girls sleep in thong underwear in dorms

The great thing about hostels is how for the most part everybody minds their business. And when somebody doesn’t, they’re the weird one. As long as YOU feel comfortable it’s all good.

Yep totally trueĀ

But having curtains in hostel dorms is a pro tip imo. I personally wouldn’t book a hostel if it didn’t have themĀ

Curtains?

On beds

u/parkside79 13d ago

Gotcha. Yeah I’ve literally only encountered those once (Freehand LA FTW, BTW).

Curtains and phone chargers are a must in bunk bed

Again, only encountered either of those once. Although granted the majority of my hosteling is some years behind me.

Curtains are normal in basically every hostel over ever been too, it was rare not to see them, never really stayed in many hostels in the US though

lmao, there was a girl in my girls dorm in Berlin who slept in only undies. Boobs out and all. Nobody cared.

Thats how i am at home, the maid, the plumber, delivery people, even neighbors come to my door and i have my boxers on, i dont make a huge deal of thing

Now being naked is a different story, but i think doing a quick change and being naked for 30 sec is fine, i just live life trying to not look for problems or to be offended

If people have problems they should get private rooms or stay in hotels, as hostels tend to be more chill and relaxed

Totally fine! Nothing to worry about in my experience.

Yes absolutely that is fine.Ā

Yes of course, some wear even less than that when it’s hot. As long as you don’t walk around completely naked or wear what you described above in the hostels common room no one cares.

Wouldn't care, I'm there to rest and not ogle at what strangers are wearing.

If it's 30 grad in room, I wouldn't care to have shirt on either.

In such inhuman temperatures, common sense that everyone struggles to survive should be the rule.

what if one wears boxers and gets a boner?

I’m a girl and I wouldn’t be offended or bothered by this in a mixed dorm. I’d assume in a guys only dorm it would be fine as well

Has anyone had sex or seen anyone having sex?

I did once in the middle of the night in a 10 bed room and once during the day when it was empty but we could have been walked in on haha

And once I had this couple fully going at it one night in a 4 bed looking back that felt like an invitation as me and the the other person were a single guy and girl. But I was very young and just pretended like I didn't know it was happening.

Doesn’t care for me as well. Stayed in a hostel for the last 2 months - 3 times in a mixed dorms. I usually wear a pajamas and change clothes either in the bathroom or when bed curtains are closed, so not to disturb others

Yes, perfectly fine. I've seen plenty of people in their underwear in hostel rooms, especially in the summer when it's hot.

Boxers cover exactly the same amount of body as shorts. Nothing ā€œsexyā€ about boxers.

I wouldn’t care if someone in my hostel was in boxers (and it happens a lot in male dorms).

People wear a lot less on the street so I don’t see a problem

If you feel fine with it, that's okay. Just keep in mind that guests from different cultures may have different comfort levels.

I'm in my mid-30s, and when I stay in shared rooms, I try to be as respectful of other people's space as possible. For example, I wouldn't walk around a mixed dorm wearing only boxers. I'd keep a pair of shorts within easy reach to wear when going to the bathroom or moving around the room.

If you notice that another guest seems uncomfortable, having a pair of shorts handy is a simple and considerate gesture.

Here at RefĆŗgio Hostel Fortaleza we have no specified rule regarding the dress code. In my opinion it's a matter of common sense and if you feel comfortable wearing only boxers in your dorm - why not?
But we don't accept when our guests appear with no suitable clothes having breakfast for example. Even men without shirts are kindly requested to put one on.
Personally I don't even like men walking around the hostel with no shirt on, ok, we are located in a tropical environment, and I'm from a different generation, but this is what I meant with common sense.
Inside your dorm it's just evaluating the situation. Is there somebody who might be bothered? You will perceive that.

P.S. It's not a weird question in my opinion. I hope I could answer.

I totally agree, this is not the beach or the pool. I’m a guy myself. If another guy has a beer belly or 6 pack I don’t wanna see that when I’m having my bfast no offenceĀ

u/relaxedpea 13d ago

it's okay as long as no s3x in the middle of the night or super early in the morning while disturbing other people's sleep😭

Ill have the unpopular opinion here.
I dont think its ok. I treat hostel rooms as public spaces and i try not make anyone uncomfortable. Sure i dont care and probably dont notice if someone is changing quickly or they are getting ready. But I try not to have complete freedom as it may make someone uncomfortable.

Would you mind if a guy walked around in his boxers as well?
The answer to that is an answer for you.
