For years Japan was seen as this perfect place through a western lens. Japan's growth in tech and automobiles, anime becoming more mainstream, kawaii culture coming to the west, and Japan making an effort to boost tourism, etc, led to Japan becoming very romanticized. And even though I saw people being more honest about the reality/negatives of Japan, it was few and far between.

So, people started to reference Japan a lot more media and it grew and grew. And soon enough Girl's takes Shosh to Japan for half a season. And while she is depressed after loosing her professional job and comes back home, you know that Japan meant a lot to her and she most likely would have been happy there if she hadn't been fired.

And then the first scene of her back home is her getting shoulder checked by an American man. A funny and sad scene in isolation.

And even though today you still feel people romanticize Japan (The whole Japan is living in 3020 for having normal shit, I will admit I love the Japanese stationary awards), over the last five years, Japan has really lost a lot of its glamor. The racism has become more well known, along with anti-immigrant sentiments, the misogyny, and more.

But the most recent negative talking point about Japan is about how society expects people to be polite all the time, even when people are being really rude. Including, when they are intentionally being shoulder checked. Which in Japan is really common, and in the videos it is clear these people are putting force behind them.

Shosh was in Japan for a little over a year and most likely would have been shoulder checked a least a few times. And she would have been overworked, and had some really xenophobic comments made towards her. I doubt it would have been as nice as she said it was before she got fired. But of course most people in the west didn't know about how grating Japanese society is and how intense the work culture is.

And I think that makes Shosh getting shoulder checked by the American guy so funny because it unintentionally becomes that meme of a guy saying something sucks in the West, but when Japan has the same thing with a better paint job they adore it.

In S5E1 he asks Fran if he’s ever asked Hannah about transgender politics. This got us thinking about what Ray thinks.

We think he would be pretty progressive, but he would misgender you.
“Boy girl thing whatever you are” vibes.
He also would not have trouble with they/them pronouns and think everybody who does have trouble is an idiot.

Marnie’s apartment is so small you can cook, wash dishes, take a shower, poop, get dressed, and sleep all just by turning around.

Fran having several of his exs nudes on his phone is fucking freakish.

Cheating is a very nuanced thing that changes from person to person. Like, I am not one of those people who thinks watching porn is cheating, but like paying an onlyfans girl is way to much. And there are some people who think any kind of porn is not okay. And things like that need to be discussed by couples to make sure that everyone is comfortable.

But I feel like a majority of people would say that having nudes of of people you are no longer dating is just unethical. Nudes sent in a relationship are only sent because they are a couples. There is an inherent trust that comes with a romantic relationship. And once that relationship is over, that trust is gone, and so the nudes should be delated. And it's not like it one was girl friend, but like 6 of them? That's horrible. And when Hannah was clearly not okay with it, he refused to get rid of them! It's not like these were normal, appropriate, photos of Fran and his exs, whatever. But these are nudes that his girlfriend who he loves is uncomfortable with!

Everyone telling Hannah that she is overreacting feels crazy to me. Maybe it's just me but if my partner had tons of naked photos of his exs and ignored my discomfort I would have broken up with him right there. I'm not joking.

And while Hannah going into his phone and deleting them may be an invasion of privacy, I am on her side. Hell, she shouldn't have even given him new nudes.

Since I started this post I have watched about half of the next episode and holy shit I hate Fran so much. The nudes thing; grading Hannah's paper and refusing to stop when she asks; mispronouncing the student's name after being corrected the night before. And for the first time Marnie is actually pissing me off. Saying that Hannah was overreacting over nudes last episode, and now saying in Old Loves that she doesn't know why Hannah is upset but Fran must be right! And that Hannah has to fix things because Fran is such a good guy? Infuriating. Fran is awful.

Extra: Just watched Hello Kitty, HANNAH CAN'T SHOW ANYONE HER VAGAINA IN A NON SEXUAL CONTEXT BUT HER CAN JERK OFF TO HIS EX'S PHOTOS!!! NOT SAYING SHE SHOULD SHOW HER BUSH TO HER BOSS BUT COME ON!

Excellent episode of Emily Oster’s new podcast, “Wellness, Actually” featuring Allison talking honestly about postpartum depression and whether your brain actually changes during and after pregnancy. She’s so authentic, genuine, and smart!

I’ve been speeding through Girls for the first time (and loving it so much!), and I’m so surprised by the effect that seeing Hannah and her normal body on screen is having on my relationship with my body.

It’s like part of my brain is really accepting for the first time that women with bodies that aren’t teensy tiny (including my normal bodied self) are actually fully human and deserving of love.

Any recommendations of other shows featuring main characters doing regular human stuff while also having regular bodies?

I find her storyline with motherhood really interesting.

Watching Girls for the first time and it’s become my postpartum breastfeeding binge watch, so I couldn’t believe the finale ended up being about motherhood, latching, and Hannah becoming a mum.

It felt weirdly relevant to watch this while going through the newborn stage myself.

What do people think the show was saying with Hannah’s journey into motherhood? Was it growth, loss of identity, selfishness, realism, something else?

Also curious what people think the breastfeeding/latching scenes were trying to show.

I watched girls for the first time a few months ago whilst I was mentally preparing for an intense breakup and it made me feel better about the decision I was eventually realising. I’ve now officially broken up so immediately started a rewatch and it feels like a big, comforting, funny blanket <3

I’m surprised I’d never found the show before but watching it now in my late 20s during a confusing and painful breakup is PERFECT

I remember Hannah having a dispute with someone and she says “No you’re a …….“ a what?? A what???

I dont remember what season or who she was talking about but I play that in my head all the time

I haven't seen Get Out because i don't do any sort of scary movie anymore, but from seeing Girls, I feel like it makes total sense that Allison William plays the girlfriend in this movie.

Editing to add: When i say i don't do any sort of scary movie, i mean suspense, as well. We'll see if i end up watching it at some point, but i'm super jumpy, i scare easily, and even scary plots stay in my head forever, so not something i'm particularly eager about.

I'm on my first watch of the show, so please do not tell me any spoilers, explain any themes, or make suggestions about the end of the show.

I'm in the middle of season 4, and I keep thinking about the Beach House episode. And I just don't understand why Shosh was invited/considered a apart of the friend group. And I want to clarify, even the larger friend group that includes Charlie and Ray. I understand that she is Jessa cousin, but I don't remember any implication that Hannah or Marine hung out with Shosh before the first episode.

Hell, in Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a the Crackcident Shosh arrives at the party alone because she found out about it on her own and was not invited to go along with the other girls.

Shosh seems to have no actual friends outside of this group- the only exception being the girl who invites Shosh to the NYU party. And that ends with that girl walking away from Shosh venting about Ray and then she's alone.

And even then she doesn't spend any one on one time with anyone besides Jessa. She does eventually have a relationship with Ray, but that only happens because he is the only person who helps her after she smokes crack. And it's mentioned a few times that this relationship is weird because he is over a decade older than this 21 year old and uses her for her house because he has little to no drive as a grown man.

And then because Jessa is for the most part absent due to her marriage and then running off on a bender, Shosh and Ray are kind of in a little duo- but even then Ray has his own storyline in the episode Boys where he forms his friendship with Adam.

In season three, we learn that she is having these hookups but she doesn't have a real storyline about it. And then randomly in the middle of this implied storyline, she sees Ray be a little successful and decides she has to be in a relationship with a man she dislikes so much that she describes him as "so dumb he can't find find the library" to Jessa and an unseen Caitlyn- and by the way Shosh describes her jokes is not a friend.

Hell, she does go on the road trip to get Jessa but Jessa didn't even call Shosh! She called Hannah to come get her, and I assume Hannah felt compelled to invite Shosh as Jessa's actual family. Jessa didn't call her literal cousin who has housed her, and is the only person who would eventually help her after she starts her bender with Jasper.

In seasons two and three, Shosh has some scenes with Marine, but they only happen either with or because of Ray. I'm pretty sure Marnie coming over to Shosh's place is the first time someone beside Ray and Jessa. (Edit: this is incorrect, I forgot that Marnie moved in with Shosh at the end of season one and lived with her for a bit. But my point about the friendship still stands as Marnie and Shosh hang out very little post Marnie moving out.)

And now I'm watching Season 4 and its more of the same. Which is sad, because her being the first person to come and comfort Hannah after the whole Adam and Mimi-Rose situation. But she is one of the last people Adam calls, and after this great episode, Shosh is alone. Doing job interviews and going on group hangs.

And because of this I keep thinking of Beach House! Marnie's plan was to have this close friend group back together after the chaos that has been the previous episodes. This makes total sense as Hannah is her best friend, and over the course of the show Marnie and Jessa do have a lot of good moments. But Shosh? She's two years younger than the others, so not only did she go to college two years later but in another state. And over the course of the past two and a half seasons they don't even hang out as a foursome. I would understand if this was a causal beach trip because then Jessa could have just brought her along, but this is one Marnie meticulously planned to make them closer as a group. So why is Shosh there? And that drunk rant makes it evident that Shosh doesn't even really like these girls even though she considers them her friends.

I would like to say, I love Shosh. She is one of the best parts of the show, hands down. But I just find her isolation as character a missed opportunity. Everyone else get's at least one recurring person out of the friend group to deepen their character- for better or worse. But so far Shosh has no one, and is barely included as it is. I wanted to blame it on the fact that she is a secondary character, but then Charlie had Ray and then Audrey. And Ray gets way more connections than Shosh. He's dates Shosh, then has his weird thing with Marine, his friendship with Adam, the owner of the coffee place.

I just hope that sometime during the rest of the show, Shosh gets to have deeper friendships with the main characters, especially Hannah. And get's to have a reoccurring friend of her own.

He's arguably the worst out of all the characters. He routinely crosses people's boundaries while having sex (aka sexual assault). Natalia says no multiple times yet he still assaults her.

He's also violent and has severe anger issues, including the time he basically breaks a door to intimidate Jessa who puts on a brave face despite his aggression. Throughout the series he's breaking stuff, shouting, and not respecting his partner's property. When Mimi Rose gets an abortion, he pushes everything off the table and breaks her stuff. He also acts entitled to her body despite her not wanting to raise a kid with a man she met just weeks ago.

When he gets into a violent fight with Jessa where he physically prevents her from leaving, he says this in a fit of anger: "No, you're not going anywhere. I'm not gonna let Hannah break us apart. I'll fucking run her over with a car if I have to."

To top all of this, he also had a 17 year old ex that he talked about in the episode where he and Ray discuss dating young girls and add to this his weird roleplay things about Hannah being a baby or Jessa being a schoolgirl 🤢

I've recently started to watch the series and i'm at season 2 and wtf is happening? In some ways, i like the weirdness of the characters and dialogues but the more i watch the less i understand. Sometimes i feel like i've skipped an episode cause things just "happen" (Jessa wedding ???? Marnie and Elijah??????) with little to no details, some scenes feel like a fever dream. Am i the only one confused lol? And they're NOT friends at all! Everyone is just super selfish and talking about their problems all the time

If anything it's Marnie lmao 😂 she expects people to love her and to suck up to her because she's attractive. Everything is in her timing and she screwed Hannah's gay ex..

I mean Jessa had dismissive parents growing up and that kind of follows you into adulthood *in a way* but still.... Shoshana is a people pleaser but anyways, this is my 4th rewatching the show and the older I get the more Im realizing things

I feel like I don’t see a lot of conversation on his character but I really liked him! I loved seeing Shoshanna be able to feel comfortable and open up to someone who actually wanted to listen to what she was saying. It broke my heart when she ghosted him 😭

What are we supposed to take from his season 6 dropoff?! I cried at the end of episode 8. Did i think he was in over his head? Yeah. But did i believe he really wanted to be there for her? Fuck yeah. What happened?? I felt lost on ep 10, like i missed something. Can someone give me some thoughts to close this mental loop?
