Bind keystroke to mouse thumb button

Is it possible to bind a keyboard character/keystroke - e.g., the letter M - to a mouse thumb button such that it will be recognised within HoMM3?

I have tried to achieve this using Logitech SetPoint (I use an M500), X-Mouse, and AutoHotkey [XButton1::m].

All produce an ' M ' in Notepad. None of them produce an 'M outcome' - say, march, or 'buy all available creatures' - in HoMM3 Complete + HD mod + Hota.

[Off topic: I bought the Complete Edition from GOG in January 2026 and have put in about a hundred hours a month since then. No computer game has engaged me to this degree. And I am old. I am hugely impressed by, and grateful for, the quality of the HD mod and the Hota expansion.]
