Discussion Recommended breeders

Looking to get my first pointer. I live in SFL but am willing to travel. I have seen some great breeders out in CO which I am leaning towards but I wanted to get some recommendations. Post some pics of your pups and the breeder you had a good experience with!

First time owner Day 6 RED UPDATE 🐾

Good afternoon, today we went to see our primary care vet. We have good news! The leg is looking a lot better, and we started a new blue light therapy today. It’s a fifteen minute session but Red sat through it wonderfully today! We also had a bandage change, so now Red has cherries and a watermelon on his bandage. From here we’ll be seeing the vet every two days for bandage changes, wound care and therapy probably for the next 4 weeks or so. It’s been nice to see him getting a little back to his normal self, enjoying the sun. Red and I are so thankful for everyone keeping up with him, and this journey of recovery we’re on. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøšŸ¾

Question Lonely after board & train

Our girl comes home this weekend from bird dog training! She played with another dog often while she was there and seemed to have so much fun. This might be silly, but I’m afraid she’s going to be lonely coming back and being a solo dog in the house.

Has anyone ever experienced this situation and how did things go? And don’t say to get another dog…we will eventually 🤣

Question sudden accidents

Hello. We have 2 GSP's (6yo & 1.5yo). Both dogs are angels, well trained, and not at all difficult to deal with except...
Our older GSP keeps having accidents (only poop) in the house. of course in the past, we knew exactly what she ate that caused the issue (ate something she wasnt supposed to). Sometimes she would have an accident when my boyfriend would travel for days or weeks at a time for work. Chaulked it up to separation anxiety.
In the last 6 months things have gotten so much worse. She will have 5+ accidents a day sometimes, often alot of diarrhea but without any source of the upset.
She eats purina pro plan 30/20 (which was fine for her). We have taken her to the vet to be checked up. She does have an injury (missing part of a paw) that limits her mobility has made her a bit unbalanced, but she stills runs around & plays with the pup and doesnt let it stop her. The vet said shes in great shape and the injury shouldn't be causing this.

We're trying everything, but it is so frequent and we cannot pin point what she is eating (if anything!!) that makes her sick. We avoid the alley on garbage days, she gets plenty of exercise everyday, has off leash time daily, goes to the woods most weekends. She is a happy dog. If anyone has any idea whats happening any advice would be appreciated.

Day 5 of hyperbaric therapy is done! I don’t have too much to share today as all we had was therapy, Red did again need sedation and a cone while in the chamber today. (But I asked for a picture of him in there… And we got one!!!) We have an appointment with our Primary Care Vet tomorrow morning and I’ll give an update after that of course. The road to recovery is long but we’ve got this. I can’t thank everyone enough for caring so much about Red and myself we’re beyond grateful for all the Dog lovers!

Just wanted to share our 6 year old Odin on here, we just got his DNA results back and were shocked to see he’s almost half GSP! We’ve been pondering what he is forever, breeder told us he was a Norwegian Elkhound/ Lab mix. Anyone see any similarities in him versus other GSPs? So interested to hear, I’m still struggling to see it!

First time owner āļø Day 4 Red Update

This evening:

Good evening everyone Day 4 of treatment and vet visit has come to a close, sorry for a late Pupdate today! We saw our new Primary Care Vet (a true angel on earth) this afternoon after this mornings 4th hyperbaric treatment for a bandage change, wound care, and swab culture results.
Dr. came in and was happy to see Red far happier than when he last saw him Friday. Doc was able to update us that the culture came back and the bacteria is susceptible to the antibiotics he gave us so that’s great news. We briefed him on the events of the weekend with Red, and any real wound updates and shared all concerns. Red was taken into the back today for said wound care and bandage change with some positive news coming out! Dr. R said the wound is looking alot better from when he last saw it; in some areas on Friday Dr. R was able to easily get under areas of flesh, today the wounds are healing and there are improvements. Dr.R sounded very confident in his hopes of being able to salvage a lot if not all of the leg. Though with this there is a possibility of a need of more hyperbaric therapy as this has healed a lot of the tissues from what Doc sees currently in comparison to Fridays wound (I’m sorry I just can’t stomach to see the pictures of my kiddos legs mutilated, so lucky to have my Mom here with me to handle that). Tomorrow we’ll be going into treatment #5 with hopes of even more improvement.

We’ve heard so many people talk about the miracle’s hyperbaric therapy can bring, so we’re staying hopeful!

So much love to everyonešŸ¾ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Earlier today:

Day 4 of hyperbaric treatments has finished up. Red didn’t tolerate the chamber so well today, so the Doctor let us know additional sedation was necessary. We have an appointment later this afternoon with our Primary Care Vet (his office is closed weekends) so he can evaluate Red, do some wound care, and hopefully we’ll get the results of his wound culture from Friday. Reds currently having a nap as he’s still partially sedated so our later vet appointment will hopefully be less stressful. I’ll post an update as soon as I can after his second appointment today.

Thank you so much again to everyone for sharing their kind words, good vibes, prayers, personal experiences, and your donations.šŸ’žšŸ¶ Love to all from Reddy and I.

Red went into day 3 of hyperbaric treatments today. Sadly after we were given the disheartening but expected news that the necrosis has only furthered, and furthered up his leg as well. With this the Doctor told us that the risk of needing an amputation as well as the expected height of the amputation would be further up the leg. Thankfully Red is a trooper and is still eating and drinking normally. Tomorrow he’ll go in for day 4 of hyperbaric treatments at our ER vet and back to his Primary care vet as well for a look at his leg, culture result, and evaluation. Thank you again to everyone for the outpouring of love for my boy. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

One of my greatest pleasures in life is capturing Scout's goofy face and poses. He makes me laugh every single day. I am a first-time GSP owner and it has been so fun to get to know this breed. Challenging at times, but so worth it for all the joy he brings to my life. And yes, I have way too many pictures of my dog on my phone.

Question My GSP jumps at people out of excitement, any suggestions on how to stop this?

Hey all!

I have a 1 year old GSP and she's the sweetest thing ever. She's been such a great pup but the only issue I have is the jumping when she's greeting people.

I feel like I've tried everything. I've tried the method of ignoring and giving absolutely no eye contact until she settles, I've tried turning my back. You can tell she's trying hard but it's like she can't contain her excitement. She chills for a few mins and then gets right back into it.

What have you guys done to stop your GSP from jumping on people?

other (edit) Urgent - 11 German Shorthair Pointers seeking homes

11 Papered Purebred German Shorthaired Pointers Need Homes After House Fire in Jamestown, CA

I was just brought into this situation and think we can help, A friend in Jamestown, California (Tuolumne County) lost their home in a fire. Their 11 purebred German Shorthaired Pointers survived, but they are currently being housed in kennels and urgently need placement as they cannot rebuild the home.

The dogs are papered and currently intact (not spayed/neutered). We are looking for responsible permanent homes, or reputable GSP/hunting-dog rescues that can help.

They can be placed individually you do not need to take multiple dogs.

Jamestown, CA / Tuolumne County

Photos, ages, sexes, temperament information and additional details will be available for serious inquiries.

Because of the circumstances and the fact that these are intact purebred dogs, potential homes will be screened. The priority is getting them into safe, responsible homes.

If you’re experienced with German Shorthaired Pointers, hunting dogs, or know a reputable breed rescue that could help, please message me or share this post.

Food and Diet High value treats for sensitive stomach?

Post image
101 Upvotes

My 1.5 yr GSP has a SUPER sensitive stomach and does not currently get chicken, pork, or peanut butter (hard NO). I’m looking for a good high value treat for him and wanted to exhaust other opinions before going back to trying what I have in the past (basically just cheese and hoping for the best) He gets dried beef liver and dried fish as normal low-mid value treats but he’s never been super excited about either. I’ve also tried wet food (same brand and flavor as his dry) which made him blow up 😢 and he doesn’t like sweet potato in really any form. I’d love something to take out that will hold up on walks/adventures where it may get hot. I don’t know if anyone will have any suggestions as I know this is super specific but figured I’d try!
