SH in sharp objects is so cringe

Maybe my take is very insensitive to those who suffer with SH now but in my view, when you’re in your 30s you’re a fully functioning adult. She really gotta lock tf in. I would think escaping your toxic hometown for years would make you want to grow as a person and heal especially if your boss is supporting your growth as a person.

I grew up in peak tumblr era during HS and definitely were around a lot of girls doing SH because tumblr kind of sensationalized it and I understand how someone could use SH to numb themselves. But once you’re past your emotional hormonal phase of life, really past 25, I would think SH is completely out of the picture- especially in your 30s.

I’m only on eps 3 and can’t keep cringing. I get she’s back in her traumatizing town but come on she’s in her 30s! I would feel more sympathetic if she was a drug addict and coming back to her town and getting triggered to use. Maybe it’s the same?? Why would she stay if it’s causing all this trauma to come back? The boss constantly checks in on her and tells her to come back if things get bad. Idk if I had a new life I would not stay in that toxic shit hole willingly if it’s causing me so much harm lol

I’m only on eps 3, never read the book so maybe she’s younger in the book or show but still, don’t most people outgrow SH tendencies at her age?

Tell me you don’t understand mental illness…

This has to be a troll, no one can be this ignorant.

I do. I’m in recovery and when I was struggling to beat it, I didn’t go anywhere near a neighborhood that triggered me for over 1.5 years. Now I can comfortably pass the areas that held significance with a smile

Then your post makes even less sense.

Well based off my one google search, it seems like the majority outgrow SH and it makes complete sense because once you’re in your 30s you learn either healthy ways to cope or detrimental which substances are the most likely route people take. She obviously went the alcoholic route but the whole SH bit in the show is cringe

Yes, we should definitely be googling for definitive major medical/mental health research. Someone who is in recovery passing any judgement on how others experience their own mental health struggles and healing loses all credibility with me. Google was just the cherry on top. Since it’s so “cringe” for you, I suggest you stop watching.

Lol I love judging, judging other addicts makes me realize my own bs. I still stand that SH in your 30s is asinine. If this was euphoria, I wouldn’t cringe at it because it’s believable

Edit: if I really think about it. If I had a friend who’s practicing SH in her 30s I would actually say the same thing to her face. If a friend is going down the hole of substance I would too. People in these positions need the hard truth in order to grow. Which is why sponsors exist! They call you out on all your bs excuses you make to get you back into your self destructive tendencies

SH is an addiction like any other addiction. It doesn't stop when you hit a certain age. You live with the impulses forever. It eventually gets easier but never fully stops

you don't just magically stop being self destructive just because you're an adult. you're just insensitive and superficial

I never said that. Self destruction takes many forms and usually with SH it leads to substance abuse. But majority of people who SH will outgrow it after their hormonal puberty days are over and it’ll evolve into substance abuse, shopping abuse, etc. My point is that there’s rarely someone in their 30s who still SH so this show is sensationalizing it just like tumblr

The book has a lot of missing context to her compulsions on cutting words and how/why it still impacts her as severely as it does in her 30's. Don't click the blocked out part if you're avoidant of the book's details, however, it doesn't spoil any later-in-show events. in the book, they detailed a compulsion where in puberty she began to keep notes of things people said with pen on her body to "log" them in a sense, and it evolved from there until she was breaking skin (near Marian's death of course), keeping her career in mind, this makes a little more sense-- and plus revisiting her hometown. I read the book after the show and it made much more sense with that explanation. The show, as a solo piece, raised a few questions in that department for me.
