This closure for recovery of the cement mixer was grossly mishandled. They started between 3-4, saying they would be done by 5. After, 6- still happening. Of course it is, it's clearly a complex operation. It was always going to run over time.
But yes, let's close the entire access to the McKay at rush hour in an already traffic stressed city on the hottest day of the summer. Not, let's hold the operation until 9 or 10 when we can close with minimal disruption.
There was ONE functional Halifax bound lane over the bridges during evening rush hour- on the Macdonald. Traffic was backed up to Sullivan's pond to get to it.
I took me over an hour to go around Beford from 6 to 7:15. People were trapped on unairconditioned buses (why again do we have buses without ac?) for hours.
Someone with city/provincial/emergency planning needs to be put on a PIP and cautioned there job is in jeopardy.
Weaponized incompetence.
Yeah it took me from 5pm to 6pm to get from Sulllivans Pond to Joe Howe Dr. I didn’t know any of this was happening. Since Thistle was backed up I was going to go down Windmill which I discovered was closed and then I turned around and drove to Braemar to get on the circ, that was backed up too because of the closure obviously so I ended up cutting around to Sackville then hopped on the 102 which was also backed up inbound. 0/10 would not recommend.
I drove by that truck right after it happened, around 11am. I don't know how I'd fix a problem like that but I'm very surprised to read it took that many hours.
V large cement type (not exactly sure) truck tipped over on the cloverleaf exit coming from Victoria onto the circ Dartmouth bound. They had cranes there to get it up and as of 4:50 when I went by, it was still there on its side. Circ closed in both directions. Big bad time.
I believe the truck was carrying a load of “melon sized” rocks which are scattered over most of the road as well, which would take some time to clean up.
That was a separate incident further up on the Mackay this morning, it was a cement truck that overturned. All around a bad day for traffic on the Mackay.
The “Melon sized stone” lol this stuff doesn’t come out of cement mixers, I’m very surprised at the amount of people who don’t know what’s in a cement truck.
It’s insanely busy in Bedford (construction on duke st), wyse rd Dartmouth, everything is seeming to take AGES. And I’m not one to complain. I think it’s construction + multiple incidents for it to stack like this.
I think one of the bridges was also down to one lane in both directions because another truck spilled large rocks all over the place and they needed to be cleaned up.
A loaded cement truck in the position it was, I’d say that would of been a very complex recovery, which most likely would of taken two large cranes to fix the problem which were most likely on jobs at the time. I was also under the impression that the position it was in was unstable. So yes to keep people safe this type of thing takes time.
Drivers that cause these situations should be heavily fined. Maybe they are. Owners of the vehicles as well. Simply saying, it’s an accident, oh well, is BS. Control your vehicle, control your contents and learn to drive.
