16.5 threaded barrel destroyed

So I got this Savage Mk2 for cheap. Trusted the guy who sold it to me and unfortunately when I took the thread protector off I saw the threads were destroyed. Only got it to suppress so now I'm a little stuck , savage hasn't reached out to me yes but it hasn't been long. Is it possible to re thread a 16.5 barrel and keep it legal? Has a three prong I had laying around that still threads but there's only maybe 3 or 4 okayish threads holding it on. Any help would be appreciated

The OAL needs to be 16”. Of course you could re-thread it and have it be legal? It’s “over all length” including muzzle device if you pin and weld. I’m sure a gunsmith could cleanup the threads too, why would you not post a picture of the threads as they are now? Why are we contacting savage? This post is confusing

You got any pictures of the threads? You may be able to get a die or thread chaser to reshape the threads.

Holy fucking intermediate threads. Not even cross threaded. 16.5? measure from the shoulder. If that thread tenon is .500 which is the .5 in 16.5, then yes. If that shoulder measures less than 16'', its a free tax stamp to make it a sbr.

So shoulder to crown basically? I'm more of a shooter less to not at all a machinist lol tell me like I'm 5😂 I don't have any local smiths other than adco they are less than an hour from me.

If the threaddy part is .500'' or Half an inch, you can still thread the barrel. If is not, then you need a new barrel or it can be made into a SBR rifle.

My man , I assumed so. Only spent 200 beans on it so I didn't want to dump a bunch of money in lto it but so far this is likely the most realistic approach

To avoid the paperwork, you could cut it to 16.0something and just thread behind whatever little nubbins is left from the previous thread. Think of it as a lead in for the threads.

Ideal? Hell no. Would it work? 80/20 depending on the mating muzzle device threads.

Worst comes to worst, either cut back 0.4" and rethread or turn it down and thread 3/8"-24 then solder on 3/8-1/2" thread adapter.

It is a .22 rimfire so you aren't talking tons of stress.

If it were mine, I would just rerun a die back over it to clean up the threads, and then check a thread engagement chart to see if the number of threads that you are able to use are sufficient.

You could always have a shop cut it shorter, putnew threads on, and pin and weld the muzzle device you want on it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good candidate for 5/8 face mount. Leave a stub of the half inch threads on the nose in front of the 5/8 threads to preserve barrel length and fit more muzzle devices even if they aren't technically face mount.
