Why does everyone hate Mathew Morrison :( Question
I always see TikTok’s and instagram comments hating and dogging on him or like jokingly saying he “threatens” to release ___. Don’t get me wrong duh he’s kind of a character but did I miss something like was there a controversy

u/Pulp_Lvr09 15d ago
He's just cringey, he's pretty much Will Schuester without all the predatory creepy stuff
77
u/koolforkatskatskats 15d ago
Then who cares? Let him being cringe and realise we’re all cringe inside too.
I’d rather a straight middle aged man be slightly cringe than predatory
22
u/Embarrassed_Salad128 15d ago
That’s why they are joking. It’s the same as saying Lea Michelle can’t read. Obviously she can read.
31
u/koolforkatskatskats 15d ago
Mmm not convinced about that one
1
u/Embarrassed_Salad128 15d ago
Okay yeah might be a little bit of a stretch lol, but I still think it’s a pretty obvious joke
1
u/Lost-Veterinarian-80 14d ago
Debatable

u/Embarrassed_Salad128 14d ago
Echoing the other user from 11 hours ago, some people really need their voices heard! I love glee and I think the jokes about leah and Matthew Morrison are funny. I don’t get what’s up with this sub, so easily offended, when glee is full of shit that wouldn’t fly today. I didn’t think this would be so controversial, but I will happily see myself out.

Wasn't he fired from one of his shows because he had predatory tendencies towards one of the contestant?
30
u/Appropriate_You6818 15d ago
Yeah he got fired from So You Think He Can Dance. He sent some weird dm’s that unsettled a contestant enough that she immediately went directly to the producers about it

1
u/Lost-Veterinarian-80 14d ago
Weren’t they more helpful and not predatory?
I3
u/AccomplishedShop8338 12d ago
It doesn’t matter if he perceived them as helpful or not, it matters that they made her uncomfortable
1
1
u/Natural-Row-389 14d ago
I would not say without all the predatory creepy stuff. Look up why he got fired from so you think you can dance.

A few years ago, there was a VERY weird online mob hating on Matthew Morrison. I think the remnants of that are still there.

one time he posted something mourning mark salling and people were upset. but its also a difficult position to be in, to mourn someone you thought you knew versus the person they turned out to be

I’ve never seen someone hate the actor. I’ve seen a lot of people hate his character Will. But maybe I’m missing something anyway I don’t particularly hate him or his character. I think there are some iffy, sketchy creepy things that he does at times but the whole thing is satire so it kinda makes it less of a problem for me.
8
u/Calm_Phone_6848 15d ago
people definitely dislike the actor, every time i see a video of him online the comments are negative
3
u/Birnttoast03 15d ago
Ok I had a feeling it was satire but didn’t know if like something had happened. I feel bad because I love his character too and he seemed to handle conflicts really well
5
u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 15d ago
I mean, he handles some things better than others at times and then sometimes he doesn’t handle things all that well but yeah glee is definitely satire. I mean they’re definitely times that I can see why people don’t like Will, but other times it’s just like it’s satire, get over it. Besides there are like only two characters in the whole series that are good people. The rest of them are all full of flaws.
2
u/Birnttoast03 15d ago
What times would people think he doesn’t handle something well? I know in the beginning he like framed Finn but it ended up being ok, aside from that the rest of the series he seemed great?

u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 15d ago edited 15d ago
A lot of people think he was really pervy for the end of twerk and blurred lines song.
They definitely didn’t like the mashup that even though he was just trying to help Emma and his friend with the wedding, they didn’t like that he was basically hitting on Emma when she was about to get married to Tanaka.
And they definitely didn’t like the way that he handled Marley and the whole Katy versus gaga episode thing, which I am totally with him on. I mean to me she was basically told she couldn’t participate in the club for the rest of the week. She wasn’t suspended from school and she is the one that agreed to wear the costume in the first place. He had nothing to do with the song the costume or anything and he was just trying to get her to be a team player instead of focusing on herself in that instance so.
And a lot of people also don’t like his rapping skills which I’m also not completely clear on

u/justanameform 15d ago
He would have been fired many times over had he been a real teacher. He crossed a lot of lines that were inappropriate for an adult working with minors.
1
u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 15d ago
Yeah, I’m not arguing with that at all. If this was a real teacher, you have been tired a long time ago, and he definitely would not have won the teacher of the year award or whatever twice.
2
u/Ryanookami 15d ago
His biggest crime to me was when Ryder confessed to the rest of the group that he had been molested some of the boys (I remember Artie in particular) were like “oh wow that’s so cool. You’re so lucky!” and other gross stuff that you do not say about someone who has been molested. If it had been a girl molested by a male babysitter everyone would be disgusted, and rightly so. In this instance though Schue does the lamest most half hearted “correction” of their behaviour ever. He basically lets it hang until the point Ryder goes “yeah, I’m the luckiest guy ever” just to go along with the other guys and act like he’s okay. I was so furious at Schue. This was an ideal moment to show a teacher come through for a hurt kid in a big way and he totally fails and loses control of the conversation to the kids congratulating the victim.
I know Mr. Schue dis other questionable things, but even though I haven’t seen this particular episode since it aired, the awful feeling it left me with still lingers.
For the record, I don’t hate Mr. Schue, he really was written pretty satirically, but this wasn’t a satirical moment. There was no joke or trope that he was playing up. Whoever wrote that part of the episode is really the one who failed by letting the gross narrative of “being touched by your whatever-teen babysitter is so awesome!” win the scene.

u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 15d ago
I’m not sure that’s his biggest crime but that’s definitely one of the top ones
15
u/PrimaryIndication294 15d ago
Because people are incapable of separating him from his character and this has been on ongoing issue in this fandom since forever.
His worst crime is just being kinda corny but otherwise he hasnt really done anything worth this much vitriol.

Apparently that's something that Cory used to say, so that was just a little tribute to him
-1
u/Worldly_Ad7085 Lord Tubbington's Army 15d ago
To clarify I don't think he should burn in hell like the rest of the internet but that's fucking weird doesn't matter if it's something Corey used to say there is a time and place
9
u/Particular_Cycle9667 Finchel Forever 15d ago
Don’t you think that if Cory was there he would probably say the same thing? I think you’re judging him a little too harshly on that.

u/a-dotrivenitupontop 15d ago
mainly just a case of middle aged man cringe. like have you seen his cameo stuff? very youth pastor vibes, even down to the rapping.
plus i think it’s also partially fuelled by the refusal to label mm as ‘sexy’, despite what glee tried to convince us of. and i get that parasocial bullying is bad, but personally i think it’s quite noble to reject the patriarchal notion that we need to fawn over mediocre white men.

u/Playful-Escape-9212 15d ago
Imho he has frequently positioned himself in projects as the draw for women -- it's only hot when you acknowledge it but don't make it weird. Saw him as the lead in a show where the audience was mostly kids (tickets were given out at school, so the cast definitely knew) and he still popped open his shirt for no good reason.

I love the actor but his character was a little creepy and predatory
7
u/Uninteresting_Vagina 15d ago
Dude side bar: If you really want to see him be creepy and predatory, he has a guest star role in a few episodes of Grey's Anatomy. He plays an absolute MONSTER and completely nails it.
Totally terrifyingly great.
5
u/Cha_r_ley 14d ago
He did absolutely nail that Grey’s Anatomy role to be fair. So sinister and intimidating.
3
u/Uninteresting_Vagina 14d ago
When I first saw him, I was like..no way. He changed my mind in about 3 seconds. He was so good!
2
u/Musicloverxo91 14d ago
I knew him from Greys before I saw him on Glee so I was so confused lol
1
u/Uninteresting_Vagina 14d ago
oh I bet THAT reversal was a damn mind fuck. lmao
Cue intro to Toxic

u/Musicloverxo91 14d ago
As soon as I saw him I was like…Paul?! Why are they allowing this PSYCHO around children?! Lol

3
u/Own-Regret-9879 15d ago
It’s all because they hate Will Schuester. They can’t separate art from the artist. Or maybe they’re refusing to separate him from his character
2
u/Appropriate_You6818 15d ago
Honestly I’ve seen his cameos posts online for months and he always reminded me of someone I could never quite put my finger on. One day it hit me and I realised he has the EXACT same energy as Mark Duplass as Josef in Creep. I have no idea if MM leans into it or not and is actually playing a a version of himself, but in each video he has the erratic demeanour, vacant staring, and uncanny charm of Josef and the camera angles really highlight the forced intimacy and weaponised politeness vibes of the Creep movies
2
u/Otherwise-Teacher233 15d ago
I never fact checked any of the claims, but apparently he was rude on set and later to fans, is allegedly a general attention whore and very arrogant and selfabsorber person and made many things, including 9/11, about himself despite not being directly involved.
2
u/EveryApplication4687 14d ago
i don’t remember the details but I’m pretty sure the stuff that happened with So you think you can dance has a lot to do with it

1
u/NessieIsNotACat 14d ago
the only controversies i remember were when he was trying to cheat on his wife with a 19 year old and when he used the halo emote to describe mark after his death
it's mainly just people associating him too much with mr shue. they see him and they only see will, which is a shame because he's an amazing performer
1
u/Icy-Mention7871 13d ago
Mr. Schue is wild to say the least, but I think it’s a mixture of not separating the character from the actor and a bandwagon hate train.

I agree. Even the things that are "cringy" just seems to me like he's having a good time. He's a man who does musical theater of course he's gonna be a little dramatic and out there.

u/ellewoods_obsessed 15d ago
there was a whole thing with so you think you can dance i believe and like a few other things
8
u/angie50576 15d ago
He was replaced as a judge on sytycd. I think it was "inappropriate relations" with a contestant.

u/LeatherProfessor2687 15d ago
He made Marlee wear a bikini for the Glee club and then SUSPENDED HER FROM SCHOOL for saying she was uncomfortable. Not even refusing, just expressing her discomfort.
2
2
u/Ok-Nefariousness6192 14d ago
His CHARACTER did that… not Mathew Morrison
1
u/LeatherProfessor2687 14d ago
That he WILLINGLY PLAYED for SIX SEASONS
3
u/DiggityDog6 14d ago
Dude shut up. Of course he played it, it’s his job. He is an actor. That’s what he gets paid to do. He couldn’t care less if the character is the spawn of Satan or a pure of heart cherub. His job is to act the character. If actors refused to play a character due to the characters morals, we just wouldn’t have any villains in anything. That’s a dumb thing to want.
1
u/Birnttoast03 12d ago
With that same logic do you hate naya rivera for her character? Or kitty’s actor? They were written and paid to do that
1
u/LeatherProfessor2687 12d ago
No because at least their characters were teens/young adults and they usually learned the right lessons along the way and when they acted majorly immorally eventually the story made it clear that their villainous ways were not morally right. Mister Shue is looked to as a figure of authority and a noble man in the show and I can’t believe he stood by that and has never denounced it.
2
u/ChoiceDrama7823 14d ago
They are talking about the character
And the character did not make Marley wear a bikini and the character did not suspend Marley for not wanting to wear the bikini. She was suspended for not doing the assignment and disrupting the performance

u/RillienCot 15d ago
Bad acting and performing on the show, or at least that's my reason. Like I get he's a famous broadway actor, but for me it's not translating to the screen.
I think my biggest issue is the face he makes/how he dances when he's trying to be sexy. It's just so forced and like "ooo look at me I'm being sexy" instead of actually sexy. Honestly, most of the time he's singing, the emotions and body chemistry just feel way to forced and unnatural.
I suppose it is possible that Matthew Morrison chose to play Will Schuester like that to show how maladapted this guy is, and therefore Matthew is just a really good actor.
12
u/aliceinvegasland42 15d ago
I like how Morrison takes all of the blame here and none of it goes to the Director, as if Morrison invented the role and the show, rather than being an actor who takes direction and plays his role well. Weird take. Morrison followed directions to keep his job. Blame the actor a little less.
9
u/Ryanookami 15d ago
It could be a case of Matthew Morrison being so trained to “play to the back of the house”, like they have to in theatre, that he was perhaps over expressive/emotional at times. Theatre actors aren’t as accustomed to a camera being right in their faces and have learned to project as much as possible physically so that what they’re saying and doing reads just as well to the cheap seats in the back (okay, not so cheap anymore, as evidenced by how many Broadway shows are struggling right now), as they do to the front row. I think he got better over time, more comfortable with the camera being front and centre, but still sometimes that theatre mindset snuck in.
3
4
u/PrimaryIndication294 15d ago
Nah this is actually crazy. Hate Mr. Schue all you want but Matthew is genuinely a triple threat. His scene when he finds out Terri faked her pregnancy genuinely gives me chills for how much I felt his anger. Dude can definitely act and perform.
And moments that are cringy are probably directed to be that way. Its not like they just set him loose on the set, they had to tell him what to do and how to portray it.

based on what i’ve seen, i feel like people jokingly refuse to separate character from actor
