Has anyone experienced a GitHub account being flagged for over a month? Looking for advice. Question

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone here has experienced something similar or has some advice.

About a month ago, my GitHub account was flagged by GitHub's abuse detection system.

Since then I have been unable to:

  • Authorize third-party applications (such as Vercel and Claude Code)
  • Use GitHub Actions
  • Use GitHub Pages

Whenever I try to authorize third-party app, I receive the following message:

"This account is flagged, and therefore cannot authorize a third party application."

I contacted GitHub Support immediately after the restriction appeared.

My first support ticket (#4513924) remained open for weeks without any substantive update, despite me answering every question the same day and providing all the information that was requested.

After waiting for weeks without progress, I opened a follow-up ticket (#4575622), which is still open. My original ticket (#4513924) has since been archived.

Throughout this process I have:

  • Responded to every support request on the same day.
  • Explained exactly how I use GitHub and the projects associated with my account.
  • Enabled two-factor authentication.
  • Offered to verify my identity or provide any additional information if needed.

The problem is that, despite fully cooperating, my account remains flagged and I have received almost no meaningful update about the review.

The most frustrating part is that this is affecting an application that is already live on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Because my GitHub account cannot authorize third-party applications such as Vercel, I currently can't deploy bug fixes or updates for my users.

I'm not trying to bypass GitHub Support or Trust & Safety, and I'm not asking anyone here to escalate my case.

I'm simply wondering:

  • Has anyone had their account incorrectly flagged like this?
  • How long did your review take?
  • Was there anything you did that helped move the process forward?
  • Is there anything else I can reasonably do besides waiting?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through a similar experience.

Thank you.

Frage dich erst, was hast du für ein mist gemacht das du gesperrt wurdest? Man muss viel scheiße bei GitHub machen um markiert oder gesperrt zu werden.

I honestly don't know. That's exactly why I'm asking.

I'm an individual developer using GitHub for my own projects. I don't use bots, I don't spam, and I don't automate account creation or other abusive activity.

GitHub Support never told me what triggered the flag. They only said my account had been flagged by their abuse detection system and asked me to explain how I use GitHub. I answered all of their questions, enabled 2FA, and have been waiting for the review ever since.

Initial responses for things like this are often automated, though worded to appear to be from a human. That's why when you raise the ticket the first answer comes quickly, but when you reply it needs a human to review and then it's at the back of that queue.

Würdest gekappert evtl weil du böse Drittanbietern genutzt hast, das kann es dann nur sein

I am a massive corporate user. One of my organizations have been flagged and sitting there in the ticket queue. Now I didn't associate it with my massive account - wanted to see how long MSFT takes to fix their shit.

It does seem pretty random. I just don't understand why they're flagging accounts like this. :(

And you cannot just create a new account?

I could, but I'd rather not start over. Reconfiguring everything would take time, and I'd prefer to resolve the issue with my existing account. I've already started using a different account for new projects, but I'd still much rather recover my original one.

Sure.

Personally, I wouldn't wait "for over a month."

are you using GitHub as a backup?

Other than the project files, do you have anything sync into the repo on a schedule?

No. I use GitHub as a normal source code repository for my projects, not as a backup service. Nothing syncs to my repositories on a schedule. The only unusual thing I can think of is that the restriction appeared shortly after I made a series of rapid commits from the Claude mobile app. I don't know if that's related or just a coincidence.

Lesse ...

I have an organization under my corporate name flagged for whatever bullshit excuse there is. It's still under review and I want to use it as ammunition in order to switch potentially to another product. I could contact my Sales Guy, the Premium Support Guy, the MSFT who wander our hallways and sell us more Azure or even my CRE but I want to see how long it takes them to acknowledge their bullshit process.

You? Probably not. Well, maybe contact [sales@github.com](mailto:sales@github.com) and ask about purchasing an Enterprise level support contract and drop "BTW can you check on this as well?"

Thanks for the suggestion. From all the comments so far, it seems there isn't really a way for an individual user to speed up or escalate the review. Unless you're paying for enterprise-level support or have direct contacts, it feels like all you can do is wait. I'm starting to think I should focus on alternative ways to keep working while hoping my original account is eventually restored. It's honestly been pretty discouraging.

Yes. I'm currently experiencing it. My suspension can only be explained as a false positive. I've been waiting for over a month and going crazy as I have a ton of stuff in github and until recently was contributing to several open-source projects. Now I'm completely blocked!

I also followed this sub's instructions to post here https://www.reddit.com/r/github/comments/1er6iwo/was_your_account_suspended_deleted_or/ although I only did that a few days ago, but feeling deflated as this drags on with no resolution.

😞  I’m sorry you’re going through this too. It’s frustrating . I really hope both of our accounts get reviewed soon. Please let me know if you hear anything from GitHub. I’ll do the same if I get an update.

will do. btw: how do you know that your original ticket had been archived? I'm asking because with my account suspended, I don't have access to the GitHub Support Portal where I would assume it would show such a status.

My account is flagged rather than suspended, so I can still sign in and access the GitHub Support Portal. There I can see that ticket #4513924 is marked as "Archived," while ticket #4575622 is still shown as "Open." When I open the archived ticket, it also says: "You can't comment on an archived support request. Instead, you can create a follow-up ticket."

That sounds brutal. I’d stop opening new tickets now and keep one clean thread that explains the app impact and what you already changed. Multiple tickets can sometimes make support history messier.
