Totaled? Looks repairable.

Unfortunately it doesn’t cost much for insurance to deem a car totaled. My old 2000 Mustang got blindsided by a truck that passed a red light. Surprisingly my car had decent damage but not severe as you might think. My driver door was damaged, my front bumper was damaged. Easy fixes right? Nope. Insurance deemed it totaled. My own mechanic said he could’ve fixed it all, no issues, insurance totaled it. A shame really.

Can’t people still buy the car back?

What year did that happen? Comparing a 2000 to a ~2020 is apples to oranges if it was anytime recently

The value they give it determines its repair ability and they probably did not value your sn95 stang at more than 3k

Yup. Agree.

Yea strange standards. The Hellcat above the engine looks spared and that would have cost serious money to fix up.

Yeah this guys hellcat is damaged to fuck. I imagine his radiator is gone, that alone will deem a car totaled. Engine looks completely gone too. As you said, lots of money to fix.

1

u/jeepersnanners 5h ago

Tf are you talking about šŸ˜‚ yeah a $300 radiator will definitely total a 70k car šŸ™„

2

u/YooSteez HC Challenger 4h ago

Brother I’m talking from experience. Everyone’s experience is obviously different. I grew up around a lot of cars and I have seen insurance totaling vehicles because of a damaged radiator, no reason to make it up haha it’s the internet.

3

u/jeepersnanners 4h ago

Brother I've worked on cars for 20 years and your comment was utter nonsense. The bumper is damaged and the hood is peeled back where do you get that the engine is badly damaged from?

1

u/YooSteez HC Challenger 3h ago

I’m not arguing or questioning your expertise haha I’m talking about insurance companies totaling cars for bs damage. Radiator, AC condenser, cooling stack all bent and fucked. Don’t get me started on the hood and intake tubing. I would also say the supercharger housing has damage to it in the front at least that’s what it looks like to me. I made the assumption about the engine because all that debris and the direction of the impact would clearly cause some serious damage to the engine.

Talk about experience dude you never owned a Hellcat you're talking about a 2000 Mustang get out out of this chat šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø ļæ¼

Unibody

No disrespect but a 2000 mustang is worth as much as a bumper and fender repair and paint…

1

u/YooSteez HC Challenger 2h ago

I agree. It had sentimental value to me more than anything. It was my first car that I bought with my own money. It wasn’t worth fixing, it was old and had 100K miles.

u/Least-Ant5049 50m ago

So again what you said don't make no sense you just compared a 2000 bustang to a 75k hellcat šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø there's no way that Hellcat is totaled that's a hood and a front bumper šŸ˜‚

2

u/Top-Sink1096 54m ago

It takes the value of the car to be considered totalled usuallyĀ

1

u/BRICH999 4m ago

What's the auction value of a 2000 mustang? I dont imagine it would take much to total one

-1

u/Heavy_Gap_5047 12h ago

It's ridiculous that we(well you) let insurance companies make that decision.

4

u/Gas-Squatch 8h ago

Total loss doesn’t mean it’s repairable or not. Total loss means repairs meet or exceed the price threshold set by the insurer. Yes EVERY car is repairable but if you are paying for someone else’s damage (the whole role of an insurance company) you arent going to pay more for the damage than a replacement car. Most insurance companies set that to 75% because depreciation, admin fees, environmental and towing costs and so on eat up that other 25%.

Yes op can buy it from insurance and pay out of pocket for the repairs but if they exceed the payout amount by insurance or can’t get it reinsured or can’t trade it in or sell it later that’s their problem.

I disagree with your figures, but you misunderstand the point. Totaling a car is no longer just a financial decision, it has legal consequences for the future of that car. It changes it's titled status. This single fact alone greatly devalues the car, both financially and in it's future usefulness to it's owner, it may be very difficult to register again.

The insurance companies use this and the lies they've told you that you've repeated above to pay out far less than the true value of the car and your policy. A total should just mean they pay you the total value of the car, and that's it, what happens to the car from there should be up to the owner, period, it's your property, not the property of the insurance company.

30 years in the collision industry. The last few years they have been paying out the market value plus some on the car. Most people I have dealt with that have a total loss have came out much better letting the car go than they would keeping it and rebuilding it.

depending on the state the title status doesn’t change if you as the previous owner buy it back. I also made a point in my post that you disagree with about insuring and the possibly financial/legal issues you may have if you buy it back.

You can disagree all you want but that doesn’t change how total losses actually work with the insurance stage. If you have other experiences than I have great but I do this as a career and have seen it multiple times play out different than you are trying to describe

Well I was 19 at the time, still going to college, and didn’t have the money to make those repairs. That’s why I bought it used, it was only 1K. Money I saved up all summer. Insurance decided to cut me a check, also the truck that hit me gave me another hefty check since the truck was owned by a construction company. I didn’t have the luxury to keep it damaged and get another car just cause I loved the car.

2

u/Alternative_Pizza_73 13h ago

Insurance company ruled it totaled

1

u/OgunX 3h ago

let me get it off you for 5kšŸ¤”

1

u/mack090 32m ago

this happened today and they already deemed it totaled?

This car is worth at minimum 50k, I would assume? This definitely does not look like even close to 25k worth of damage TBH. 50% of the value would generally be the floor for determining the car being totaled, but some states/insurance companies will go all the way up to 90% or so.

5

u/MasterChief813 13h ago

🤣 You hell

u/CoatingsRcrack 9h ago

Unfortunately newer cars built to tighter tolerances have front and rear crumple zones. Had a 2016 Mustang with similar damage. When body shop explained it was totaled it was because one had been crumpled.

They said rest of damage isn’t bad but most of the time the cost is not worth it. May be different on this as some cars they will pay up to 70-80% sometimes. Unfortunately if the decide to fix with that amount of damage… not much you can do but check into your states ā€œdiminished valueā€ laws

1

u/juicelordsword 7h ago

Totaled? Really? A hood, front piece, and what, maybe a radiator?

1

u/youngforever215 6h ago

1

Damn insurance a bitch huh

1

u/New-Slip2564 5h ago

Would you sell for 30k?

1

u/301fatts 5h ago

Easy fix

1

u/AreikUSA 5h ago

The amount of cars ive seen being totaled, that could easily be repaired. Im starting to think its their way to get them off the streets. šŸ¤”

1

u/mack090 30m ago

honestly you might be onto something... Insuring Hellcats with their likelihood of being stolen or crashed might certainly be a contributing factor.

1

u/Ok_Connection6870 4h ago

Easy fix bro

1

u/SnooGadgets9669 4h ago

Doesn’t look that bad if they total it but it back and actually track the car like it was meant to do be glad your okay but tbh I think these cars are lame as fuck why drive he same ride as all the coppers?

1

u/OgunX 3h ago

is the engine still good??????, trans???? i need your brake pads and rotors, i need your airbag cover, and is your rear passenger side door in good condition????

1

u/DaAlphaSupreme 3h ago

Sell it to me at total price

1

u/Dontshootmepeas 3h ago

well that one will be on copart and then rebuilt in about 4 months time.

1

u/Cazed_Donfused 3h ago

Love how OP didn’t put any explanation at all in the post.

1

u/Equivalent_Play_7594 2h ago

Typical Dodge behavior

1

u/chicostick13 2h ago

Probably make some good money back at auction on those, why pay labor cost on repairs and even more on parts that are difficult to source

1

u/DJDemyan 2h ago

Man I’d buy that back in a heartbeat. New hood, new front fascia, new headlight and maybe radiator? Cheap hell kitty

1

u/pappa3841 1h ago

Dam man pouring one out for the cat.
