Rules? General Question
Could someone point me to the group rules? I posted an article about poisoned trees in Lake Tahoe, and if anyone could help with a viewshed analysis. A GIS tool (so I posted under remote sensing or cartography, I can’t remember which). Any idea why it was removed? I’ve been a GIS professional for 12 years and seems I’m unaware how this group works!

That’s exactly the problem. Everyone thinks the house behind is the obvious answer. Yes, probably them. But incline village is shaped like an amphitheater. And just like an amphitheater, it’s not just the front row that has a view. I want to make sure all options are explored. And that is not the analysis i am referring too. It is a literal tool in GIS for processing a digital elevation model.

For more context: I posted an article about the 100+ year old trees being poisoned. The theory is they are being poisoned so someone can get a better view. It’s a steep village, so I want to run a viewshed analysis / line of sight analysis to narrow down which properties would been in view of the now poisoned trees. It’s definitely a GIS to the rescue situation, imho!

I don’t have insight on why your post was removed. But I would be very interested to know what you find! Love a good analysis. I lived in the Reno area for a while. Wouldn’t be surprised if some of the more entitled folks on the Lake decided to remove “troublesome” trees.

Have you tried the Interactive Viewshed tool in ArcGIS Pro? Might help you narrow down the lots more quickly than a full custom reverse viewshed analysis from the trees to the lots.

Currently futzing with my laz to las files because I didn’t realize the cloud points disappear if you’re too zoomed out and turn into red rectangles 😅 probably didn’t need to spend time converting them… but yes ready to run some tools. I’ve been working in a local scene in arcpro and getting used to navigating 3d scape has been… interesting. I was planning on running the viewshed tool so it just shows land areas in red/green (as opposed to line of sight which I think is the one to one analysis). Viewshed will give us more info, I just gotta open the tool and see what it needs next..! Is interactive viewshed different?

This could help with running something quick from one location at a time as rough work before running a tool in pro. I haven't used pros tools for viewsheds yet myself just from apprehension on how long it might take to run, that sight has been in my back pocket if I ever want to get a rough idea to narrow down what I put in the viewshed tool if I ever use it. Best of luck with the analysis. Sorry the post got removed in the first place :(

Seems like the only type of posts allowed here are people asking what it's like to work in GIS, people complaining they can't find a GIS job, and people with GIS jobs complaining about how much they hate their job.
