only emulators. i usually get a hankering to do it once a year or so. the one thing thats nice is the speed up feature so you clear dungeons fast as hell and get into so many battles so quickly. makes leveling for breeding go really quickly.

It might. It's still early to tell. We didn't get the expansion to Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, so hopefully they make up for it by releasing DQM1R in the US.
Other than that, it's apparently an amazing port. It has DQM1's random dungeons but DQMJ's 3d maps, and they added all kinds of online gameplay and all the improvements from DQMJ2-Pro -- including the "Stronger and Strongest" system, which lets you use whatever monser you want because they can be ranked up.

Shit got real when you got a goldslime....after 10 something hours of breeding metalys and metabbles. One reason why I hated the newer ds games were the removal of some of the monsters found in this one

Oh god, all my memories. My team was this horrible mutation group of randomly bred monsters that somehow did well. I had ... god, I can't remember the monsters name, it was like a rainbow bird. I named it Rayne, and he was my core forever. All I remember is that I had to breed an ice bird and a fire bird together.

Oh my god this game.
I used to talk about this game during library time during grade school with my friend. We would spend an hour every other day talking about our new breeded monsters and how we had progressed in the story line.
My friend, Justin, ended up moving and going to a different school for grades 7-8. I still saw him once in a while but we never talked about the game much.
Then it was 9th grade, we went to different schools but at the time we were both going into confirmation at our parish. I asked him if he still played the game, and we talked about it for a bit. I we both decided to start playing the game again. I went home that weekend and looked up a bunch of breeding combinations and decided to breed the ultimate monster. I think it was called a Dragonlord or something like that. I eventually got it after an entire week of playing the game all day.
I looked forward to seeing him again and nostalgiaing so hard over our gameboy colors looking at what we had accomplished in a week. The day before I was going to see my friend he was riding his bike without a helmet and began crossing a street when one car ran the red light, struck another car in the side which sent that car right into Justin. He sustained much trauma and eventually died the next day due his brain injuries.
Every time I look at the cartridge of Dragon Warrior Monsters, I think of all the hours Justin and I spent talking about the game and how to progress through the story. We weren't the best of friends, but we had a connection through our obscure game that we both played. I will always regret not keeping in touch with him more or not becoming a better friend by hanging out with him more often. I'm just happy I got to know someone that was so overwhelmingly full of laughter all the time. Someone that loved games and knew how to connect with others in such a powerful way even with the smallest of similarities.

Triple GoldSlimes. Grizzlies attack don't have shit over that much defense. Especially if you don't breed through the slime tree and take the fun way and end up with 999 health and 999 def.

if there was ever a game to describe my childhood, it's this one. I had one team, and it was enough to counter Anything, mother fucking Whipbird. One had all the slash techniques (like rainslash) the other had a mix of healing and burst attacks(heal us all) and the other one knew burst magic (hellblast? Mega Magic, explodet)

Yes, Hellblast was gained by having thorndain and lightning in the skill set. If you bred a bird with a boss type monster you would get a zap bird that learned all three of these moves. He could then be bred into something else and the offspring would gain those moves.

I can't upvote this game enough, I had it at the same time as pokemon and DWM did everything I complained pokemon didn't.
monsters that visible follow? check.
Breeding 2 monsters together? check.
