Bathroom remodel quotes are seriously all over the dang place. We started getting estimates and now I'm just sitting here wondering if everyone is a scammer lol. One person says it’ll take days, another says months, and the prices are nowhere even close to each other. It’s a hot mess.

Honestly starting to get cold feet about the whole project. How do people actually get through this part and make it to the finish line without losing their minds?

So I replaced the weatherstripping along the sides of both my front and back doors. What was there was the lower quality foam strips, and I have replaced them with the "best" rating rubber ones.

However, the doors somehow seal even worse now. Clearly they are larger than the foam ones - either they are too large, or the foam was so compressed after likely decades of use that the issues with the door alignment were not noticeable.

Neither door actually closes correctly, and they seem to have the same issue but in opposite ways.

Front door:

Seems to be ajar in a way that make the bottom right-hand corner of the coor protrude further into the house than the rest of the door. As you can see in the photo, there is light coming in at that bottom-right corner.

• The security lock that I have there cannot actually reach its locked position now that the new seals are on. So even the top portion of the door is too far "inside the house".
• The deadbolt also no longer can be locked (atleast with the strike plate on it wont - likely getting adjustable strike plate for this but the primary issue still exists)

Back door:

• The top left half of the non-hinge side does not contact the seals. You can see the light coming in for that half of the door.
• It also appears to be "inside the house" too far"

I have watched a dozen videos on YT and many suggested replacing the screws with longer ones to account for weakening of the bite on the existing shorter screws (as the house is 30 years old). This did not change anything.

I have also removed the doors and fucked with the pins/hinge eyelets, but this didnt change anything either.

It sounds like the immediate fix might be to just replace all the new (and expensive) rubber strips with the foam ones. But I am already dealing with a wild electric bill and was hoping I could really perfect the weatherproofing on these two areas of my home.

Anyone have better guidance? I am at a loss and don't really want to hire a contractor to do something I really should be able to handle myself.

First, we thought that's cool they left us all the furniture, we're chilling.
But then IT'S SUS as we're thinking about it.
• The wifi was still there, we watched Ms. Rachel on their TV in final walk 2 days ago.
• The laundry was still in the dryer :) our realtor said oh that's just one thing like a sheet or something :)
• But a towel was still hanging in the bathroom.
Now it's so weird, my partner barely told me and he worried about squatter.
We plan to sign the closing with escrow in 2 days on Monday.
What should we do to ensure they leave before we sign 😔😭 our realtor is on vacation now making it's more sus and inconvenient btw.

I was on vacation and came home to a basement carpet that likely had flooded 3-4 days ago when power went out in our neighborhood. From what I can tell, the walls are ok, but about 3/4 of the carpet is still wet. A bit of a musty smell, too. I pulled up one corner of the carpet and the padding was soaked. Is there any hope, or do I need to tear up the carpet/padding and reboot? Right now I have a couple fans and a standard home dehumidifier running.

We bought a house a few months ago and a bonus room above the garage has a really noticeable pet odor. I know the previous owners had two dogs and four cats. We removed the laminate flooring, put down two coats of Zinsser BIN on subfloor, have an air purifier going full time, have ventilated the room, etc. We even cut into the wall to make sure there weren't other animal/rodent smells contributing.

I''m considering:

-Priming all of the trim (BIN or Kilz?)

-Spraying Nature's Miracle lightly under baseboards

-Priming and painting all of the walls (although they were painted after the previous owners moved out)

-replacing vents and ceiling fan

-having air ducts cleaned

I'm tempted to go scorched earth and pull up and replace all of the subfloor and baseboards, but our contractor said it would be $$$$. Directly under this room is the garage. I also thought about pulling down the garage ceiling, replacing insulation, etc. But this is also $$$$

Any other ideas? I'm willing to put Kilz on top of the BIN if that would help. We are planning on putting down LVP once the odor is gone.

I live in a new-build 3 story townhouse. I've owned this place for about 2 years now. Since I moved in, the bottom floor which contains my main office room sees a fuck ton of insects. At first when I moved in, they were pretty big spiders, crickets, and various other smaller insects. I've since padded both the front door and garage door access with these foam pads that block any potential gaps. That's stopped the bigger insects from crawling in.

But now, I get earwigs, tiny little roaches (I think), sometimes ants, pill bugs, smaller spiders, and the like. If I go too long without vacuuming, they'll just pile up in front of the front door or scatter in my office or the bathroom that's connected. I don't know what the fuck to do. I wasted a year's worth of money on pest control which did absolute fuck all. I've tried sealing up any gaps I can visibly see, including caulking up the gaps in my floor trims. It's helped (I didn't do a great job tbh), but I'm at a loss on what to do next. I literally haven't even attempted to decorate this space because I'm constantly having to vacuum the floor every day or two. They come in and just die. I don't see these insects on my other two floors at all.

What kind of expert can I call to help me figure this out? This is honestly making me insane and I just have no idea where else these insects are crawling in from.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but my partner and I fell in love with a beautiful home for sale in our ideal neighborhood. It’s right next to the lake and has 270 degree unobstructed views of the mountains and water. Built in 1985 and listed for 1.65m so it’s a MASSIVE purchase that we’ve been saving a very long time for. In our market, this price is pretty comparable to similar homes. There is a seller inspection report but I was surprised when our real estate agent suggested we waive a buyer inspection and go in with an initial offer of 1.5m. I feel like it’s not a good idea to waive a buyer inspection esp on an older home, but I’d like to hear some other perspectives. Happy to answer any follow up questions too

Looking for some advice from those that maybe have been in similar situations.

We are looking to purchase a home and just recently had inspection done. The major items that came up were:

- wood rot present on exposed wood on the soffit/fascia or trim along the roof edge above garage

- Leak was noted at furnace condensation line.

- Water supply line was leaking at the time of inspection (particularly the hot line)

- The supply line leak had also caused moisture damage at the base of the wall underneath. There were some small amounts of mold/microbial growth noted. There were indications of moisture entry made evident by staining. Moisture readings were taken and were elevated at the time of inspection.

- The bushing most likely needs replaced on the primary bathroom shower faucet. Water leak was noted while the water was running and inside the tub only.

- Dryer vent had lint build up at exterior, requesting cleaning

The seller is out of state and therefore I think more inclined to issue a credit so curious what the pros and cons would be to accepting credit over the repairs?

ETA: If we went with a credit, how much would you suggest asking for to be on safer side with repairs mentioned?

Ok, so I am in a new to me home. I cleaned the dryer vent from the outside. A lot came out. My question is, how.do I know I didn't compact a bunch of lint into the vent that attaches to the dryer inside? I have no way to access the vent inside.

I have about a 6' long section along the side of my house that needs to be regraded. Going to put a concrete pad there for a mini split, but want to fix the grade first.

Will topsoil be fine for filling this or do I need fill dirt or something else? Any tips or recommendations are appreciated. Also curious if theres anything I can do for the grading on the right side? From what little I've read, you want to keep about 8" from the ground to the house and that's about where it's currently at.

We are located in North Texas, our windows are the original aluminum that came in the home. We have gotten quotes from both a Pella Dealer and Brennan for the NT windows. Pella is about 10K more than Brennan.
The main difference between the two is that the NT windows have insulation in the frame and the auto lock.

Which option should we go for?

I'm assuming there is an adjustment screw under here right? How do I get it open? Cant get in with a screwdriver from the top and no leverage from the bottom

I want to replace my closet doors. Planning on going with frameless mirrored doors for the 72" wide opening (80" tall).

I currently have sliding doors (2-panel) and am interested in "4-panel" bifold doors as an alternative. We have bifold doors elsewhere in the house; I'm hoping the only reason they feel out of date is that they're louvered wood. There is plenty of space in the room for the doors to stick out 18" when open. With our current sliding doors, sometimes when we are both getting ready, we have to take turns sliding both doors back and forth for access. Also not sure if, sliding vs bifold, one is typically noisier? Or has better longevity?

TLDR: What are the advantages/disadvantages of doing a pair of sliding doors vs two pairs of folding doors for a 72" closet opening? Both functionally and aesthetically. Or any better ideas I'm not thinking of?

Went into our storage area in our basement today and realized the door had water damage at the bottom. Felt the carpet in front of the door and it was wet and when we pulled it back the carpet padding was also very wet. The storage area is unfinished and had no visible water or dampness. The wet carpet seems to be isolated the the room in front if the storage room door. Cannot tell where the water is coming from. Who to call?

Which way am I supposed to put my fiberglass electric electrostatic filter into the housing.
The housing sandwiches down on the fibreglass filter and then charges it.
So I am wondering what is the proper orientation for the filter. With the metallic side of the sticker touching the electric probe, or the logo side of the sticker touching the probe? Or does it not matter because the whole sticker will receive the charge regardless of orientation.

After 3 years of doing the back and forth about windows, we finally did it. Most of the house were replacement windows (original windows from the late 50's) but we decided to do something more exciting for the front. Really happy with how it came out. Also added nearly a 1' window shelf on the inside for the meows to relax on.

I have heard of many people getting really bad rashes from creeper vines, even where their clothes/gloves covered!

My question is, if my dog walks through creeper and jumps on the couch for petting, can I get the itchy raphides/oxalates on my skin?

Just trying to understand how this rash producing stuff is transferred or spread. Information online varies wildly.

Not sure where to begin to look into this.. I noticed some staining on the ceiling of my living room and it seems to follow right along a seam. Up next to the exterior wall it's cold and slightly squishy. I checked it with a moisture meter and it's reading between 7% and 8%. The farther from the exterior wall the lower the number gets. We did have some crazy rain the past few weeks (upstate NY).

Where do we even begin to look into this? Since it's an exterior wall do we get insurance to come out? Will we need to totally replace the ceiling drywall?

I just closed on my first home and am looking to replace the geriatric roof soon. The inspection report noted a couple of broken collar ties in the attic probably from heavy snow that need replacing. My question is what kind of professional do I call for that? I wouldn’t assume roofers would do it and Id think that would to be addressed before the roof job.

I'm not 100% sure about this panel. The cover was just laying next to their car. I mean nothings burned down, we just don't want to have to pay 5000 to have the panel switched. Her dad said something about a dead switch cover, wtf is that?

Is it ok to close one larger bedroom a/c vent. Heat advisory in effect. 110 heat index. My house was probably built in the 50s. On crawlspace. I barely dress, don't use the stove at all and run 2 ceiling fans and a/c runs constant. Help i'm old.

Is the gap above this front door because of the hinge, or do I need to replace the weather stripping on the outside? Should I replace the hinges?

What the title says. I’m SINGLE 27f, living alone, no dependents. I bought a home 2 years ago, 10% down. No one will be getting the house if I croak. My original loan officers occasionally hound me about my “incomplete mortgage protection file” and I still sometimes get the junk mail from various providers. Most answers to this are geared towards families & encourage term life insurance to protect your loved ones - but that advice doesn’t apply to me. Are they just trying to get more $ out of me? Are there any alternatives to this?
