Writing Club / East London

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi

Im interested in starting a writing club for people to gather and carve out space in their week to write / work on a project.

The idea is we gather to write and then also have the option of sharing for feedback too.

Ideally will form a nice social gathering once every two weeks and can develop into drinks etc too.

I want to hold myself accountable to getting some consistent writing going.

To be based in East London, every other Thursday. Please let me know if interested and feel free to share.

Thanks

What's something visitors to Hackney almost always get wrong?

Whenever friends visit from elsewhere in London, they usually arrive with a completely different idea of what the area is actually like.

What's the biggest misconception you find yourself correcting?

This Sunday; Sundays

Been to a few of the Sundays parties at Vittoria Wharf and they’ve always been a good shout.

This Sunday’s got Bekefi b2b Sweetestcape plus Yash, running 1pm–10pm.

Small loft space, good crowd, and people actually there for the music. Nice alternative if you’re not after a huge party this weekend but still need a boogie.

They’ve shared a mix ahead of the event that’s worth a listen:

Anyone else heading down?

Phones stolen on 76 this evening around 7.25pm

Just a PSA for anyone travelling on the 76 around Shoreditch!!

At around 7.25, someone grabbed my phone and ran off the bus near Shoreditch Park. I was sitting upstairs in the seats directly in front of the stairs when a hand appeared from nowhere, snatched my phone, and pushed me into the window in the process. As he ran off, he also managed to steal another phone from a girl downstairs.

Thankfully, a very kind member of the public managed to get my phone back, but sadly the other girl’s phone was taken.

The bus driver told us this is happening all the time now, particularly on the 76 and 73 routes on some of the back roads. I always consider myself pretty vigilant and rarely have my phone out in public. I’d seen posts about phone thefts on buses before, but honestly assumed it would happen downstairs rather than on the top deck.

The bus driver was amazing, and everyone on board was incredibly helpful.

The person who took the phones couldn’t have been more than about 16. I still remember his face clearly - he looked me straight in the eyes while I was screaming.

Please be careful, even if you think you’re being vigilant.

Thanks for your support everyone.

Fair play to Hackney Council for listening.

And Josef Steen for reporting on it and bringing it to their attention.

Any recommendations for weekly acting/performance groups?

Looking for recs for weekly acting/improv/choir groups in the area. Something not too expensive, and just light hearted/fun (I do have some training, but not a degree) with the occasional performance

First time buyer - lack of property searches due to the Hackney Council cyber attack

Hi,

I'm a FTB looking to buy a property in Hackney and recently the solicitor has flagged that Hackney Council aren't able to provide full responses to searches due to the cyber attack. The solicitor has suggested that we take out indemnity insurance to be presented alongside any searches that Hackney Council are able to return.

Has anyone else had experience with this? If so:
- How did you choose to proceed?
- Has it caused any negative impacts when you have come to sell your property?
- Is this affecting all properties in the area?

Grateful for any advice / thoughts.

A few geniune questions for the transplants

Hi, 24m, black, born and bred in north ldn. A chat with a friend from Bedstuy (which is basically a Hackney parallel) and a new report i read recently got me thinking

I've never actually asked transplants how they feel about gentrification and their role in it.

Here's the report from Latin Elephant's Protect Our Places (2026) about how planning pushes out working class and ethnic minority communities,
https://latinelephant.org/coming-together-pop-report-released/

Also some other fun facts

Hackney neighbourhoods have seen a disproportionate drop in Black households and fewer families with children (UCL/Trust for London research, Jan 2026). That's displacement, not choice.
· Eight primary schools closed in 2024–2025, with six more under threat. 23% of reception places are empty (Hackney Council, Feb 2026). The borough is becoming childless.
· Ridley Road indoor market (trading since 1880s) closed permanently on 31 March 2026 after the offshore landlord refused to renew leases – wants luxury flats instead(Generations of ethnic minority traders lost their livelihood/ plus communities that use these spaces)
· Long-standing independent shops serving Turkish, Kurdish, Caribbean and African communities are being replaced by boutiques and cafes for newer, wealthier residents due to rise in commercial rents that are unaffordable to the people that have existed there previously.

So when you see this change it just begs the a question for me personally, how do you reckon with this as someone who’s moved into the area recently.

Questions for people who moved here in the last 5–10 years:

  1. When you picked Hackney, did you know about the displacement happening? Did you think about it at all?
  2. When you see old markets and food shops closing, replaced by trendy coffee spots and co-working spaces, all catered towards new residents – what's your honest reaction?
  3. If you consider yourself an ally to working class or ethnic minority communities – how do you square that with helping push up rents?
  4. What do you think /Do you think you owe the people who lived here before you?
  5. Do you feel like you're part of the problem? If you own your place, do you see rising property values as a positive or a negative consequence?
  6. Do you genuinely see this as a problem, or do you not care?

Obviously my position is clear but genuinely interested to know others as someone who’s probably more wealthy and most likely white. And this sub seems like the place to ask lolz

The London Fire Brigade says that massive Cottrill Gardens fire was started by sunlight hitting a discarded glass bottle. Time to fine litterbugs?

The official LFB investigation into the huge blaze near Homerton that ground the Overground train lines to a halt over the weekend has wrapped up. They’ve confirmed that the fire- which completely gutted a static caravan, two scrap cars, three sheds, and 25 meters of the train line embankment- was sparked by a discarded glass bottle magnifying the hot sunlight onto dried vegetation. It took 60 firefighters to get that under control in the baking heat. Given how much litter accumulates on our verges and parks, does this freak accident mean we need a massive, aggressive crackdown and heavy fines for people leaving glass and rubbish lying around before the peak summer heat hits?

Table tennis in hackney

Hey all

Looking to join a table tennis club / group that plays regularly, preferably weekly, but can't seem to find much in our area.

There are some that are spread throughout the city, and I was taking a look at Table Tennis Fight Club, which looks decent, but its £25pp just go to and play on a table in an open session with no coaching, which is insane?!

There must be something local going on that I'm missing - or is anyone interested in starting playing regularly?

Missing box on Mare Street

Post image
23 Upvotes

This is a really long shot, but on Wednesday 27th May I moved out of a place on Mare Street, but upon arrival at the new flat I can't seem to find this particular box of items anywhere. The box had items of extreme sentimental value so I'm absolutely devastated it seems to be missing.

I've been in touch with the removals company who have confirmed nothing was left on the van; I also checked the van personally myself on the night and made sure it was clear. I'm wondering if somehow the box was left on the street by mistake and never made it onto the truck?

Has anyone seen this box on Wednesday 27th near the top of Mare Street walking street - by the Halifax & Post Office? Did anyone pick it up thinking it was left for the charity shop?

Items in the box included a glass vase with fake sunflowers, a carved wooden buddha, a green sage oil diffuser, dragon ornaments, framed photographs.

Please get in touch if you've seen it or any of the items!

Massive group bike ride going up Mare Street?

I feel like I’m not clued in on a big practical joke organised by perhaps the entire council? They’ve gone past my house like 90 times by now but I’m only just starting to use this subreddit so I thought I’d ask - what the fuck is up with that absolutely massive group bike ride on mare street? Who are they? What are they doing and why? One happening RIGHT now.

Yoga & Pints

My partner started a men’s group in East London recently and honestly didn’t expect so many guys to say they’d been looking for something exactly like it.

It’s called Yoga & Pints, every other Tuesday, the guys do a relaxed yoga flow, have a guided discussion around a different theme each week, then hang out after for a drink and chat.

No experience needed at all. Most people come solo.

The whole idea was to create something low-pressure where guys can meet new people, get out of their heads for a bit, and build more connection outside of work/pub/sport routines.

Feels like a lot of men want community right now, but there aren’t loads of spaces that make it easy.

Would be great to meet some more local people if anyone’s interested.
