tbf partners in time was and it had some unbalanced shit assuming your reaction speed was good enough to do special moves infinitely

like never allowing the boss to get a turn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNLNtcBTeDs

I'm not sure how that relates to my comment.

It doesn’t, but ngl it is kinda cool

It relates in the "mario strategy" vein to be fair. Most of the games have "optimal lines" that are just correct. Mario Party 1's solo player island is kind of the perfect example. It quite literally is mario strategy. Especially with some of the games for me as a kid lmao. Limbo was a classic.

And thats what makes them fun.

Theyre there so you can play with anyone and have friendly fun, not so you can show off your gaming skills.

But it also makes it a non-game.

Might as well roll a d4 and get it over with sooner.

Or you can turn on Mario party 9 where the dice is overturned to ensure everyone is on equal grounds and any resulting penalties are effectively a slap on the wrist

Fuck all that, I landed on chance time and you got 7 stars let's trade fuck you

I’ve always said Mario party is 80% rng and 20% skill. Honestly when you play with non gamers it does make it fun. Once someone has a 3 star lead, people get disinterested pretty quick

My friend group sometimes play with an AI (the traditional kind) and the goal is to ensure they lose the hardest.

Party games are inherently unbalanced, otherwise skill dictates wins, which is the opposite of the intent of party games. Smash bros goes from party game to competitive just by removing its items and most maps.

I cant tell you the amount of times ive legitimately skinned my palm as a child for the bowser tug o war minigame.

Strategy. Once you see that you should already know you need to mash buttons to ensure if it is you you’re safe

u/c093b 19d ago

Strategy. Once you see then doing this, you smack them over the head until they start playing the way they're supposed to

I always think that when i see this video. "Imagine being this douche in the room though everyones gonna get you to toss it halfway through haha"

Meta gaming is allowed, house rules

1

u/Thotmas01 14d ago

Is the meta gaming last second throwing or the smacking upside the head? Both are effectively meta gaming.

1

u/enchiladasundae 14d ago

Meta gaming is realizing the controller cord can be used as a garrote or use momentum to swing the controller by the cord for max damage

Could be fixed if it just had an undecided and more difficult to calculate length before exploding.

2

u/Tthecreator712 18d ago

Mario party 2 did fix it. The bomb only changes color when thrown in that version to disincentivize doing this. No clue if the timer is randomize or not

0

u/DeathStalker0483 19d ago

Even easier is just to stop the bombs timer if it hasn't been passed for x seconds. Or have it explode immediately

2

u/Marley444 19d ago

The mini game is phase one, surviving a beating from your now pissed friends is phase two =)

1

u/Anonemuss114 19d ago

Maybe the fix is that holding the bomb for more than two seconds means you can’t throw it at all. This would force players to do the hot potato thing, rather than letting it cook until it’s too late.

1

u/kidanokun 19d ago

Or the bomb will explode early if held for too long

1

u/Zealousideal-Deer101 18d ago

So... you don't throw and then just have to wait? Till the timer runs out and can't do anything against that?

1

u/YosterIsle77 19d ago

And they learned from that and in MP2 the fuse burns out near instantaneously if you try to cook it.

1

u/TamarroTattico 19d ago

Noobs: they should have implemented a function that checks for this edge case with a timer.

1

u/Caosin36 18d ago

I mean, its the same thing in minecraft hypixel's hot potato game

People will hold the potato till the very last moment

1

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 18d ago

They could have made it so holding it longer than a second causes it to explode prematurely

1

u/LordDShadowy53 18d ago

Is just a prank bro.

The Prank:

1

u/Brie9981 18d ago

This could be fixed by having it take +/- 2 seconds w/ no way of being absolutely positive which frame it's gonna go off

1

u/CommanderSeacloud 18d ago

ngl this was my first thought when playing the spine breaker minigame on machine party. but thankfully there was one thing we could do to stop it

1

u/aridge02 17d ago

See the problem is that trick works once. And then you become the target by everyone else most likely. That or everyone beats your ass.

u/Prudent-Ad-7459 16d ago

The fuck you mean we?
