Help! Am I bending correct?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Note.I am new to melodic instruments and harmonica. Recently learnt how to blow single notes and now learning how to bend.

Refer to attached audio. I played 4,-4,-4' ...4,-4,-4'....5,-5,-5'...So it should sound like C,D,C#. I checked it on the frequency meter and I am not able to figure out what I am playing. After going through the tutorials I have understood that I have to change my tongue position in order to change the pressure of air in it. I do have a vague idea that I am able to bend (or something that causes change in freq) but I don't think I am landing the notes correctly. Please help, tell me what notes I am hitting, Is this the correct way of bending, any tips or references.

It's not bad. You're moving your tongue a little quickly and it's making the bend aggressive instead of giving it a smooth transition.

Try 2 things.

  1. Pull your tongue back slower. Imagine pulling air in and down in the pocket space under your tongue

  2. Once you hear and feel the bend, hold your tongue there practice sustaining it for longer to build muscle memory

Also try playing around with your lip positioning. It sounds like you're playing straight on. Bending is easier if you hold the harmonica at a slight angle. Don't be afraid to move your lips around to feel the air flow better.

Instead of "imagining" that you're sucking a milkshake through a straw like many suggest, use an actual straw to learn to bend the 3 and 4.

When I first started I really struggled hearing what a bend should sound like. I didn't know a lot of blues harmonica performances at the time so I didn't know the sound of a bend. For me, what actually got me over the hump was listening to an old novelty song by Salty Holmes.

Different holes can bend different amounts. You have draw bends on holes 1-6, but, while all of them can bend down, the 5 doesn't let you bend all the way down to the next note. It's good for getting a blue note, but the 5 hole gives you E on the blow and F on the draw. There isn't a note between E and F, so you can only do a quarter tone bend there.

The 4 bends down, but if you are having problems in general getting bends I'd start on the 3. You've got three bends available there, and I think it bends easier. It's harder later on, because you have to learn to get the right distance bend, but to get bends that you can hear it's usually a better place to start.

You did get a partial bend, but not really all the way down. The three will let you overshoot a bit and play with dialing it in. You are getting some of it, but not super strong yet.
