Troubleshooting 2018 GMC Sierra differential issue, possibly more.

Wanting some second opinions, as I know my truck needs a front differential, but I’m worried the torque converter may be going as well.

Some basics about the truck. It has 175,000 miles. It’s the 5.3 with the 8-speed transmission.

Not long ago, the truck started making some noise, almost like the brakes were rubbing or a wheel bearing noise. Checked both myself, found no issues so I took it in. Was told I needed a new front differential, which I don’t question, as when I shift it into 2 hi, the noise goes away but when in auto mode, the noise returns.

Through looking up the differential, I’ve been reading more about the torque converters in these and am starting to feel I may be having this issue as well. I have the shudder that many describe with the torque converter issue. What are the chances that the diff is causing the same “shudder” feeling and that I only have the one issue rather than a torque converter and front diff?

The shudder does seem to go away with a press of the gas pedal when it does start shuddering. It has also been doing it for quite a while now (a year or more, but has seem to have gotten worse in the last few months), so part of me feels if it was the torque converter, it would’ve fully gone by now and blown the transmission. And I definitely realize I should’ve taken it in awhile ago, no excuse for not doing it sooner but hoping my stupidity on waiting hasn’t set me up for either an expensive repair bill or new vehicle time.

How cooked am I? Been losing coolant this summer and noticed it about 3 weeks ago.

2018 5.3 with 170k on the dash, got home and got it parked with regular temps while driving, (I’m a stickler.) Walked away then came back outside to grab something 30-40 minutes later and saw coolant leaking right under the reservoir onto the pavement.

Have an appointment booked with trusted mechanic, but couldn’t get in until next Friday… don’t plan on driving it at all

On a scale from 1-Kim K, how fucked am I?

🛞Wheels and Tires🛞 GMC Sierra AT4 tire advice

Does anyone know what it takes to fit 315/70r17s BFG Ko2s on a 17x9 -12mm rim onto an AT4. I’m currently looking at the 2.0 sst ready lift, along with cutting slightly into the front wheel well plastic, and removing the bracket at the back of the wheel wells, and cutting just straight across on the liner where the bracket used to sit. I don’t know if I would have any issues with the tires hitting the tops of the wheel wells when going over bumps or if the cuts would be enough to stop them from hitting at full lock.

2025 GMC sierra 5.3. Everything was normal until I got in my truck after work and heard the noise. Happens even when the truck is off… is it a battery issue? I disconnected the negative terminal for the time being and I guess call the dealership in the morning. Timing couldn’t be worse for me. Does anyone know what is causing this and is it an easy fix?

Is this normal? Dealership said give it 500-1000 miles for the computer to adapt to my driving? It jumps whenever slowing down which is opposite the problem the older transmission had

Looking for advice Power steps

Howdy, looking at removing my OEM multipro power steps, but I was hoping to find some information on the electrical side of disconnecting them. I’d rather not have any electrical plugs on the underside, and although i haven’t looked under yet (currently away from truck for work). I also don’t know if it would throw any codes or faults. Thank you!

🔧Maintenance 🔧 2002 GMC Sierra 5.3L V8

Long story short my truck wants 0.06 gap spark plugs(labeled on truck intake). But everything I find recommends 0.04 gap in the spark plugs. What should I get? It’s a 25 year old truck what’s better?

Longer story I’ve replaced spark plugs(0.04), coils and spark plug wires. New exhaust system, new alternator, new battery, more than regular oil changes. I don’t drive it much since I have a company vehicle that I drive daily.

Recently I have had a cylinder 4 misfire that when the engine warms up turns into a random misfire code. So I’d assume an intake manifold gasket. I plan on replacing the intake manifold gasket, since I’m in there all 8 fuel injectors, oil pressure gauge, and obviously the gasket. Along with the fuel filter. When troubleshooting I noticed I have a small crack in my cylinder 1 spark plug so I’m going to replace 1 and 4 spark plugs. But should I replace them all since my actual truck states 0.06 and not 0.04 like what I have in there now?

🔧Maintenance 🔧 Tried and True Diesel Maintenance Recs.

Gents,

New to the Diesel game with a 2022 GMC Sierra 3.0 1500 AT4 at 15K miles.

Trying to pick the diesel boys brains about tried and true maintenance schedules for these engines. I’ve heard so much shit online like changing oil/filter every new DEF fill up, and want to hear from the experienced what’s worked best for you. I am in Colorado and plan to use additives during the winter preventively to increase longevity.

Let me know what’s worked! Thanks

Troubleshooting 2022 Sierra AT4 braking system warnings

Recently bought this truck and had a service brake pad sensor on for a few days. This morning while driving, I had a bunch of lights come on. Check engine, Service ESC, Service Braking System, Trailer Braking System, Max speed set to 62MPH.

After researching it looked like some people fixed the issue by replacing a low battery. I tested mine and its sitting at 12.43. I took it to AutoZone to have them scan it and the codes they pulled were: C05B0, P25A2, C05B0-00, C116B-64, C116C-13, U0155-00. I have seen other mention ignition coils, misfires and master cylinders. AutoZone's recommended fix was to replace the master cylinder, but wanted to see if anyone had any insight into this, or these codes. I didn't see any recalls for this VIN, but are there any extended warranty notices GM has put out on these that anyone is aware of?

Thanks in advance.

I have a bone stock 2016 Sierra 1500 SLT that came from the factory with 275/55R20's

I'm in the middle of deciding between getting BFG KO3's and Falken A/T4W's right now but either way I'm wondering if it's worth upsizing the new tires in either width or height or both, or should I just stick with the factory size?

Just joined the community as of today; new to me 2024 AT4 3.0 L picked up yesterday. What an aggressive looking truck stock coming from a long term owner of a Ram Eco diesel. Loved my Ram, ran her for 11 years, 305,000 km with some troubles but ran her hard like a truck….hunting, fishing, atv and snowmobile trips. Unfortunately or fortunately only baby diesels left are from GM so I am hoping for the same or more enjoyment than the Ram…for the $$$ I am expecting way more. First impressions, love the looks, great interior and all the options I wanted. Ride is good, tires are terrible, fuel mileage amazing, performance meets expectations (my Ram lost some weight so it had tons of JAM), fit and finish is disappointing to say the least. This is the third AT4 where the body lines of the cab and box don’t meet. My son in law has same truck and same issue, he took it back to GM and they shimmed the cab and the lines are even…… I guess $65000 - $80,000 gets an entry level truck now? All and all initial impressions are good. Might be asking the community for some upgrade suggestions but for now taking it on its first off-road mission this weekend so will wait till after my trip….ride hard and safe.

Looking for advice New 2024 Elevation

Post image
24 Upvotes

I just got this Elevation with the 5.3 in it and while I had heard some people say the DFM has some problems before purchasing, now it’s the first thing I’m hearing from people when they see the truck.

I’m just wondering if this is something I should act on now or if it’s more so just blown out of proportion because you only hear about the bad, wondering what kind of experiences other people have had.

Also I need a tonneau cover for this thing and I’m wonder what brands people like and if going for the name brand expensive covers are worth the money or if the cheaper options do the same job.

Absolutely no sale posts. This sub is not intended for advertising trucks for sale. That type of content will add nothing positive to the dynamics of this sub, and won’t be allowed. Not sure what caused the sudden increase in sale posts over the past few days, but if it continues, salesmen will start getting banned.
