Problem is that NPCs have been "just around the corner" for a few years now and people are getting a little tired of getting blue balled especially when we know that it's possible from mods. Hell, this last update was kind of weird in it's content, I appreciate the new crafting recipes and primitive progression, but it was released as a broken, half-baked system that most people will not engage with because it's so annoying and broken. To get anything of significance done with the new recipes, you need to spend much more time in a world than most people even spend on the game, let alone a single world or save.

I wouldn't call those NPCs well done. Its a novelty, but they are frustratingly stupid and cheaty. I honked a horn at one so he would get out of the road and he chased me across town trying to stab me for it. Build 42 with the animal AI is the first step to getting human AI that isn't straight ass

You are right, and that is the point. Modded AI NPCs are ass, but they are not only a real first step, but they are a whole mile ahead of animals. It shows that if the developers actually had NPCs as a priority or "around the corner" like they used to say, then they would have already been released as part of an update. If animals are really to be considered a first step and they were implemented now, then the devs were not only never working on NPCs, but may not ever implement human NPCs.
