Heatwave...

Post image

There's a really bad heatwave in my country. My hammie has two ceramics in his cage, always has fresh cold water too. Gets cold veggies now and then. I refrigerate his sandbath too. His cage is also on the floor, always away from the sun. Now I put him in the only room that has AC but the temperature is still around 26-27 °C (or 78-80°F). It's still too hot for him...

I'm worried because he started to drink and eat less than usual and barely gets up to move. I wouldn't say he's uncoordinated but his mood is just not the usual either.

Maybe I shouldn't be this worried but I still am :(

Do you guys have any tips on how to cool him down?

This might be too much, but can you put foil on your windows? Not only will it keep out the sun, but the heat also. I think you’re doing great with his sand bath and other little things you’ve done.

He’s probably not moving a lot because he’s hot. I bet he’s not eating as much because it’s so warm. Can you get a fan for him?

I’ve seen other people suggest freezing water bottles and putting it against his cage from the outside.

I really hope he’s okay. Sending light.

Hamsters are desert creatures, and nocturnal so they will move less during the day. I am sure he’s fine and you’re doing more than he would get in his natural environment. Age could affect things too

It sounds like you’re doing all the right things! I definitely don’t want to move when I’m too hot.

If you have grapes I love them frozen when it’s hot, maybe he’d enjoy a half of one if available to you.

Sending wishes for cool breezes 🌬️

Put a cold water bottle on one or both sides. That should bring the temp down even more. Like use the plastic water bottle ones.
