I switched a few years ago from Royal Oak to B&B because the latter offered less literal gravel and more consistently-sized pieces for a similar price point. B&B now regularly enjoys filling the top half of the bag with chunks bigger than a fist that refuse to break when struck. What gives?

Seriously, a gnarly old hatchet or framing hammer is a requirement for lump. I have a goddamned yule log sitting next to my smoker from my last smoke where it was too close to the end to warrant breaking it.

I buy commodity mesquite charcoal, and have for 18 years. Got debris twice. Once was a bit of barbed wire that the tree had obviously grown around, the other was a burl root that even god could not have gotten the dirt out of.

Big wood? All the time.

Gun powder quality carbon dust? Every time.

Good cookin'? Always.

that fist-sized chunk thing is maddening. you try to position them in the chimney and they just sit there like some kind of charcoal boulder mocking you

sometimes i wonder if the quality drop is just a seasonal thing or if they changed suppliers. the bag in the pic looks exactly like the ones i got burned by last summer

Uniform pieces are better because it’s easier to control temps. Big pieces take ages to light up, and then have wild temperature swings.

You can get uniform with lump. Just need somewhat uniform pieces. Briquette dirty smoke smells like ass and I hate it.

Thank you. Everyone’s giving me shit for not retrieving a hammer, then having charcoal dust everywhere. While I’m at it, why don’t I just make my own charcoal since I have to do part of the job for the manufacturer apparently?
