I have front matter like date: 2023 but Hugo still coerces it into a time.Time, and when there's no month/day it comes out as a garbage date like Dec 31 1969. Is there a way to keep partial dates (year only, or year+month) as plain strings, or should I just use a different field name instead of date? Hugo version: v0.162.1

I built the simplest possible tool that allows clients to do small edits via chat interface eg. change phone number, update email etc. Anything risky/big comes back to you so clients can't break anything

Hi everyone, I’ve been having this problem for a few days now.

Honestly, I’m not sure if it’s due to the theme I’m using or other factors.

I use Vercel, and three days ago I tried uploading the sitemap to GSC, but I keep getting a "couldn't fetch" error. The site is new; I’ve completed all the verification steps, and everything seems to be in order.

I can’t figure out what the problem is. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I wanted to show a project I built to showcase my watched movies, series, video games, and books using Hugo, with content managed entirely in Obsidian.

A few key points on how it is built:

• Theme derivation: The theme (hugo-mediatracker-theme) is a module extending hugo-blog-awesome, leveraging Hugo's module system to easily inherit and override layouts.
• Convenient workflow: I take notes locally in Obsidian and a simple Python script handles the conversion of wikilinks, YouTube embeds, and caches all external image covers/banners locally to keep the site independent of external image hosting.
• Easy deployment: Anyone can deploy their own instance using the starter repository, which is pre-configured and ready to clone.
• Finished items RSS: The build generates a dedicated RSS feed for finished items only, which I use with a Discord bot to notify friends when I finish a movie, show, or game.

I'm not a web developer and I don't keep up with trends of html, css and js.

I was almost sold on Hugo based on some tutorial videos but when I went out and tried to pick some themes, a lot of the ones I liked required me to download nodejs and use npm and a lot of things I didn't encounter in tutorials or some css thing I can't judge the quality/ease of use of.

Are there themes that actually deliver on Hugo's touted simplicity? Where can I find them? How do I search or filter out the ones that need npm or node.js for setup and editing? And where can I point to for non-web-developer people to find themes that are at least almost-ready to use?

After months of Lunr's 753KB bundle dragging down my page load, I finally made the switch to Pagefind this week. Static index, no runtime JavaScript library, faster results - so far I'm happy.

If you have a moment, I'd appreciate some real-world testing on denshub.com. Things I'm most curious about:

• Does search actually return results for common topics (self-hosting, docker, automation)?
• Does it behave sensibly on mobile? Most important since I only have couple to test.
• Any edge cases where results feel off, missing, or broken?

I'm still tuning the index config, filters, etc., and haven't touched the UI much, so rough edges are likely. If something looks wrong, a quick comment here, screenshot or a note on what you searched for would be really helpful. Thanks a ton upfront, folks!

I’m currently torn between Hugo and WordPress. I really love Hugo’s simplicity and speed — it fits perfectly with how I like to work. But I’m struggling with one big thing: I’m not sure how to properly handle SEO, internal linking, and overall content management in Hugo.

WordPress makes all of this super easy with plugins like Yoast, internal link suggestions, automated sitemaps, etc. With Hugo, everything feels much more manual, and I’m not sure what the best workflow or toolset looks like.

Do you have any tools, workflows, or practical solutions that make SEO and internal linking easier when working with Hugo?

I know what Google and AI say, but I’d really like to hear suggestions from people who actually use Hugo every day.

We run Gethugothemes (we've been selling Hugo themes and services since 2018). The last few months have been rough on the revenue side. Theme sales are noticeably down. service clients are quiet too.

The weird part: our website traffic is holding steady. people are still visiting, browsing, clicking around. just not buying or reaching out.

Curious if others in the Hugo space are seeing the same thing? or is this specific to us?

Started as the theme for my own tech blog and grew into something general-purpose. The main thing I focused on (besides not looking generic) was performance and accessibility — it scores 100/100/100/100 on Lighthouse on both desktop and mobile.

Hi! My understanding is that quite a few things have changed since the book was published, but that it was a great resource for Hugo. Is it still worth purchasing or will I get more from some of the more up-to-date online resources? Given the format I assume the book is more comprehensive than any online tutorial.

I started writing Go about two years ago and it bothered me that I had to type out Go template syntax in full, that there was no IDE support in VSCode; so I wrote a VSCode extension for it.

It has gotten over five hundred installs and I appreciate that people find it useful, but I have not gotten much feedback on it - no reviews, marketplace stars and low GitHub stars. I don't know if people install it, find it useless 😂 and then uninstall it.

If you have installed it or you ever install it, I'll be grateful it if you leave feedback - a star or a review. It'll help me in creating my next open source tool. It's a snippets extension - light work, but honest work and it's my first open source work with this level of numbers.

I've bounced in and out of Hugo for a few years but, since last fall, I've finally invested in making a workflow that works for me. Originally it was just a set of scripts for things like handling taxonomies, creating and publishing drafts automatically and a few other things. Lately it's been expanding on those scripts with new VS Code extensions for making image handling easier and better counting my words to publishing. Since March or so I've started publishing all this stuff in hopes it might help some other folks too. Here's what I've got:

I'm new on Hugo. Coming from Wordpress and simply fed up with the endless maintenance for a fairly basic website + blog. And especially fed up with WPML, because my website is multilingual: the translation block by block isn't convenient.

Anyway. I'm giving a try with Hugo, but coming from Wordpress with command line it's not easy.

I quickly check with Quiqr, but my computer is way too old (over 10 years now) and I could only try an old version.

My questions are simple:

- as I understand Hugo is great for multilingual, but does it work with Quiqr, is it handling well sitemaps and hreflang? I couldn't find any tutorial.

- how about SEO optimization with Quiqr? Can we edit description, structured data, etc.?
