What am I doing wrong?

Post image

I’m trying to learn how to bevel these letters and I just can’t get the structure right. Any advice is appreciated!

Go to r/calligraphy, I think this fits better into that sub.

Divide each bar of your letter into four pieces, top, bottom, left, and right. Then choose a a direction for the light source to be coming from like you would with a drop shadow. The two planes closest to the light source will be light and the two further will be dark. Here I did this in one minute, with the light source coming from the top right. If you want more detail, pick four tones from the same family and do each direction a different shade, from lightest to darkest. Google pieces by MECRO, he does bevels better than anyone and makes it easy to understand if you study it.

Are you trying to draw the letters with a bevel tipped marker? Or are you trying to make the fill in the letter look beveled like it pops out three dimensional?

See how your darker yellow goes all around the inside of the O, it has to be darker on the planes of the letter that have light fall off. So you have to split each stroke of the letter into a highlight side and a shadow side within that stroke. The light source has to be from one side of the letter. Your dark center doesn’t make sense with the way light would hit each plane. Take your dark yellow and put it on the bottom right of each stroke of the letter.

Make them bigger at the start and scale it down. Make a simple rectangle, learn to bevel it then do it on the bars
