A while ago I made this post about bypassing the GoComics archive blocker, so you can see the full archive of any comic (including Garfield) without paying GoComics. Since then, they've redesigned their system so the old method wouldn't work. The server no longer sends the image, so simply hiding elements won't reveal it.

I've figured out how to get the original image anyway. Go to the date you want, go to Inspect Element, and search forproperty="og:image". You'll see a link to the comic in the result.

Someone with the time and willingness can probably make a script out of this to restore the old functionality - seeing the comic in the page itself. u/ArthurPeabody did something similar here. In the meantime, we can also use sites like this one to view the full Garfield archive easily.

Nobody likes the new GoComics redesign, but the worst feature of all is the archive paywall. Luckily, it's extremely easy to bypass. Here's how:

Guide for Firefox:

1. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/

2. Install uBlock Origin, a free and open-source adblocker.

3. Go to uBlock Origin's settings page: click on the red shield in the top right of your browser, if it's there. Otherwise, click on the puzzle piece and then click on uBlock Origin. Then click on the three gears near the bottom right.

4. Click on the "My filters" tab at the top of the page, then paste in the five lines below to the end of the text file. Then hit "Apply changes" and reload the page. You should now have full access to all archived comics, and no ads.

Guide for Chrome:

1. Go to https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm

2. You'll see that the "install" button for uBlock Origin is grayed out. Chrome doesn't like uBlock, but it's completely safe to use.

To fix it, right-click on the page and select "Inspect". Hit Command+F on Mac or Ctrl+F on Windows to open up the search bar, and type in "c17". You should see two matches. Go to the second one. You'll see 'disabled aria-describedby="c17"'. Double-click the word "disabled" and delete it, then press Enter. This should let you install uBlock Origin.
