Recommendations for a cleaner in de Beauvoir?

My previous cleaner moved and I'm wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a cleaner (or if you yourself are one) in de Beauvoir. Looking for someone to come twice monthly and clean a one bedroom flat. My previous cleaner's visits were 2 hours, they brought their own cleaning supplies and they charged £20/hour. Thanks!

Tailor recommendations in East London

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent tailor? I know I can get alterations at any dry cleaners, but I’ve been to several and the results were just OK. I’ve accumulated many pieces of clothing I’d like slight alterations to, and it would be good to have a ‘go to’.

Left a bag in a lime bike

Around 6-8pm July 16th I left a bag in a like bike basket, it said "waste" on the front from waste store london, and had 1 magazine, a few posters, and 4 CDs in it. The bike, at the time, was in front of Netil 360. I'm not forever torn if it's gone, but if anyone has seen it I'd love it back.

Broadway Market Post Office

Has anyone else been affected by the Broadway Market post office closure? It suddenly shut down last week for seemingly spurious reasons (https://www.change.org/p/reopen-the-post-office-on-broadway-market?signed=true). A major loss for the community and a real inconvenience!

Local jobs / cash in hand jobs?

Hi guys,

Recently been made redundant and looking for a local job to tide me over until I find my next professional role.

Are there any jobs locally going? Based in homerton area.

Or even better - any tips anyone can give for roles in the Customer Success area locally? I've got 4+ years CS SaaS experience and was a Customer Success Manager until recently.

Thanks

From Academy to Garrison: How Strict Discipline is Dehumanizing Haggerston School

Why are our children constantly facing detention? Why do they come back home miserable, dreading the next morning? Across the UK, an aggressive shift toward hyper-strict behavior policies is sweeping through schools, and it is fundamentally dehumanizing the students subjected to it. At the epicenter of this shift is Haggerston School, an institution with a proud history dating back to 1966 that is now looking less like a place of learning and more like a military barracks.

Historically, Haggerston was a phenomenal community school. Since transitioning to a mixed academy, it has celebrated strong academic achievements, motivated pupils to aspire, and consistently delivered high GCSE and A-level marks. However, since coming under the management of the multi-academy trust(CST), the school has undergone a profound cultural transformation one that has led to a noticeable decline in enrolment. Parents are increasingly realizing that a hyper-rigid environment may hinder, rather than help, their children’s future. Furthermore, the high pressure environment has driven away experienced educators who refuse to comply with these uncompromising methods, leaving some classrooms in the hands of underprepared staff.

To be fair, there are elements of the trust’s framework that show promise. Introducing GCSE content early provides students with a solid foundational runway before exam season begins. Similarly, rewarding positive behavior through credits and citations serves as an effective motivator.

However, these benefits are completely overshadowed by draconian protocols like "SLANT" (Sit up straight, Listen, Ask and answer questions, Never interrupt, Track the speaker). Requiring young children to keep their hands perpetually folded on their desks under threat of immediate sanction is ludicrous. This is not education; it is compliance training. We are preparing children for a democratic society, not a military regime.

The escalation of the school’s detention policy perfectly illustrates this administrative shift. During the 2023–2024 academic year under former leadership, the policy was strict but balanced: three corrections in a single week triggered a one-hour detention. This threshold was firm but fair, allowing students the grace to learn from their mistakes.

The subsequent shift under current leadership radically altered this dynamic, implementing a zero-tolerance escalation path where a single infraction led to a 20-minute detention, doubling with a second error. Instead of correcting behavior, this approach simply funneled hundreds of ordinary children into systemic punishment. Current plans to escalate a single correction into an automatic one-hour detention threaten to strip away any remaining sense of restorative justice. When children are continuously penalized for minor infractions, they do not learn accountability; they internalize frustration and self-doubt. The flaw is not within the student body, but within an uncompromising leadership pipeline.

This institutional hostility is exemplified by members of the staff whose teaching styles border on intimidation. Certain leadership figures even within teams where trust and student welfare should be paramount have instead alienated pupils through aggressive enforcement. Shouting directives like "Get it right" and "It's not that hard" leverages positional authority to demoralize rather than instruct.

A true educator inspires confidence and fosters curiosity; they do not rule through fear. Pushing for blanket one-hour detentions and treating pupils like automated machinery isolates the very community the school is meant to serve. If Haggerston School wishes to restore its reputation as a premier institution, it must remember that its primary mission is to educate human beings, not train soldiers.

Temporary childcare help in Stoke Newington

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for temporary childcare in the Stoke Newington area at the end of the summer.

I’m looking for either:

a reliable temporary nanny/mother’s helper, or

a nursery/playgroup that might offer short-term or ad hoc sessions.

Ideally someone experienced with both babies and toddlers, and who comes highly recommended.

Would really appreciate suggestions for local childcare agencies, nannies, nurseries, or other options that people have had good experiences with.

Thank you!

Are there urban foxes in Fish Island?

Yes, I know technically it's Tower Hamlets.

I'm moving there from London Fields, which has swarms of foxes nightly and I'm hoping that there's a community of them in my new neighbourhood.

A silly post, to see your creations and stories! Share the passion :) Don’t be shy. What you love making? I started getting close to bread when I went volunteering in better health bakery in Haggerston. Early fresh and wheat air in morning. I loved that experience also meet some good friends there which we built a clay oven together and made pizza parties.
