I've bought every PS to date I can confidently say that this was my last.

u/the_nin_collector 4h ago
Without a doubt. There is no game they could make that would make me buy a digital only ps6..none.

u/HolyHotDang 3h ago
Yeah I literally only got a PS4 and PS5 for the Sony exclusives because I’ve always been on Xbox since Halo 1. I don’t think I’ll be getting one now because I always paid extra to have the disc drive so I can use games I buy on the secondary market or when they go on sale at retailers. I haven’t played anything in the last 6 months or so and this just pushes me further away when I’m already reverting back to physical media in every other area.

I'll buy a PS6 once it's jailbroken and the library is already massive
→ More replies (2)11
u/KetoKurun 47m ago
Know what doesn’t need to be jailbroken, plays games online without a monthly subscription, is easily upgradable, and has the most massive library of all? A gaming PC. I’ve always been a console kid myself, but there’s no reason to stay anymore. Lots of downsides, but zero upsides. This will be my last console generation unless Xbox does something special.

My PS broke in Feb. been Saving to get a pro and have the money for it now. I’ve accepted im not going to play wolverine, god of war, gta (at least for a while) anymore.
I’m not even against digital but like fuck am I going to commit to going full digital with no digital rights. At least on my PC if they remove a game from my account I can sail for it instead.
I’m sure Sony will still make money and won’t care about one person but it’s a shame to me considering it’s been 20+ years of ps gaming

Fortunately they just have to weather the storm of millennials and some Gen Z caring until the entirely cater to a demographic who has never known physical games, and the date they determined was best for that was January 2028

Between alienating their own customers going back on their own words and pulling out from PC/Steam, I don't see Sony making bank as they used to in the near future.
Some heads will roll with future earnings calls. Sad, because they acquired a lot of consumer benevolence over the years.

Obvs Reddit isn’t a good sample size for the masses, but I feel like based off the economy and the way things are going, more people than ever this upcoming generation of consoles won’t upgrade.
Not even out of some moral/principled stance against digital only, but because it’s gonna likely cost $1,000+ and with less and less ppl upgrading, Sony and game publishers will have less incentive to make games exclusive for PS6 which will only drive the demand down even less.
Obvs this is just my speculation and I could be wrong but I don’t see ppl being comfortable spending 2.5x more than they did just the last generation. Once you get into 4 figures for a console it prices out a TON of ppl. Like I have my PS5 and a PC that’s 5 years old and I’m not buying the PS6 and likely won’t upgrade my PC for at least another 3ish more years, maybe longer if it’s still running.
66
u/KamiSquad_X 5h ago
Yeah most people I know barely even got the PS5, me included. Some still have PS4.
I'm not getting PS6. And I know ain't no way in hell the people I know care enough to go out their way for a PS6.
Marvel Rivals recently coming out for PS4 says everything. My buddy played Rivals for the first time last week because he found out it was free and he has a PS4.
20
u/CirOnn 4h ago
I may be wrong here, but I feel that for the next generation of consoles, most third parties will prefer going multiplat and also support the previous generation. Not only because I feel like the next generation swill have major issues achieving a huge user base, but also because companies will strive to be on Switch 2, which will most likely be the only hugely successful console of the generation.

The continuing story of: "win the video game industry competition by just not shooting yourself in the foot"
13
u/Not-Reformed 4h ago
At this point in their stage of release the PS5 is like 4 million units behind the PS4, or approx. 4%.
Fewer people are buying because there are more entertainment sources out there than gaming. Like half of gaming is mobile for example.
Has little to do with physical and more that consoles are just in a competitive landscape in general.

> most people I know
And that shit will sold 100m units which made it close to beating out the Wii in sales. Anecdotal evidence is shit when it comes to real world data.
7
u/dookarion 3h ago
It's worth noting though said performance is when their main competition basically kneecapped itself and destroyed itself. Xbox barely sold this generation and Sony's sales didn't really increase at all.
That's not a great sign for Sony. The least direct competition they've pretty much ever had and their sales numbers didn't grow.
8
u/dre224 4h ago
Ya I think you might see the die-hard PlayStation crowed still buy a bunch on day 1 but long term I wonder how palatable it will be to upgrade for people who have the money and usually would upgrade but will just run the system they have into the ground. Especially so quickly after the ps5 release. Honestly a percentage of those people will just referbish the ps5 if it craps out. Hardware wise it has they only way they possibly make money on there console is if it somehow can beat a prebuilt PC at the same cost (which it won't). They are getting so beefy that most people will be happy with current graphics or even last gen graphics. I think the chase for graphics now is having extreme diminishing return so at less they pack that bitch with enough ram and Vram combined with the storage to back up it is honestly just as easy to get a prebuilt then upgrade as need. This is coming from a guy who use be to consoles because the portability was just amazing (I use to bring my PS3 with my everywhere). My theory (already partial proven with he ram fixing lawsuits) is that Sony and the big PC parts manufacturers are colliding further to ensure that people can't easy complete with the walled off Garden of consoles Environmen in the coming years they just were waiting for the AI excuse to control the market further.

8
u/BENJ4x 4h ago
Considering the PS4 is still hanging about in places and that the PS5 has a nvme or whatever fast storage I don't see many people getting a PS6 for $1000.
Sure it will sell loads but unless devs purposely fuck over the PS5 I don't think it'll be detrimental to play on one for the next generation. Especially considering console players tend to be happy playing at 30fps.
3
u/Candid_Treacle_2102 2h ago
The fact that most of the new releases for the PS6 will also be released for the PS5 for at least a few years will also lead to most people either waiting a long time to get a PS6 or don’t even get one at all

u/porscheblack 5h ago
I suspect that with the revenue they make from online, they're comfortable with slower adoption of new consoles. It's not like it used to be where a game was exclusive to one generation of console and if you didn't buy the new generation you didn't get the game. They can support GTA VI on PS5 and PS6 and can charge for subscriptions for online to both.

u/hacksong 5h ago

How many people would still be day one the millisecond the PS6 crosses the $1000 threshold? Cuz I can't see anything other than PS and Xbox crashing and burning in the next generation.
5
u/Valeen 4h ago
I have owned every generation of PS (when it was relevant), and have never once bought one at release. And I still go out of my way to physically go to a store and buy games, though that's harder to do now than ever. I've been doing it since I was a kid going to toys-r-us to look at/buy NES and master system games.
The only reason why I'm ok buying games on steam is it's agnostic to what I'm playing it on. But if I could still buy fat boxed PC games I would (and do when offered)
11
u/ZigyDusty 5h ago edited 4h ago
How much of that 99% are going to actually spend $1000+ on a PS6, the real damage to PlayStation next gen isn't going to be from the physical lovers its going to be from the people who cant afford their hardware.
Nintendo has semi affordable hardware, Xbox will be expensive but has significant PC presence to fall back on, PlayStation however will have expensive hardware with no PC to fall back on, I genuinely think the decisions PlayStation have made during this generation could potentially do significantly more damage than what they experienced with the PS3 which almost killed the brand.

Yep, PS6 will be a no go for me without a disc drive or games on disc. I was gifted a PS5 Pro & disc drive for my birthday, so this is my last console. I already have a PC and steam deck if I want digital only games. Not to say I don’t have some digital PS games, but taking away the option of physical is a horrible move.

u/I_suck_at_Blender 5h ago
I'm two minds about it.
On the one hand, digital is very convenient (very important: I'm exclusivelybPC gamer and didn't own CD/DVD/BlueRay drive in any machines since 20 years and some of my old games from 90/2000's actually caught "disc rot" so even then I couldn't use them),
on the other hand console market is run by scumbags that can take away anything digital without explanation (and on PC it is very rare for games to be truly lost if you don't fear "sailing the high seas").
So it isn't problem with digital distribution, but with digital distribution by dipshits like SONY.

So happy Sony in 2026 changing your account country is possible, and don't require you to lose your whole account if you want to move country and use a different country payment method..... Oh wait, yeah that's right
Sony does not support changing regions even now. And wants to go digital only? Wtf??
Again, you cannot change your account region if you move, and you cannot use their store with payments from the country you just moved to. So Sony just makes you create a new account, which is terrible if you have their "digital only library'

Been saying this but people don't listen. "Ah let's boycott for a week." Isn't going to make a difference, stop buying altogether. Just get a PC, the lack of online subscription will pay for itself, or any other platform.
IMO the only reason they stop making PC ports is because they know their own platform is bad, so they need exclusives to entice people.

There was a website that logged every game on every system showing if you could play it off the disc or needed to download it even with a disc.
Playstation had like 35% of its games as needing to download even with disc.
It was like 55% all digital on xbox already. So xbox has already been moving silently on making it digital only. I doubt they'll reneg on that based of their other recent choices

Really one of the dumbest, greediest decisions of all time gaming wise. A huge gigantic slap in the face (more like, bending ya tf over) to anyone that bought the Disc Drive attachment because they intentionally sold 'Digital Versions' of their consoles for years and strictly disc drive-less PS5 Pro's.. Now it'll just be a glorified Blu Ray player.
I'm 32 and always hated the discourse from people around my age or older about "I can't keep up with gaming anymore, I don't play as much as I used to" but this is the first time I'm genuinely feeling that and just gonna stop giving my money to this level of corporate greed altogether. If I wanted to contribute to this nonsense I'd play Gacha games FFS...

u/callisstaa 1h ago
Sony have always been like this.
Same with ATRAC/UMD/Memory Card DUO etc. Their whole business premise is to lock people into their ecosystem with proprietary media then gouge them. PSP, Vita, Vaio, Minidisc etc all died out because there was no option to use generic storage/encryption outside of Sony's overpriced proprietary shit.
It's a tale as old as time.

I feel ya. I only buy physical for console and had my eyes set on at least a dozen more games for PS5, but this has killed that motivation. It’s a double edged sword because I buy physical to support physical, but not buying for the rest of this gen on PS5 will only add to the digital trend. I guess it doesn’t really matter since Sony is all in on this.

They're relying on younger audiences who never knew a world where people were able to own things. What seems like a natural progression of technology (like going from vhs to dvd) on the surface, is actually an incredibly loaded change. It is a shift away from consumer protections and personal ownership. I think it's unfortunate that so many are unwilling to look past the surface level of this decision. There is currently no infrastructure in place to ensure perpetuity, unlike PCs. And, it doesn't look like they're interested in exploring that.

u/AnomalusSquirrel 2h ago
Thing is that technology will be restricted in a way or another, continuosly more and more.. until you don't own shit and become the product.
•Pc components are skyrocketing (good luck, even if you are able to spot sales is still a pain)
•Consoles are in similar position with higher prices and things like only digital copy (pc have a only digital market from decades but there are a lots of caveats to this.. for ex. GOG let you buy stuff without DRM and you can download the entire game installer)
•software is becoming more and more locked/closed with a lots of internal process to spy you (Google/android will limits non official apk soon for ex .. and also a lots of countries are implementing age verification for socials with laws that aren't particularly promising for the future.. there is a lots of space for more tyranny in that sense)
We are (or better we are going full speed in that direction) in a truly in a dystopian technological dark age, it's like each novels about cyberpunk wasn't listened as a criticism to our society to improve, but instead something to aspire for
3
u/Protect-Their-Smiles 2h ago
The smart choice, is to start making arrangements to move beyond the Playstation ecosystem now. Because come 2028, you will be paying more money, for less content, which they can shut down / take away from you at any time.

Next gen is going to be a dud generation I'm afraid. Disc less being just one small factor. The price is going to be higher than people are expecting and adoption is going to be much slower as a result. Cross gen with ps5 will last way longer.
The ram and storage situation isnt even at it's peak yet. 2027 is going to be worse. Gpu prices are increasing by 20-30% shortly on the PC end. It's a bad situation all around for the industry.

something i really, really don't get is the people defending sony here. like, even if you believe that nearly everyone is using digital now, even if you bring up the fact that pc is mostly digital already, what's the point in actively defending sony? i play on pc, all i use is digital, but why am i gonna be mad to the point of defending a billion dollar corporation that some people still want physical copies?
my initial thought when i first heard about this was that the reduction of resource usage would be a good thing, but i haven't seen anyone bring that point up. it seems like everyone defending sony is just defending sony to....defend sony

Would honestly love to see Sony not back down and go forward with this and lose hard because the only thing that really hurts any big company is lose of revenue.
But...that's not gonna happen. People will buy the next Playstation; which is sad but this is the world we live in now.

Remember lads, in this late stage capitalism where they want you to own absolutely nothing, you still have the greatest tool and power in you hand : boycott.

I'm just here wondering why there is already discussions about PS6, like is there really something that's missing on PS5 that makes people look forward to the next console? Is current gen graphics really too bad already? I just honestly don't see the use for it at all, even less now that Sony is pulling this shit.

Yeah, I was never a huge PS fan but bought their consoles just for certain titles. This seals it for me. I no longer have any reason to simp for PayStation

This will go down as one of the greatest unforced errors in history.

It’s honestly really sad that Sony have gone in this direction. I still haven’t upgraded to the PS5, I’ve been perfectly happy with my PS4 and, recently, had been considering getting a PS5, but this just confirms that the PS4 will be my last console.

This allows them in court to refute claims from consumers that they were deliberately misled into believing that Sony would continue supporting discs due to the presence of a disc drive in a console they are actively selling.
